This and that...

1. Does anyone know who the new building under construction behind the Broad Street Business Centre (845 Broad) is for? Could this be another car dealership? It is set quite far back from Broad St though.

2. Also I have noticed that construction has begun on a new apartment building on Rose Street and 5th Avenue North (behind Unique Garden Centre). This building was announced a couple of years ago or so. For some reason I think it is supposed to be 4 floors.

1 - It is a new collision center for Dilawri Automotive Group. They are claiming it will be the most advanced body shop in Canada.

2 - not sure.

Awesome pics guys...really nice skyline shots of Regina.

City is very impressive when considering its size...I don't think there is a city on the whole planet that is about the same size with a skyline to match! At least, I can't think of any!

Yes, we do! And it's a fact that six of our tallest/largest were originally proposed to be even taller! Furthermore, during 1963, there was even an office/hotel proposal for a development comprising of twin 45-storey towers!

Oh wow...I had no idea!

Well, a new tallest may be coming sooner than later. I've always felt that although Regina isn't the largest city in Saskatchewan, since Saskatchewan has finally found its economic stride, it could end up (and likely will end up) being the business center hub. In Alberta, something similar happened in the 40s/50s and Calgary was always the second largest city.

However, the businesses ultimately chose to locate their head offices in Calgary, over Edmonton, and the rest is history.

I think Regina could have a similar advantage. Unlike Calgary though, its the provincial capital - which would be interesting. Not every province has the provincial capital as the largest city. I know its not a d*** measureing contest between Regina & Saskatoon and I'm not trying to start anything but just from an observational POV, its interesting to speculate which direction those two cities could go.

Mind you, the future is always hard to predict (for instance Winnipeg was supposed to be the #11-12 CMA this past census according to "experts" in 2001) and Alberta's population boom (which will unlikely ever be repeated elsewhere including Alberta) benefited from inter-provincial migration more than anything, but one thing safe to predict is Saskatchewan has a very bright future. Its good to see.

These construction threads are already seeing regular activity...and when I was in Regina last month, I saw tons of development.

Does anyone know why the City is not using its new fancy permanent stage on the Plaza? Instead they have the temporary stage in use nearly daily on the FW Hill Mall. I seems like a waste.

Nobody seems to remember that the oringal estimate was $1 million. I am sure the scope broadened over time.

Jennifer Keesmat becomes T.O.'s top planner:

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/cityhall...at-appointed-toronto-s-new-chief-planner

She authored Regina's Downtown Neighbourhood Plan and also came up with the original concept for City Square Plaza - but was she not involved in the final design or construction.

A comparison diagram of all of the projects underway in Saskatchewan.

Pretty impressive for a province whose population was declining 6 years ago.

Demolition of the provincial laboratory building at 3211 Albert Street appears to have begun today. Apparently there's a Bobcat scooting around inside, gutting the interior.

The Regina Public Library should not be on your diagram. This was proposed based on the acquisition of the Mason's building, which is not happening now.

Don't remove it, change its status to a stale proposal, Caterbury gardens too. Also alot the smaller 10 story appointment's south of Victoria Ave could be added. What other towers are not in there that should be.

I was looking threw the Winnipeg thread and found this site. http://env-blogs.uwaterloo.ca/atlas/?page_id=138 Kinda interesting the construction one.

According to Reed Construction Data, the tenders have closed for the 2 new residence towers at the U Of R.

http://www.reedconstructiondata.com/project-leads/sample-leads/2012/08/03/9157662/

This does not seem correct, as the March provincial budget only allocated money for planning. There must have been a tender for some component of planning - probabaly engineering.

A little off topic, but Google Maps has added live traffic for Regina. EDIT: (Link takes you to Regina, but you have to click "Traffic" in the top right.)

It is 20 floors. Not sure of the actual height in metres. It was built in the mid 70s and and was very controversial at the time. Many Hillsdale residents were opposed to living in the shadows of the tower. There were even complaints that residents would lose privacy in their backyards.
