Congrats to your parents (who don't look Iowan at all). Mine just had their 40th. How I have no idea.
Actually my folks were both born and raised just north of Minneapolis. Even after living here since 1959, Mom FINALLY is OK with it. I remember growing up listening to "GOD, I HATE IT HERE!!!!....I WANNA TO GO BACK TO MINNEAAAAAAPOLIS!!!!"

...BTW, I'm planning on having a lengthy conversation with an ottoman.....stay tuned to youtube.

Urgh! Sooo close! I only missed three early ones - Keosauqua, Farmington (never heard of it) and McGregor. I almost typed in McGregor but thought, nah.

Farmington is a tiny town in Van Buren County, the same rural SE county as Keosauqua. In 1850, that was pretty much the only populated bit of Iowa, aside from the Mississippi River towns. I'm from SE Iowa so I know a bit about those tiny towns, but McGregor caught me off guard when I made the list.

I was also impressed by how long Ottumwa hangs on to a top ten spot (until 1960!).

I tried to do something that would make you smile but you just automatically go back to feeling sad and lonely.

Draw it by hand. Draw your face as it appears right now.

I had to look it up in the atlas. Couldn't believe it still has only 700 or so residents.
I know Davenport took a dive in population, (understandable) I was surprised to see Des Moines also lost a chunk of population. I was also surprised that Cedar Rapids didn't show up on the list until way later.
