According to media reports as of June 2012 there is a new franchise owner (Hi-Flyer Food Canada ) for KFC/Taco Bell for Manitoba and Alberta .

The previous owner (Priszm LP) went under so that may be the reason money was not being put in the Manitoba locations to make them look better.

Hi-Flyer is a successful KFC operator in the Philippines so they probably have some money and ideas to improve the locations.

The KFC/TacoBell at Dunkirk Drive-Dakota / St Marys Rd in St Vital makes money, it is all ready a fairly new building though. I know it makes the majority of its money ( KFC side ) through take out and delivery.

I don't know, they spend all their time loitering at Zellers so I never see them.

The largest bucket meal is just under 40 bucks after taxes, and drinks for four people is another 10 bucks (because it doesn't include drinks). But you usually have chicken left over the next morning even if someone eats all the skin off of it overnight.

Another place that gets expensive fast is Taco Time. A meal for one is about 6 bucks but try to feed four and all of a sudden you're shelling out 55.30 for two dozen burritos.

I've found that the "value meal" prices and quantities at the major fast food chains are simply not worth it anymore. I'd much rather pay only a dollar or two extra and get said food at a local burger stand / drive in. Heck, then there's the five-guys premium which I'll gladly pay as well.

I was at Five Guys on Monday. Worth every single penny (nickel?).

Bell recently opened sa cell phone shop in Portage Place to go along with the MTS, Rogers, Fido and recently added Koodoo shops.

In all honesty I didn't even know Bell offered cell phone coverage in MB. It must be something new.

Bell started service in Manitoba on Aug 1. Right now they share towers in Manitoba with Telus so they have the same footprint of service in Manitoba.

They also have a store in Kildonan Place and Polo Park as well as selling out of the Source stores which Bell owns.

Some St Vital news:

Toy R Us Express has moved into the old HMV space. I'm not sure if it is a permanent move or not.It was rumored the H&M might take over the spot, and Pearl Vision next door.

Teavana has now taken over Teaopia. (This is a nation wide change)

Pearl Vision moved right next to Sears

Toy R US moved from location beside the Bay (they were in the old Disney Store location)

Came across this and thought it was funny. Its a Portage Place ad from the 80's updated to 2010.

It didn't seem too bad when I was there. At least it is bright inside. Our downtown mall is really, really dark inside. Everything is brown and yellow. And it was put on top of what was once our version of Portage and Main.

Lets give Portage Place a few more years (last chance?). With the NHL back in the city (Lockout or not), the area around the MTS Centre is in the early stages of seeing major private investment. Portage Place could stand to benefit from some of this activity, not to mention the crowds at MTS Centre. Further to that, the residential development eyed for the MPI lots could add some much-needed residents with disposable income to the area.

Blue Moon (the building with the giant orb growing out of it on Corydon) has moved to 109 Pacific Ave. Old building is for lease.
