That is awesome! UtahPlanner had told us a while ago that a college was moving into the Tribune building and i had been wondering when we would find out what it would be. The fact that the students will live on campus makes this even a better fit. It's great to see them moving from the burbs right into the heart of downtown. I can't think of a better use for this building!

An additional benefit to the students living downtown during school is that when their coursework is done, many of them will have fallen in love with downtown living and will move to another location downtown or in an urban core somewhere in the nation. To urban growth

Yeah, I love the idea--what a great use for that building. I love that the top five-six floors will be residential, and as a long-time worker in that building, I'm glad that the building itself will be renovated and reused. So very happy with this announcement.

Anyone know if the main floor will be retail or is it part of the office/classroom mix? They have gutted the main floor and it is impressive how high the ceiling is and open the space feels. It would be really awesome retail space.

Read about the Tribune building around 1 this morning. I jumped for joy, this was such great news and happy to hear that the Tribune building will be saved.

I love the idea and can't wait for it. This will help with more people living on Main Street. The local shops and restaurants will benefit from the traffic and this may help to spur more development nearby especially near Regent Street.

One nice part is that this will help reduce the need for the students to need a car to do anything after classes.

I would like to see more student housing for the U along 4th South to take advantage of Trax there.

I hope that when they want to expand in the future that they look at nearby buildings for reuse or building additional buildings in the area to enhance their campus rather than looking at returning to the suburbs.

Great news about the Trib Building! What a cool life that will be for those students. Sounds like a great way to study for a year or two. And I agree, I have a hard time seeing those students not falling in love with Urban Living.
I read the article this morning and someone in the comments section (yes, I can't help but read them) actually made a good point. They mentioned that if/when the Film and Media center gets built in the old Utah Theater, it would be right across the street from this school, which could create a really great connection and vibrancy. With the UPAC next door, and Ballet West around the corner, I'd say we'd have quite a great little cultural district.
Also, with groups like EA being downtown, it's no wonder a school like this would want to get in the mix. I hope it's just the beginning. It does seem like a scenario where the growth of these arts and media industries accelerates with each new addition.

That is awesome news about Neumont University!!! 2013 is going to be another amazing year for our fair city, what with all the projects like: Sugar-hole, Granite Building, Wilmington Ave., streetcar, new Trax and Frontrunner lines, UPAC, and all the other low rise residential coming online all throughout downtown!

The old University TRAX corridor is becoming quite an educational and cultural area.
With the University of Utah, SLCC downtown campus, SLC main library, eagle gate college, Utah theater, Neumont University, LDS Business College, B.Y.U. SLC, UPAC, Abravanel Hall, Assembly Hall, the Leonardo, Tabernacle, Church History Museum, Family History Library, Church History Library, Conference Center and Conference Center Theater, Clark Planetarium, the Children's Museum, ECT, you get the idea.

Wow. That kinda blew my mind, RC14. Great point. Throw in also the offerings that are at the U of U, like the Museum of Fine Arts, Pioneer Theater Company, and Rice Eccles Stadium.

Not sure it has been pointed out that University of Utah now operates housing (apartments/suites) at 349 1st Ave. (approx. D Street) and 43 South 400 East. I think these were both LDS Business College dorms when LDSBC was at S.Temple and D Street but both now have fairly prominent U of U signs.

Yeah, these are part of housing with the U of U and have been for 3-4 years. Downtown Commons I and II. It is test to see how students like the urban living. Both are pretty old, so I could see something newer and modern closer to trax being VERY popular. Housing fills to capacity every year (including downtown). Alcohol is still prohibited however, because its considered university. Allow alcohol and building something new close to trax and bingo.

I know I'm in trouble when people start calling me Urbanboy Though it may not be PC, I strongly object to anyone trying to pass off the conference center as an educational institution, but after reading his post again, I see he may have just been referring to the conference center as a "cultural facility," which makes more sense. My bad.

I've always supported the creation of a year round farmers market and loved the idea of putting it in the Depot, when it was first suggested. One thing I question though is there vision that eventually it will be open 6-7 days a week. That is ridiculous IMO

Cleveland's West Side Market, which is truly a gem, a beautiful facility and anchors an entire neighborhood just west of downtown Cleveland is only open four days a week, Monday & Wednesday 7-4 and Friday & Saturday 7-6, and this is in a city with 450k people and an MSA of 2.8 million. So I don't see the need for more than 3 or 4 days for SLC's year round market.


If you ever find yourself in Cleveland this is a must see!!!
