Great-looking movie produced and filmed in Vancouver. It's definitely got a Ken Russell vibe to it.

The score was done by Vancouver's Jeremy Schmidt of Black Mountain and Sinoia Caves fame.

Newfoundland's Anne Murray. Of course, it's a DIFFERENT Anne Murray than Canada's Anne Murray.

And, equally of course, ours isn't quite awful... but awesome.

She's awfulsome.

And this one is truly awful. My parents (who are the only people in my life I would EVER play Newfoundland folk music around) make me turn this off as soon as I play it... but I actually like her, "I can't really sing so I'ma half yodel..." thing she has going on with this song...

The lyrics are from around the time that the Newfoundland Railway was replaced with the Trans Canada Highway (1950s-60s).

COME HOME, THE FIELDS ARE GREEN NOW!
THE OCEAN BLUE LAPS THE SHORE!
COME HOME, NOW, LOVE OF MY LIFE!
WE'LL LIVE AND LAUGH ONCE MORE!

THE HIGHWAY STRETCHES FOR MILES NOW!
YOU'LL PASS BY BLUE LAKES AND PONDS!
AND THEN AT THE END OF THE HIGHWAY,
YOU'LL SEE YOUR OWN ST. JOHN'S!

COME HOME, THE FIELDS ARE GREEN NOW!
THE OCEAN BLUE LAPS THE SHORE!
COME HOME, NOW, TO YOUR ISLAND!
AND WE'LL LAUGH AND LIVE ONCE MORE!

HE MUST BE FREED FROM THIS FACTORY!
AND HEREGO HE'LL LEAVE TORONTO!
HE'LL GO WHERE HE BELONGS!
AND WHERE HE KNOWS THE SONGS!

THERE WAS A PLACE WHERE THE WIND IN THE MEADOWES
WHISPERS A RESPONSE TO THE ROAR OF THE SEA
WHERE ONE SUMMER DAY HE WHISPERED
A RESPONSE TO THE LOVE IN ME!!!

So, take a Quebec story, translate it into English...

And it becomes about Newfoundland, ha! Love it.

Interesting story. Thanks for sharing it.

The Quebec original was actually filmed in Harrington Harbour, which is on the Lower North Shore going towards Blanc-Sablon and the Labrador border.

There are some similarities with NL in that part of Quebec. I think they may even have Mummers!

You can't deny that if any two musicians were made for each other, it was them.

I'm sorry, did I call them musicians? I mean embarrassments.

I saw this at Fantasia festival last year and it reminded me of early 70's films like THX 1138, Logan's Run etc. Dysfunctional future, mind control, creepy futuristic control centre stuff. Beautifully shot but no plot and I hated the ending. If you're a genre fan though, definitely see it.

La Grand Séduction was a hilarious film! The great lengths the town go to convince the doctor that they are cricket fans is a scream. Even the name, Sainte-Marie-la-Mauderne, hehe! It will be interesting to see how the remake goes with Hollywood actors pretending to be Newfoundlanders.

Ken Scott, the guy who wrote La Grand Séduction, is having another of his movies remade. He wrote and directed Starbuck, which was a big hit last summer in Quebec. Vince Vaughn will be taking on Patrick Huard's role in the Hollywood remake.

Deadmau5 has a new video coming out that is apparently the most expensive music video ever for an electronic artist.

Two problems:

a) The song is terrible. I used to love his music but lately it's just not doing it for me.

b) Who the hell watches (and for that matter, plays) music videos anymore?
