This is enjoyable. And you can get a taste of the highways and the ferry crossing to Newfoundland (largest passenger ferries in the world - they're basically small cruise ships).

Yesterday, we went on an all-day drive across the significant portion of the northern Avalon Peninsula. We took a few highway videos especially for you all. :-)

This is the route we took:



And, just to give you a sense of scale:



First up is the village of Heart's Content (Population: 480; Settled: 1677). This video shows almost the entirety of the village, along the main road. In rural Newfoundland, the main road through any given village or town is often the main secondary highway through the region. It ends at the lighthouse.

This next video was filmed on the Conception Bay Highway, which is typical of all highways in Newfoundland - with the exception of the Trans Canada, of course. It's the route from Harbour Main to Avondale:

And, finally, the entrance to Carbonear, one of the larger towns on this part of the Avalon Peninsula (Population: 4,739). Like most communities on the Avalon Peninsula, it was settled in the early 1600s - this one, specifically, in 1631. Here's a picture I took from the highway:

It looks like the Gaspe peninsula to me... well it's the closest thing that I've been to this.

I drove through the entire site on the weekend. It takes ~ 10 minutes of driving to drive through it all, making it feel huge. It is huge. It should be impressive when complete.

Here is a video I took on Wednesday of one of my favorite sections of highway in the world.

the #1 from Lytton to Cache Creek. It winds through the Thompson Canyon at the start, surrounded by dry Ponderosa Pine Forests, which slowly give way to hot dry sage bunchgrass.

Even though this day was a little cloudy the temps were still in the low 30s. (this same stretch was 39 degrees today)

Seeing that picture brought memories of the Royal Winter Fair. Back in the 80's western Canadians would bring livestock to Toronto (subsidized by their respective Provincial Governments) to display at the fair. During the night we would tie our cattle outside (it was much cooler for them) under the Gardiner. I think it was the GO train that passed right in front of our stalls and for a day or two the commuters were completely oblivious to our presence, but the look on their faces once they saw bulls and cows staring at them was one I would never forget.

(until the mid 70's the animals were transported by train. My dad went on that trip a couple of times, the stories he told of the experience were priceless!)

That is a great drive. But I am so glad that there is the Coqahalla (sp) to take the pressure off the TCH.

An interesting adventure on one of my favorite highways. I was wondering why I saw so many vintage trucks come through Edmonton the last few weeks. But not a good time to be on the AH. Motor Home, Tour Buses and 70 year trucks.

The best thing about this highway is A - Just how hot and dry it is throughout the summer, love driving with the windows down, and how it really is our most "southwest" feeling stretch of highway in our country.

Speaking of BC, the Coquihalla should take on the TCH designation (being the main direct route) while the Fraser Canyon highway should get a new designation (what would be available?)
