Apparently not on the arena and arena district. His voting record (or absences) on some key issues are worthy of a deeper scan...I will put this in the hopper.

Re: Iveson Arena - He is not anti-arena, he just is in disagreement with the deal struck and feels it was not the best for our City.

Oscar Meyer?

And I think you mean "the last thing we need is a right wing council".....

What we need is a mayor that is in the center . To for on the right is worse then being on the left . All that i know is that mayor Mandel believes in Edmonton and is the best leader i have seen in Edmonton. Edmonton has always struggled to be a city with vision ,but now we have a visionary council and we need to keep it or Edmonton could take a major step back wards. In civic politics you can never be truly left or wright be cause running a city is like running a small country with in a country and the only way to get recognised is to compromise. I just beleave that mayor Mandel does a good job of bringing people together despite their political identities.

how hard is it to press the new thread button? Just go back to the Edmonton sub section and look for a button near the top that says "New thread"

Thank you for explaining that. As mentioned, when it comes to IT related stuff, my personal secretary has the reign on that domain. I will now-in the morning-give it a shot on my phone.

Iconic new arena would bolster our brand as great northern city
Edmonton Journal August 27, 2012 StoryPhotos ( 8 )
An artist’s conception of Edmonton’s proposed downtown arena. We first heard Mayor Stephen Mandel’s mantra of “no more —” at his 2005 state of the city address hosted by the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce at the Shaw Conference Centre (a good example of unique Edmonton architecture). We agree with the mayor as much now as we did then.

Nice little editorial: Love the comments about the Legislature Annex, possibly the worst abonination in our city's history.

Very poignant and well articulated! If this and mayor Mandel's alluding regarding spending 150 mil each for rec centres in all corners but cant invest 500 mil to revitalize downtown to our 'nayer sayers,' then we truly have a problem...

With out a doubt Edmonton needs the Arena district as a whole to be developed . I beleave that if and when it happens it will bring to downtown Edmonton a construction boom that will out pace any thing Edmonton has ever seen nor will ever see again. I do beleave what will help is when we hear from the Katz group its immediate plans and what they will be building at the same time as the arena.

New David Staples column:
http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/2012/08...-hangover-in-downtown-says-city-booster/

Quote:
But the arena project has dragged out too long and is danger of failing, warns city booster Ruth Kelly, publisher of Venture Magazine. “I have some concerns that it is falling off the rails,” Kelly says.

“I think they are losing momentum right now. I think they’ve lost a fair amount of community support. I think things like the current players and NHL discussions will impact their ability. If they’re not on the ice next season, how much further does that erode support?”

Kelly points to anti-arena misinformation driving away support and worrying politicians hoping for re-election in October 2013. ”We’re going into an election cycle and I think that unless it gets pinned down in the next relatively short period of time, they’re in trouble. That is my reading.”

What truly is hyprocritical with this is that our government can spent 2 billion to study carbon capture for the oil companies whom are profitting billions-even during recession- but 100 million to help spurs our dowmtown is mind boggling! It is more than an arena; it is akin to putting on a suit and tie for the world. The same will be said for Calgary when they're ready for their rebuilt. Dubai is a find example of dressing up to welcome the world. Imagine the world thinking: the second largest oil reserve in the world and the downtown of their city is empty and lifeless. Great message Alberta government!

As pro arena advocates we must lean on city council to push this through. It is going to take a very strong willed Mandel to get the job done before he leaves office. I think what we will see is a major stalling by the province to make any commitments for further infrastructure funding. I think the city will have to approve the Arena now and find the 100 million shortfall after the shovels hit the ground. This may be disturbing to some on council but the alternitive will be fare worse.
