I'm not sure how to go about changing things but, we should stop accepting mediocre design because it's 'better than what was there"...that's not good enough!

I'm glad the entire Crum & Forster building was saved. One of the reasons for this city's soul-less reputation is it's lack of visible history.

Ive always wondered why its so hard to make a good looking parking garage? Cant they at least cover that crap in glass or something? I mean, they put all of this effort into their buildings, and then just shit out a huge ugly parking garage next to it, makes no sense.

If something like 50% of the surface area of the garage is not fully open to the air, it has to be mechanically ventilated, which is both expense and loud. This is one of the main factors in the parking deck form we are so used to seeing.

You can certainly do something like the deck below with perforated screens though (that make interesting patterns in the wind).

Midtown restaurants/retail are dropping like flies lately.

5 Napkins - Overpriced and pretty meh, imo. I went there once and felt like I could do a lot better at Vortex. They spend some absurd amount of money on a crazy build out, but then it just seemed to be a halfhearted operation. Not sad to see it go, honestly.

Table 1280 (at the High) - Never went there, so I don't have an opinion. Possibly part of its problem?

Drew Lewis - Retail really just doesn't do well in Midtown, does it?

As more and more restaurants open up, existing places are going to have to try really hard to run a really tight operation. Midtown is establishing itself as one of Atlanta's destination dining scenes, but with 5-10 restaurants in the pipeline at any point in time, we're going to see a ton of failures over the next couple years.

Hopefully Midtown ends up with a better dining scene as this process moves along (right now I think both Decatur and West Midtown beat out Midtown, and with a vastly smaller number of restaurants). Best of luck to Lure, Mi Cocina, Intermezzo, Senor Patron, STK, Cucina Asellina, etc etc. It's not going to be easy for you.

Guys, for better organization why don't you put the transportation posts in the Atlanta section? A few of the Atlanta forumers have been complaining that they're off topic from this thread.

And as for the TSPLOST posts, there's an ongoing thread for that, here:

Drew Lewis was waaaaaaaay over priced! I think it something along the lines of HM or something a little more fun then I think it would be much better. Boy Next Door I think would do great there. I wonder how Clothing Warehouse is doing...

The problem with Drew Lewis wasn't price, it was selection and the fact that it was really the only soft goods store around. Their marketing probably could have been a bit better, too.

I happen to get around the entire city of Atlanta, and felt like sharing pics of development in greater Atlanta because the core is already extensively covered... some people enjoy that... some don't. If you don’t care, just skip over it.

But I guess some people on here want to dictate what is important Atlanta development to cover is and what is not. Not sure where this attitude comes from, maybe bitterness from the TSPLOST loss. What would you rather have me do? Post pics of Midtown like everyone else; which is repeat views of Sky house/12th Midtown/new hotel on 10th/remodeling Hyatt/and possibly GA Tech Stadium & Tennis Center. Or maybe I should just repost and comment on the Atlanta business/ajc/creative loafing/curbed news articles. Also, there is plenty of discussion regarding retail in Midtown and the politics of TSPLOST. That is about as irrelevant to development as anything I post. I think some of these comments have a huge Midtown bias and are partially hypocritical. There are minimal postings regarding infrastructure projects such as streetscapes, new sewer pumping stations, bike trails, improved roads, etc.

Thanks for the tip about the other forum; I am looking for a forum where people post actual construction projects that are likely to happen or are happening in Atlanta; not a bunch of people drooling over proposals that may never see the light of day and then complaining about building aesthetics without putting their money where their mouth is.

If my picture contributions are not welcome by the mass of blog readers here, I’ll go seek this new home.

IMO they are welcome; most of us are interested in the whole metro area and with a dearth of building in the center it is useful to know what else is going on. For example, the new buildings for CDC in Dekalb are of interest though not in Atlanta. If the time comes that we have tower cranes all over Atlanta City (as in the 90's and early 00"s); then perhaps we can be more restrictive.

We aren't all opposed to seeing a variety of construction photos from around Metro Atlanta. Don't take his negative response to your posts as if we all feel that way - we don't.

I appreciate the pictures too Hamster. You've shown pics of projects I wasn't aware of so thanks for your contributions.

Sorry...I really didn't mean to step on your tail!
I'm sure we all appreciate the updates and photos on projects happening all over the city but I think the The City Compliation thread is a place where size really does matter. I assume (correctly, I hope) that the majority of the people viewing the Compilation thread are from other areas and are looking to see what is going on in our fair city. They probably don't want to wade through yogurt store openings and tire shop expansions to get to stuff that has a bit more of an impact.
Please keep posting but please consider showing the smaller developments in the Atlanta Project thread. Thanks and I sincerely look forward to many more updates in whatever thread you decide to post!

If Its new construction in the city by all means post your pictures or updates. If you like new construction you always take a seccond look while driving or walking by.

Its not like you posted pictures of a new abortion clinic.

I'll stick with another old timer here and say a gas station or Chase bank outparcel improvement are not relevant to the master Atlanta Construction Thread, which is on a forum with the likes of New York City, Philadelphia, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, etc. I'd rather see daily/repeat 77 12th updates than fresh updates on a new daycare opening up.

I'll also say that we have moved on from TSPLOST, but it was relevant to development and nobody is really active in Atlanta's subforum in the Southeast thing and it was nearly a national discussion with so many cities watching to see what happened AND I'd say it's ok for some of us who have contributed meaningfully to this thread for the better part of a decade now to be able to rant and go off topic every once in a blue moon. It happens in every city's construction forum. If you just joined in the past year, have just 20 posts under your belt, haven't taken the effort to go out, edit and post pics and/or haven't really contributed meaningfully beside your opinion on things, don't complain when we do. Thanks.

And thanks AtlantaMustang for the construction updates and finally RENDERINGS of those Buckhead projects. It looks like the Camden project will front East Andrews Dr directly, at least I hope. I hope it's not behind some gate with parking in front. The project next to the St. Regis is what I expected when the developer was announced (same developer of the Windsor at Midtown, which I look out upon from my window at Mayfair), but still I am underwhelmed there. Considering the quality of the St. Regis construction and other buildings on that block I expected a bit more.

And I can't believe streetcars have already arrived! Last time I was down there (within 2 weeks I think) there was no indication of real construction or track being laid. I guess they'll be in storage for a while.

And thanks shivtim for your large photo contribution (you stole my thunder this weekend and I'm glad because it's a real hassle and effort to get all those photos!). I walked by the new Mamanoe's Grocer tonight and it says Opening August 21. Yea right! I'll pay them for my groceries if they open by then. Still, I'm excited; it will bring vibrancy to that corner I hope.

And thanks jnihiser for your photos! Drove by Antico tonight and they have definitely started on their bar across the street. Still, I think it's a stretch for the Business Chronicle to call that area an Italian Village simply because a passionate chef/operator/businessman has capitalized on the area's interest and good taste with pizza (moreso he has capitalized on Atlanta's complete dearth of good pizza anywhere and now others have copied). It's not like Italians go out of their way to live there now and go there, LoL.

Haha perfect analogy for Skyhouse. I'm on my nighttime medicine and basically shouldn't be awake and typing right now but I'm envisioning hamster or rat turd, the kind that comes with the sound effect one makes with your mouth that sounds like ... those assembly line turds, you know? (not alluding to you Hamster, I promise! ). Skyhouse definitely just shat out a garage and it will just sit next to it now for many years. You should see the garage in person - it's friggin HUGE. It doesn't seem like it would be large from photos, but it's it's own friggin mid-rise. It could have had its own construction forum thread! And those retail bays? We all knew they would never lease up. I'm sure Novare never underwrote any retail leasing, but they really in physical form have showed the world that they did not underwrite any retail leasing. Those bays are impossible.

I can only hope that 105 6th St will be better, can only hope...and pray.
