Growing up and until the last week of July 2012, I thought that Damasascus was the largest city in Syria. Didn't realize the economic powerhouse and population centre of the country was on the Turkish border.

Same for Germany, and the same for Italy. Everyone thinks Rome and Berlin are the biggest.

Rome is the largest in Italy, Berlin is the largest in Germany and Sydney in Australia.

Milan is the largest metro area in Italy, by a fair margin IIRC. Sydney is still quite a bit larger than Melbourne, though I believe the latter is growing considerably faster.

Dont have the skills or permission but The Tall Man with Jessica Biel superimposed a bunch of towers ontop of my small town Castlegar BC. I guess Castlegar played the big city home of Jessicas character. Blew my mind when i first saw it. Small town tower cluster!!

Since we're correcting these numbers, Essen is not a "real" city but more a urban area than anything. I wouldn't consider it Germany's largest city.
