^ At least they won't need to put bulkheads in for services.

Concrete is definitely the superior choice when it comes to sound deadening. Steel decks can be bouncy and act funny when they are loaded (or unloaded)outside of spec.

Drug or related, Guaranteed.
Based on the description of the perps and the type of vehicle involved, yes, very likely related to that type of activity.

Bingo

A very timely and positive response from Transportation.

'This crosswalk channel will be replaced in the very near future.
The contractor will be scheduling this to be done over the next couple of weeks so be prepared for more disruption along 105 Street.'

Didn't know that all black guys in a 'nice SUV' meant drug or gang related... careful boys.

I thought I heard Black SUV and not that they were black men. Mind you, I haven't read the papers yet so. . .

Maybe I misjudged that those involved in the shooting were Joey patrons.

Nevertheless, CMD, I still hold with my observation that the patronage @ Joey has not been very desirable as of late. Every time I walk by there, I see less of the business and fashionable types I've been accustomed to in the past, and too many of the Ed Hardy/rig pig/gangsta-wannabe set.

I just hope the new Cactus Club hearkens back to what Joey used to be in terms of the type of people it attracts.

From the Global bit on the news last night the description of how it went down is what I based my assumptions on.

Historically, most guys who get gunned down in broad daylight on a busy street in that fashion are typically involved in some type of nefarious activity

My party days were done a long time before I moved here in 2004.. by that time the Roost had become the haunt of 18 year old girls and their terrified BF's anyways so I think I went there twice before it closed... but chatting with some older friends who remember the days that it was a private club, and along with Flashback and Boots virtually shaped the underground scene in Edmonton to one that was widely known to be one of the best at the time.. and it represents to a lot of folks, who yes, may be still clinging to some former glory, to be more than just another bar that came & went and whose lives were shaped by going to these places that allowed them to be who they were, in an otherwise inhospitable city (back in the day)

Look at the scene now. Horrorific. Once Junction closes, for the first time in a long time Calgary will actually have a better gay nightlife than Edmonton, which is pretty sad.

I had actually seen the big R and didn't put it together, but a lot of folks think it's very disrespectful, and I respect and understand their point of view, becuase to me it's a pretty obvious knock-off
Why are we talking about a long out of business nightclub like it's some kind of religious shrine? Yeah, I get the Roost was famous all over the continent, some would say the world, in the 80s and 90s but it's gone now. I agree with Cold, the use of the letter "R" (hardly original when the Roost used it BTW) is more of an homage to what was on that street, than a ripoff. And yes, I'm sure the owners of Roast knew exactly what they were doing.

You say the original owner is "furious". Is this because he plans on re-opening the Roost or does he want to get into the coffee house category as well with a clever turn of phrase on the name?

Copyrights work like this BTW (lots of experience with them). You have to prove prior and continuous usage. In other words if the business has been mothballed for a number of years (like the Roost) the argument for owning the name or likenesses weakens considerably. Even more so when the new name or likeness is in a different category (like Roast).

Go to Roast (great space) have a latte and chill. At least the operators are giving acknowledgement and a sense of history as to what was on the street before.

Looks like a great project. I like the 99th one too, but the 109th is impressive for the area. Hopefully we'll see more of this kind of stuff soon along these arterials!

I think the gay community is a bit upset that the haunts that were very familiar to them are no longer and it is unclear what will be there to replace it. Right now, appropriating the name without providing a new space to the community is rubbing salt in the wound.

You should see the Vancouver Joeys at Bentall Centre on the weekend. I think the d-bags are attracted to the machine-gun lamp fixtures in the wine bar. I'm sure the "artist" behind the lamps was being ironic, but nothin says "bring the wife downtown" than wannabees posing with the lamps.

Gotta admit, some of the ladies that hang out with the gansta-wannabe's are good eye candy though, especially in the summer time.

I'm married but hey, I'm not blind!

My comment had nothing to do with their 'colour' as I could give two sh*ts about what colour they are. I based my comments on the fact that witnesses saw the perps shoot someone at close range and then went running into a black 'chromed out' Range Rover.

I'm horrified that such a shooting had to happen in broad daylight right in the parking lot at a restaurant only a few blocks from where I live. I hope the cops catch the bastards responsible for that murder.

But this isn't the first time that a shooting had happened at that same Joeys. I remember that a few years ago, there was a shooting inside that same restaurant. No one got killed, but a man did get injured.

^why are you horrified? Things happen and do so. Sad yes, but events regularly unfold at random all around us.

Sorry, should've mentioned not overly horrified, just a little. Yes, things like that do happen, but of course you know it's not like they happen every day here.

Listen, I'm actually a fairly regular visitor to Joey's on Jasper, among other places, especially when the patio's open, and will continue to be so. As a longtime resident of Oliver (nearly 20 years now!) and one who also knows how to spot trouble from a long ways off, I've never had to seriously fear for my public safety in my neighbourhood. In fact, I'll be moving to a new place next week - only a block and a half away.

Indeed. Work in an ER for a week, you'll realize how messed up it is out there.

OK Just got back from another meeting in Calgary and I now have building envy. Not the downtown, I am talking the SAIT Campus. My god there is some great looking imaginative buildings on campus.

As for the downtown, yes some of the buldings are great but with the latest storms blowing through the wind speeds through the DDC are getting dangerously high. As today blown out glass and also a high level rescue of guys on a swing stage. I person I was sitting beside comented when the warnings went out that there were going to be issues downtown. He should know he was with emergency management.

Reason A B C I dont go to Joeys DT. It use to be a laid back sexy cool atmosphere. Now I find it loud and obnoxious. Not to mention the very inadequate service and menu that has to be updated.

P.s Its now the 7-11 of eateries IMO.
