I'm there. I don't understand why the new design cannot incorporate the existing building. Also, what kind of man can draw up that design and still consider himself an architect. A Parkade looks like it has more thought, heart and soul put into it.

It depends on the client, most of them are build it now and build it cheap!!

To replicate a Heritage building takes time and money. Unless you get a govt agency most renters won't pay the higher rent to be in a building that looks old on the outside.

Some buildings, you find out it has an architect and think, "they needed a third party to design this?"

I usually refer to them as "contractors wet dreams".

Someone here at SSP made up the term and it stuck with me. Strip malls are a great example.

Some strip malls look like tilt up concrete precast wall. They probably have an engineer design and stamp them and not an architect.

I am not asking them to Save the building, but at least save the Facade of it. And do something like that Firm did about a block north of this building, Old with Ultra Modern, and not PRECAST CRAP. I would love to see the Facade of this, and surrounding it a nice Glass facade of the new building, I don't care what they do behind the Facades , just make it look good from the street. Because each time I see the MRHA building I gasp, and they cheap'd out and did not even finish it the way it was designed to be.

The engineer will be designing and stamping the structural drawings regardless of the project.

The architect/owner decides on how it should look.

Ultimately the owner is the one fronting the money, so they have the final say. Ugly building? Blame the owner first.

I always thought city planners have the right to question the esthetics of the building once it is upon review... especially for downtown which is suppose to be the postcard of our city. If that is not the case well then the WRHA building on main is a fine example of that. That theatre facade should of been saved imo.

Its time the city of Winnipeg developed minimum standards. Main street is a signature street and this location is near the Forks and Portage & Main. What city would allow such a vanilla development void of any architecture so close to the financial heart and our number 1 tourist attraction! We might as well let them build a dollar store! Enough with prostituting ourselves all in the name of development and tax revenue, time to take a stand Mr. Katz!

There is this for downtown http://www.winnipeg.ca/ppd/planning/pdf_folder/DntwnDesignGuidelines.pdf , but they are just guidelines and may or may not be enforced by the Standing Policy Committee on Downtown Development, Heritage and Riverbank Management as they see fit

After five long years, the owner of the Excelsior condominium complex on Waterfront Drive has finally landed a major restaurant tenant for its building.

that brazilian place was mentioned in the restaurant thread, glad to know my hopeful guess of location was correct. That is one big space, it would be nice if a rooftop patio was opened on top as that would be on hell of a night-time dining view. Although i could see residents there shutting that idea down fairly quickly.

also be nice if this spurred some more dining options in those commercial units in the condo buildings along waterfront. Be nice for it to have some actual off-hour pedestrian traffic.

Let's be realistic here....they're going to end up tearing the building down and it'll turn into a vacant lot for however many years.

This is pretty neat. A new coffee shop is opening at 751 Corydon and is hosting a soft opening where they are selling models from several local architecture firms (5468796, 1x1, DIN Projects, Sputnik, etc). The coffee shop is called MAKE. the event is this Friday.
