I think the digital "6,5,2" defintion is pretty good (110, 101, 10) but clearly DT is expanding beyond that.
I would use "downtown" for any area adjacent to the core DT that has density, streetlife and some highrise. So I would go south to Expo Park, west for 1/4 mile at least and north to Elysian Park. Conversely, I would have removed a lot east of Alameda since it was mostly industrial and warehousing, but I'll put it in now because it's going toward DT style density and streetlife.
Alameda Sq. is an example of what I'm talking about
: it seems to be converting from abandoned industrial to office, designer and skilled artisan, all of which are typical of modern downtowns.
