Old St. Mary demolished

By Charles Hamilton, The StarPhoenix
August 1, 2012 8:28 AM

Bill Loran watched with mixed emotion as demolition crews ripped into the elementary school he attended 75 years ago.

"I would have liked to have seen it stay, but I understand things that are old need to be replaced," said the 81-year-old Loran, who grew up in Pleasant Hill, just blocks from the historic St. Mary Community School. "It was a pretty nice looking school."

The demolition began Tuesday without much fanfare. Loran was one of a handful of people on hand to witness the demolition of Saskatoon's oldest Catholic school, which opened its doors in 1913.

A excavator dug into the side of building, kicking up sawdust insulation and gutting the classrooms where Loran spent his elementary school life. [...]

It's nice too see dining options for the north end neighbourhoods/industrial improving and expanding. I'm in the area a lot, and it can be a nightmare finding a decent meal. The Manhattan Gastropub and Summer Roll restaurant, both in the same strip mall on Primrose, are welcome recent additions.

Here's the Harvey's site with the info.

Click on Saskatchewan and you'll see a orange pin with a C on Saskatoon.

Original Joes would be good too, though. That's probably one of my favourite chain restaurants in Saskatoon... I always dig the option for two sides.

They've actually opened OJ's locations in P.A., Swift Current, Moose Jaw and Regina in the last year. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they opened a 2nd location here while they're on their Saskatchewan expansion blitz.

^^^^There's a major company or two that are currently considering new office space. Where they go will determine what gets built and what doesn't (and the timing, for that matter).

Apparently 275 2nd Ave is undergoing a redesign which could also affect it's height. There are several more office projects that seem to be coming through the pipeline for Saskatoon. I'm very proud of both Sask and Regina right now, and also impressed that Saskatoon is now starting to catch up with office proposals!

No probs! If anyone can find me a clear pic of the river landing hotel, I will attempt to make a drawing of it and add it to the database.

I just did a drawing for River Center II, it's just pending approval by the admins.

It's actually fairly easy to do drawings, while my renders are not all that high quality most of the time, they get the job done... I just use paint program in microsoft system tools and transload them to a program called ACDSee as the paint program can't save high-quality GIFs, so I use that program to save them in GIF adaptive format. Took a while to work out the kinks but it's pretty easy. I did the renders for river landing and 275 2nd street all in less than an hour.

I'm guessing these images aren't clear enough?

Hmmm, the second one could work actually.

Edit: Added drawing for River Landing Hotel now. Hopefully it and River Centre II get approved today. Will add some cool diversity to the diagram

It could, or it could mean taller. No one knows yet.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

^ Taller or shorter, what it does mean is that with a national profile company like Dundee now heading the project, it has a much better chance of actually getting built than when the untested speculators of Edgar Properties were at the helm.

I predict a nicer final product, too. From what I've heard, the wheels are turning quickly on revamping and relaunching the project.

New Taphouse

Just noticed that there is a new tap-house coming to downtown Saskatoon. "The Woods Alehouse" website says it will be opening late August. 428 2nd Ave N

Haven't seen this mentioned on the forum before, so just passing on the info.

I believe that's at 148 2nd Ave N. It appears this is an offshoot of the Paddock Wood. Should be interesting.

Seems you're right - it's a deck for The Hollows. Nice.

That's the former Willow Studio - perfect. That block of 2nd Ave needs something to liven it up (other than the McDonald's/Olympia crowd). Should help draw the 2nd Ave nightlife a little further north. I wish them well.

Dakota Dunes hotel gets $3M from Harper government

By David Hutton, The StarPhoenix, August 3, 2012

The federal government will contribute $3-million to the hotel spa set to be constructed next to the Dakota Dunes Casino south of Saskatoon, officials announced at a press conference Friday.

The $26.5 million project will break ground this fall and be completed by the summer of 2014, said Darcy Bear, chief of the Whitecap Dakota First Nation.
