A fifth of the country speaks French as a first language. It's a predominantly English country, sure, but it isn't as if French isn't a large important part of the mix.

Winnipeg is definetly under-rated. I seriously hope Winnippeg makes an economic comeback. There's too much "nothing" between Regina and Toronto! Roads and Rails, Infrastructure.

Winnipeg has been making an economic comeback for more than half a decade.

I thought this was really cool! I just learned about this right now. Apologies to everyone who already knew this:

The LED lights on the CN Tower actually show images! They are not just random twinklings of rainbow light.

Watch the vid below and read the article about it.
(P.S. Keep watching until the Mounties show up... you'll be amazed.)

It's people saying things like that that gets Quebec pissed off.

Winnipeg may not have a big skyline, but the architecture is second to none. I was amazed at the quality of buildings from the 1880s right up to present day. There are so many gems there. Manitoba Hydro is a great addition, but I'm hoping for 2-3 larger office buildings before the decade is out. A smaller version of Wells Fargo in Minneapolis would be perfect.

I suppose the chances of that aren't great.
That said, there are school divisions in Saskatchewan and Alberta where french is part of their programs (i.e. mandatory for those school divisions), some of my friends in Calgary went to schools where they did learn french until grade 3 or 5 (I forget exactly) and there are some french institutions there like in Edmonton, there is a small U of A post secondary education institute where students can take courses in french. I've also seen the french and language studies in Regina first hand and chatted with some people there, they know french pretty well.

Sorry I'm taking this all OT haha

As for 2-3 larger office buildings before the decade is out, if you mean height-wise...I can say Winnipeg will have 4 new skyscrapers, 3 specifically downtown within the next 2 years underway (3/4 of them for sure)

but only one will have office, and it won't be a pure office building.

Before the decade is out (2020), I would be surprised if Winnipeg received 2-3 new exclusive office towers. I will bet there will be more than just 2-3 more skyscrapers done, for sure, but they will likely all be residential or mixed use.

I just don't see which company in Manitoba would build a new tower akin to MB Hydro.

Though some posters in the MB/SK section who are in the know have stated there will be some significant projects coming the next several years. Whether office will be among that, remains to be seen. One area Winnipeg is lucky is its the sole economic centre of Manitoba, so all the companies that want to build office space don't have any other choice but Winnipeg to set an HQ or RO down. That said, most of the office space Winnipeg's been getting lately has been suburban, and not downtown. There's been a few companies who have opted out of downtown, had they chosen their downtown location, we may have already had one of those new office towers U/C right now.

Considering Winnipeg's size, its not bad that there's at least going to be several new skyline and skyscraper additions in the next few years, not including the Human Rights Museum being finished.

While I agree that it benefits us all the have Toronto prosper, and I'm over the moon watching it grow in to a big-time city, the 'Toronto is the face out our nation abroad' statement just isn't true - at least not where I've been living for the past few years. When I tell people here in China or just recently in Singapore that I'm from Canada, the first city they say is Vancouver. I can't tell you how many people I've met over here that think Vancouver is Canada's largest city. Maybe the Olympics had something to do with it, but Toronto is normally the second city mentioned.

I think that's the true benefit of Canadian cities. There isn't one that dominates over the others internationally.

I did meet an Australian woman who was surprised to learn that Vancouver was 3rd largest. I suppose that's a common misconception amongst uneducated Pacific Rim people. Vancouver does have high visibility being the largest city in western Canada, but I'm not convinced that Toronto's low visibility in Asia-Pacific will be maintained much longer. Toronto's just growing too large not to notice.

No, it's people who take a compliment I gave to Montreal out of context, start bitching about it, and then can't take reality, that gets Quebec pissed off.

It really shows the iconic heritage skyscrapers like Sunlife and Tour de la Banque Royale! So nice.

No matter how large it gets, you'll never be able to see it all the way from China!

Few people spend several hours a day combing the interweb for skyline photos..

My friends could point out a city because of it's skyline and they don't have the slightest interest in skyscrapers.
