I always have thought that Chinatown was part of DT. However, I think LA needs to accept that the freeways will not be capped for a long time.......economic demand isn't there for the land.......except for maybe creating parkland. However, there is no reason why they can't enhance one of the major streets that traverses the freeway.....bldg buildings on either side of the bridge so that there is a continuous flow of retail from one side to the other. That might encourage pedestrian traffic from DT to Union Station and Chinatown and reduce the feeling that DT is physically segmented. I just don't know how that would work from an earthquake perspective.

Driving home from work on the 110 on Friday, the core of the Courtyard Marriott was visible for the first time. Good to be able to see it.

And work on the Spring Street park is underway, finally. Snapped this pic with my phone earlier today.

LA River to the North, East LA Freeway interchange to the East, 10 freeway to the South and 110 freeway to the West.

101 goes through downtown LA.

I hate defining downtown by freeways, although I can't say that I disagree. Except that I normally hear LA river to the east and 101 to the north.

I think the digital "6,5,2" defintion is pretty good (110, 101, 10) but clearly DT is expanding beyond that.

I would use "downtown" for any area adjacent to the core DT that has density, streetlife and some highrise. So I would go south to Expo Park, west for 1/4 mile at least and north to Elysian Park. Conversely, I would have removed a lot east of Alameda since it was mostly industrial and warehousing, but I'll put it in now because it's going toward DT style density and streetlife.

Alameda Sq. is an example of what I'm talking about: it seems to be converting from abandoned industrial to office, designer and skilled artisan, all of which are typical of modern downtowns.

It's under construction. I didn't take any photos, but I drove by there last week and it's a large hole with some of the construction concrete just barely reaching street level.

I walked around the Civic Center and past the Hall Of Justice and I noticed that they are digging a pretty large hole on the north side of the property. Anyone know what that's for?

And an off topic observation: I was watching Ghost Adventures last night and they were at the Pico House. They told the history of the place and said that back in the late 1800's, there was some sort of riot between the Chinese and white people which resulted in 18 people dying. Anyway, the Pico House is haunted. Ghost Adventures makes it clear that whenever a place is haunted, you can feel some sort of bad vibes.

So I walk around the front (or at least the side with the plaza) and I got this horrible feeling of dread. Like I felt that something bad happened in front of that place. I quickly walked away from it because I felt like if I didn't leave, something bad was going to happen. Not a nice feeling.

Ya know, if you somehow capped the 110 from 7th to 3rd, that would help truly make City West a part of Downtown.

I know they are digging out an underground parking garage. Perhaps that is what the hole is for?

Yeah, I prefer this one.
There often are delays within delays within delays in new projs going forward in the hood cuz of lack of $$, cuz a new devlpt won't pencil out, cuz the owner has gone into chapter 11. but that proposal may be slowed down....or has been slowed down....cuz the local city council member is reported as being unhappy about any new devlpt on the site on Sping st blocking access to old movie theaters facing broadway. Preserving old time, historic movie theaters in many instances is a good cause, but when it comes to that agenda & the need to finally fill in big gaps throughout the hood, I say any further delay is ridiculous &

That has come up before. Expanded pedestrian bridges were also suggested a couple of years ago. If housing continues to expand in City West, these might make sense.

Retail for Spring Street

‘Eclectic’ Home Goods Shop to Open on Spring Street

by Ryan Vaillancourt

Quote:
Andrew Meieran, proprietor of the Edison and the developer behind the ongoing renovation of Clifton’s Cafeteria, plans to open a retail shop at Seventh and Spring streets dealing in eclectic home furnishings and accessories.

Kinetescape will occupy the corner space in the Bartlett Building, a condo property where Meieran owns the commercial slots. The shop will sell furniture, lighting and “all things unique,” Meieran said, from 1920 amusement park games and machines to Art Deco lighting fixtures and specialty paper products.

Speaking of nice boutique hotels, we stayed at the O Hotel (http://www.ohotelgroup.com/) last week. It was recommended by someone on this forum and I would highly recommend it myself for anyone visiting downtown. It was a great place and a convenient location by the 7th Street/Metro Center station.
