Is the soft, toxic ground under the viaducts the reason they can't be integrated into a tunnel system?

In San Francisco, east-west Geary Street goes through a long tunnel right in the downtown peninsula.

Montreal has both the Boulevard des Laurentides (the 401) going through the mountain, as well as a substantial part of Cote Ste. Catherine.

Sorry folks, but I still think an underground, N-S, E-W tunnel system would be a great solution.

$$$$$$ Yes. But we're worth it !!

(but most people in Vancouver hate tunnels anyway, it seems .....)

$100M price tag. Maybe if Vancouver had made a big profit off the Olympic Village they could afford it.

Yeah, I guess that's a big part of the reason. But when more and more Gateway traffic starts pouring into downtown, and through downtown, they're going to regret the lack of foresight and lack of infrastructure.

The Alaskan way viaduct replacement tunnel is going to be in the range of 2 Billion. $100M doesn't get you much of a tunnel.

In related news, the Mayor is now pushing for the Malkin Connector:

Mayor wants Malkin Connector proposal on table before viaducts decision
http://metronews.ca/news/vancouver/30906...posal-on-table-before-viaducts-decision/

This should be welcome news to residents of Strathcona.

Let me see if I've got this right ...

First: Tear down the viaducts because they are underused
Second: Build the Malkin Connector so trucks have an easier way to get from Clark Dr to Main St & Prior.

So now more trucks using the new Malkin Connector are rolling past the enlarged N.E. False Creek park, the new Elementary School & new condos to get downtown.

These same trucks now will need to use the new 5% grade Georgia Connector between BC Place and the Arena to get access to downtown.

I'm sure the people living in the new condos above Costco and the new renters around the Arena are gonna love hearing the sound of diesel engines as the trucks make their way up the new connector to Beatty St - only to get stopped at a red light. Then more engine revving to finish the ramp climb on to Georgia St.

This needs some more thought.

There is no intention to build the Malkin connector it is just a ploy to distract Strachoma residents as they are the biggest threat to this plan.

I wish I could get more involved but at this point I cant, but I will say that it will take decades to undue the damage. Like I have said the municipal politics are corrupt, the plan was to push this through at all costs, the fact Meggs has high level connections in Postmedia and especially Vancouver Sun and is the one pulling all the strings doesn't help. People still under estimate Meggs, he has more power then Robertson, he played a big role in getting Robertson in to his position and he has few morals. People still think he is some hippie when that is not the case.

The people can stop this at anypoint, just need quick spontaneous and drastic action.

At the end of the day I have no reason to do business in Vancouver and hopefully people wake up and more then 30% vote next time.

By the way guess who is benefiting from all of this the most?

Heh.. there is a kind of tragic humour to all this, I guess.

The City's original plan (after the original Halcrow plan didn't provide for destruction of the viaducts quickly enough) shows an increase in traffic along Prior and no mention is made of the Malkin connector.

When the Strathcona residents quite sensibly protest, the City indicates that what they meant to say was that traffic wouldn't increase, notwithstanding what was clearly indicated in the initial projections.

When that isn't convincing (and why would it be), the Mayor states that the Malkin connector has to be back on the table before proceeding with the viaducts. When was the last time Vision indicated any interest in the Malkin connector?

Does anyone really believe that the Malkin connector will be built anytime soon, much less prior to the destruction of the viaducts?

I thought this was funny - he's actually pretending to care!

Mayor Gregor Robertson said the ambitious project still has to meet the support of neighbouring residents as well as downtown businesses affected by the removal of the viaducts.

I'm glad to see the emphasis on the malkin connector, although i see it more important for improving rail traffic to the port, in conjunction with the powell overpass, rather than its car traffic effects.

I love how the the enlarged pie chart showing support for the plan has the supportive segment enlarged to 49% with the 43% pasted over. By the way it is virtually impossible to make a mistake like this using any of the software out there that generates pie charts.

Regardless this is a sales piece.

As has been said before their intention was never 15 years, it was to do this asap and these viaducts will be down before the end of this year if they have their way (3 years is not going to be their plan) and the Malkin connector is a ploy, there is zero intention to build it, its just empty words. Anyone who hasnt paid close attention can just use their common sense on this one.

I also wonder if they stuffed the comment box on top of this like they may have the viaduct competition (they apparently blocked by redirecting votes for the first option which was to leave them alone).

By the way that Vancouver Sun article is full of blatant lies and half truths, journalism at its worst with bias and no background checking of facts. For a good laugh you can read this other article which basically blasts the Strachona residents and makes them look like fools (talk about bias) http://www.vancouversun.com/Prior+Street+residents+plan+protest+against+traffic/6884577/story.html

"No mention" of the Malkin Connector in past documents, eh? "No interest". Really?

Halcrow: "New connection along Malkin Ave to Clark Drive and reclassification of Prior to Collector is possible."

June open house boards: "In the future, the new Pacific Boulevard is designed to connect to Malkin Avenue allowing an opportunity to downgrade Prior/ Venables to a local street."

June FAQ: "The new Pacific and widened section of Prior St from Main to Gore have been designed for an optimal connection with a future Malkin Connector which would have an overpass over the railyards and would ‘T’ into Clark at Charles Street (vehicles would be required to turn at Clark with no through connection). This would divert commuter vehicles and goods movement trucks away from Prior/Venables between Gore and Clark."

I can't wait until the day the city lays waste to these eyesores.
Do you live in Vancouver (metro)?
When have you last lived in Vancouver (metro)?
Have you ever lived in Vancouver (metro)?

These viaducts are important pieces of infrastructure and as such are there to be used and to improve mobility for the public, not to be works of art. There is zero justification for this.

I should mention that Jaroslav Dobrovolny has also become a major mouth piece for pushing this through, I have lost what little respect I might have had for him since his New West council days. Ever since his dad died and he moved over to Vancouver politics it has been downhill for him.

Yes it has been "mentioned", keeping the viaducts has also been "mentioned". The point of the matter is that when they say they will look at building the Malkin connector it is nothing but empty words as they are only saying what people want to hear. As for actually building it there is no effort or care, I think you can see that even now. Could it be built? Sure? Are they going to do anything to push this forward? No unless there is a vocal backlash against them.

You make my point.

Halcrow mentions it as something which should be done as part of its recommendations for a 20% capacity removal over 5 years or a 50% capacity removal over 5-10 years. Not fast enough for the City, I guess, as that timeline is quickly jettisoned.

Yeah.. the open house boards state that "In the future, the new Pacific Boulevard is designed to connect to Malkin Avenue allowing an opportunity to downgrade Prior / Venables to a local street", but you will look in vain for anything resembling a commitment or expression of intent to actually undertake any such work.

The June FAQ, issued as part of the effort to resile from the initial projections which indicated an increase of traffic on Prior, states as follows:

"The proposed street network allows for, and is consistent with, longer term objectives of traffic calming of Prior/Venables. The new Pacific and widened section of Prior St from Main to Gore have been designed for an optimal connection with a future Malkin Connector which would have an overpass over the railyards and would ‘T’ into Clark at Charles Street (vehicles would be
required to turn at Clark with no through connection). This would divert commuter vehicles and goods movement trucks away from Prior/Venables between Gore and Clark.

The Malkin Connector is a component of the grade separation strategy for the Burrard Inlet Rail line, to allow for an improved rail connection between the false creek flats railyards and Port operations on the South shore of Burrard Inlet. This strategy is supported by the federal government, Port Metro Vancouver, the City of Vancouver and rail operators; to support and
improve Vancouver’s role as a major Gateway to Pacific markets.

Work is needed to design this connection, including discussions with businesses, property owners, and the community to fully appreciate and mitigate potential issues from various perspectives. Staff have begun this work and will evolve it as part of the Eastern Core Strategy (False Creek Flats) which we intend to report to Council later this year.

We are also proposing sufficient right of way along new Pacific and the widened portion of Prior from Main to Gore, to accommodate a potential future relocation of the separated bike facility from Union/Adanac to Prior/Venables, allowing for a possible greenway on Venables."

Not sure how any of that would give any objective reader comfort that the Malkin connector will be built, but less built prior to destruction of the viaducts. (But.. hey.. doesn't really matter, as the new projections show a traffic reduction on Prior, I guess.)

I urge people to read these documents in their entirety, not just the bits quoted here. I think some others have also saved the City documents with the original projections for Prior as well.

This is what is coming...

Translink, please, please, please could you remove Georgia viaduct from MRN and while you are at it could you pay for the Malkin connector and the removal of the viaducts pretty please? You know, just the same way you paid for Vancouver's downtown tram?

I made no claim that there was ever an imminent commitment expressed, and I don't think there yet is one. I'm simply refuting your claim that this came out of thin air. There's a clear thread of interest going back years. Pulling the levers to pull ahead projects either in response to or in anticipation of public interest is what politicians do.
