BB&B had their stick plunge recently and they also recently took over cost plus, maybe they put expansion plans on hold for a bit

Hmm, this is most likely the reason for no BB&Beyond in Winnipeg now. Oh well, its nothing all that special. I'm sure Target and IKEA will offer a wide variety of (made in china) "bed bath and beyond" of their own.

So, I wonder how quickly they'll move to tear down the stadium come the end of the CFL season...

McNally Polo Park was quite successful. It was collateral damage for the fiasco in Toronto. That location, opened about the same time, had the same landlord. They couldn't walk away from one without walking away from the other.

What more, it would be really nice to see that abandoned patch of gravel (former fueling station w contaminated soil?) remediated. Are there any actual plans in the works for a redevelopment here, or is that 'yet to been seen?'

I understand that the groceries are run by the Bay/Zellers. Maybe that wasn't always the case. The Bay has a lot of third party operators in there. It would be great if the grocery store could be run by a third party, and moved up to the main floor. Better traffic, better visibility, better hours.

I think the patch of gravel I supposed to become a stand alone MLCC store and the mall is awaiting the same results as River East Plaza. I believe Safeway owns the property and is waiting for the Zellers lease to expire so they can rebuild new.

Yeah, I know, I'm just kidding!
Honestly, Its a shame to see another Canadian retailer bite the dust (even if it was presently owned by foreigners). The downtown location in the bay definitely should go on as something -- hopefully this is one of the few locations they speak of operating under a different auspice. I've never been in it... I would imagine it was doing well up to this point?

Dare I suggest that redevelopment of the safeway / zellers follow a mixed-use model, and maybe have some rental / market housing attached to it, or perhaps above? There's always a need for more housing near the University.

Safeway owns it? Lease expires in March 2013, so perhaps they'll have plans ready to go shortly afterwards.
In that case, no mixed-use is likely

If you look at the Shindico rental brochure for the property it says that up to 150,000 sq ft is available for rent. That is all of the exiting footprint and then some if you add up the numbers of the existing space. http://www.shindico.com/media/com_estateagent/pictures/ea_2860pembina_brochure_13382235851.pdf

That could explain why Safeway has not put any money into this store to bring it up to their current lifestyle design standards like the majority of the stores in Winnipeg. They could shut this one down and just go with the University Heights store just north of here on Pembina by Bishop Grandon.

At one time this mall was part of the Ladco (Borger Bros) empire and was built to service the land that Ladco was developing for Ft. Richmond. Not sure who the owners are now.

The service station lot is not part of the mall land so depending on what the owners (Devon Estates?) want to do, it could be left barren just like the two demolished Esso stations a few block apart on Henderson Highway.

MLCC has a store across the street.

Rumours the local residents have heard in the recent past include them simply running out the leases until it's empty so they can demolish and build brand new including either a new Safeway or (as I heard) a Sobeys.

If Safeway does own the land I am surprised that they are using Shindico to market the leasing. When Safeway developed the River East, Kildare and Crestview malls they did the initial leasing in house from Calgary. They still have a sign with a Calgary number for River East and I think that they now have retained CBRE to do the other location

There is also nothing in the Shindoco brochure for the site that says anything about Safeway being a key tenant in the development. Usually the realtor information says join (big name retailer) in exiting new development.

This is just what I was told by one of the companies I mentioned earlier. Things could change.

According to news reports last year McDonalds figures to spend about 1 Billion dollars to renovate their Canadian stores to the new McCafe look.

I would not be surprised to see KFC start doing their Winnipeg stores as some of them are starting to look a little stale dated.

Your KFCs are starting to look dated? The KFCs in Thunder Bay haven't been renovated in my lifetime. I don't even know what modern KFCs are supposed to look like.
