Wow, that thing had a somewhat French-looking facade, especially with its gambrel roof at what, the 11th floor?

It sure is sad to see some of the more classical and/or historic construction from Pittsburgh's earlier years go by the wayside. That's why I'm torn with the 350 Fifth Avenue project. We're either going to get a great low-rise building out of a renovated historic building, or a brand new 33-story high-rise in its place. I chalk up either one of those as a win for the city.

BTW, Four Gateway Center is now starting to grow on me...

I agree, But I also think of all the awesome looking buildings they had to tear down t make way for the larger buildings we love today. If we have kept them all pittsburgh would still look like 1910. (only cleaner). The most important point of these structures are to be functional first. If the city needs more vertical room downtown to grow. Progress must continue. And yes 4 gateway is freakin sublime. Love when form follows fuction like that.

Definitely! Don't get me wrong, I love seeing Pittsburgh moving forward into the 21st Century here, but I also like seeing it retain some of its historical image of where it's been, too.

Speaking of beautiful buildings giving way to progress, I know much of what was torn down on Forbes Avenue was blight, but there were a few nice facades dating back to at least the 1920s. All in all, if it means making way for newer, taller, more state-of-the-art construction, so be it. Yes, I am referring to the project that is the Tower at PNC Plaza. I've been looking forward to that since around this time last year when "misterious companies" were buying up the parcels to make the one super parcel from which this glass behemoth will rise.

Quite different and new, not for the better in my opinion. It is as though it is a cost cutting measure getting rid of the multi-floor atriums. I hope this is not what we are getting.

I actually prefer the very first design they revealed.

Anyway, without knowing where it came from, it isn't clear whether it is an update or an older rendering.

That's the one. I like it better rectilinear, and I also like the elements of warmer colors.

For that matter, I also liked Market Square Gardens better in Core-Ten versus the new stainless-steel version (although I like the other facade tweaks).





I think the old PNC Tower plus a Core-Ten version of the Gardens would have made a great pair. The new pair is going to be a little too silver-grey for me, and generally strikes me as more boring.

I too like the first rendering of the Tower at PNC Plaza...much more angular and with sharp corners...I think it fits with the rest of PNC's buildings downtown better than that other version.

I think this rendering looks badass. The older version looks generic to me. Plus the city has plenty of angular buildings already. This PNC will be a nice contrast to the skyline.
