It's my opinion that the short buildings, and especially the tim hortons should never have been allowed to be built on terminal. I think that the Radical entertainment building and the similar massed office building next door are a far better fit for the area.

I'd consider Main to be the boundary of the downtown peninsula.

All I'm saying is that if someone asks me which way to downtown, I'm not pointing them at the False Creek flats. There's nothing wrong with naming something in a meaningful way. "Mercedes-Benz False Creek", that works, no?

I agree, same goes with the Ford dealership recently built, and heck, I'll throw in the Porsche dealership as well, with its parking lot fronted building that will be built in the same category as the new TH building.

I believe that crane is actually for the Porsche dealership, next block over to the east.

The former James Schouw project at Hornby and Helmcken (Artemisia) has been resurrected, not sure by whom but they are starting construction.

Those are really only placeholders until the market improves.
The same way that those dealerships' former locations are being redeveloped.

wasn't it the cities plan to make that like an "automall" move all the dealerships from elsewhere down there...

Sort of - I think that the "place holder" mode the area is in after the lull in high tech office space. Containers seems to buck that trend though.

Seems like a lot of trouble to go through for mere placeholders though? These seem to be very permanent buildings that will be there for a long time.

they rezoned the area to allow the dealerships down there too, i don't think the city knows what to do with that area, they lost out by changing the zoning and losing one of the last industrial areas in the city, than the whole tech boom failed and the area never developed as they thought it would, no wthey have some dream idea of what to do with it - could take decaeds to finally come around

a place-holder could be there 20 years, the notion is that this isn't a building set to occupy that space for 60+ years.

unlike, say, the palm jebel ali-level internationally contemptible, vancouver-worst kitsch that the gold-chained gino schouw seems to be set to throw up on that hornby corner. if there was ever a building that appealed to fob investors and the marginal chinese metropolis sight-unseen investor set... at least vancouver's planning department will have a sort of touchstone to mark the zero point on the scale.

I have to admit, this post is a riddle to me. Interpret this - help me understand your lightning fast mind.

I know this first appeared on VanCityBuzz yesterday http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2012/08/giant-pillows-robson-square-pop-rocks/
Here are some more pix I took while they were setting up.

The Bay was also doing a new perfume launch to the beat of 'These Boots were Made for Walking' in front of the gallery. Expect more of this kind of promotion from them.

^Seems well attended

I don't know about those pop rocks (love the reference though) but I do like how often the city is closing down the Robson square stretch of Robson to traffic. I hope this leads to a permanent closure.

As for the temp buildings, well real estate is a long term game, and a "placeholder building" could very well be for 15 to 20 years.

There is no way the flats will be completely built out in 10 years regardless of what gets built on them in the meantime so I'm totally fine with underbuilt filler in between now and a total buildout.

A couple of the newer auto dealerships on Terminal (including I believe both Ford and Benz) are on ~20 year land leases, so they are being (or have been) built with the expectation that they will be fully depreciated and possibly demolished at the end of the term.

A bunch of giant white blobs and some girls behind police tape acting out a Robert Palmer video. And they say Vancouver has no culture.

I reported on wednesday that the former Artemisia project is back on track. James Schouw is still connected and has partnered with another developer. The signage on the sidewalk is from Boffo Developments. Changing City reports prices from $935K to $3.65 million for 21 units. http://changingcitybook.com/2012/08/17/artemisia-hornby-street/
Here's the link stating construction has started in july. http://www.jamesschouw.com/artemisia/

Here's a couple of pix from today.

A hole has been dug by the alley, possibly for the crane?
