Just a note:

When linking the source of a photo, you have to link to the actual web page it came from, not just paste the URL of the photo below the photo.

Shovels are in the ground to develop an upscale spa in south Winnipeg.

Developers have started construction on Nordik Spa-Nature on the Crescent Drive golf course. The project was formally announced last October and will be completed by spring 2013.

The Quebec-based company is investing $8.5 million in the spa — an additional $2 million than was previously planned.

“Building a spa is always a challenge itself, and we are confident that we have the best team to build our second Nordik Spa-Nature,” said Martin Paquette, president and owner of Nordik Spa-Nature.

Construction was slightly delayed because developers wanted to add several more items to the facility to enhance the visitor experience. Once open, between 50 and 85 jobs will be created in the community.

As the spa will be built on a public golf course, the City of Winnipeg is leasing the land to the spa.

Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
Nordik Spa construction underway

By: Staff Writer

A Quebec-based company has started construction on a Nordik Spa at a Winnipeg golf course.

In fall 2010, city council voted to allow a Quebec spa operator to lease land at the Crescent Drive golf course. The spa was initially slated to open in late 2012.

This afternoon, company officials released a press release saying construction on the project has started. The statement attributed the delay due to changes in the project's plans.

"The beginning of the construction was delayed because we wanted to add several items to improve the experience of our clients, and thus exceed expectations," the press release said.

The statement said the cost of the project has also risen to $8.5 million from $6.5 million.

The spa is now expected to open in spring 2013, and create more than 50 new jobs.
These guys are based close to me, in Chelsea, just north of Gatineau. If what they build is anything remotely similar to what they have here you guys can look forward to something really nice.

....kind of a fun article and video of some of the cranes in Winnipeg. There are currently 4 active tower cranes operating with the potential for approximately a dozen more over the next year or so.

Cranes no longer endangered in Winnipeg

Building cranes on William Avenue. (JOE BRYKSA / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS)

There is perhaps no better sign of a city is on the move than the presence of building cranes.

The more of them that dot Winnipeg's skyline, the more developers are building and the more confidence is being shown in the local economy.

It wasn't all that long ago that building cranes were a rare sight in Winnipeg. While they're in no danger of overtaking the number of Tim Hortons locations in town, they are increasingly common, particularly downtown and in the south end.

The Free Press decided to go crane watching and see how Winnipeg's $2 billion in construction projects are coming along.

Look for the full story in Saturday's Free Press.

my old gf got me a couples spa package to the Nordik spa in quebec last year for my birthday (....i asked for a round of golf... ) anyways even though im not the spa type it was a really nice experience. The best is the three different pools that go from freezing to hot tub and the ice cold waterfall. You spend a specific amount of time in each starting from coldest to warmest and at the end of it you feel amazing. The resort was world class, hopefully the one in winnipeg is up to the same standards.

Surprisingly the sites aren't really that different in size. I roughly calculated the Soho site at 300,000 sq ft and Parcel 4 at 260,000 sq ft. You could probably put 3 towers on Parcel 4 in the same type of configuration (triangle instead of a square).

sounds awesome, this type of spa - to my knowledge - is not currently in the city, so it should be an excellent addition and im sure it will be popular

Quite the turn around, in even a few years, isn't it? At the end of the video he says in total there's ~20 cranes around the city right now...hopefully they are "momentum" cranes and not "peak" cranes

That would look spectacular, even sans one tower, on parcel 4

Would there be height restrictions around the museum?

Certainly, even a smaller bunch of residential units there would be leagues better than a water park, considering the forks is right next door.

I had to watch the video again to just dream what Winnipeg could be. If only someone would just strike a HUGE oil patch in the province already!

How has Winnipeg been doing with regards to the availability of cranes? Thunder Bay ran out of cranes back in the spring for a few weeks when too many projects were needing them at once.

This is the most depressing building I've seen in recent memory. It looks like a detention centre. I love modern design, but this is just a big white box with zero curb appeal. Bleak to the extreme.
