We already have that: the destroyed residential streets like 1st and 12th that are monuments to the anti-freeway cabal's "success".

Shhhh, else Meggs will funnel all Grandview Hwy traffic onto Broadway and terminate 1st Ave. at Nanaimo and designate 1st and 12th Ave. west of Nanaimo as 30km/h bike routes.

Cool find!

Very sleek lines, which would also deff be relevant for an overpass today. In fact, the abutments almost look akin to an anvil.

Take away the forms and ... Ta da!

And now the view looking west from the east sidewalk of Main St, with the Georgia st. abutment finished and the Dunsmuir St. abutment still in forms. I can't tell if the concrete has been poured yet.

My long-held suspicion was that the dirt embankments between and around these Main St. abutments were put there to 'beautify' the area - to hide the rail yards to the west from drivers and pedestrians using Main St. This seems to be correct, since the caption for the 3rd photo is "Fill Placing".

Since it appears that the dirt mounds aren't needed for supporting the abutments nor the viaducts at Main St, the mounds could be removed to allow for a better connection between the NE False Creek redevelopments and Main St. It doesn't need to be a new roadway connection, but instead make it an easier connection for pedestrians and cyclists to get from Main St to get 'under the viaducts' and into the rest of NE False Creek.

Knowing Meggs, I'm sure he's already planning on doing that.

There is at least one community group coming together to oppose the Viaduct removal. Flyers are up in Strathcona, with a petition at at least one local shop. The opposition centers around the effect a Viaduct removal would potentially have on Prior.

That's encouraging and surprising. I think that when a protest comes from the community immediately impacted, rather than a more diffuse thing, it has more effect. At least I hope the Strathcona group will.

Surely the Malkin connector will solve any Prior problem:

In the future, the new Pacific Boulevard is designed to connect to Malkin Avenue allowing an opportunity to downgrade Prior/ Venables to a local street.

Then would it not make more sense to have the connector in place before anything is removed? (or even any major decisions made).

Again, there is a famous quote in GIS, all models are wrong, but some are useful. That is right data analysis and geographic information systems scientists (which I am only a few courses away from getting my full degree in) all willingly agree that models will always be incorrect.

So please, no one be fooled that their "traffic models" are the word of god.

Would it be of any use in clarifying th situation, to make a mock-up design and put it here, or on the roads fantasy thread? I simply say this because a graphic interpretation, accompanied by statistics, might be easier to understand that way.

http://www.vancouversun.com/business/rea...proves+Aquilini+three/6961948/story.html
Rogers Arena is set to welcome hundreds of new neighbours after Vancouver city council Thursday night approved the development of three new highrise towers by Aquilini Developments and Construction, run by the same family that owns the Canucks.

According to the $300-million plan, which originally favoured condos in the mixed-used development, a total of 614 one-, two-and three-bedroom rental units would be built in stages over the next several years with the last of the towers — between 23 and 32 storeys — completed in the spring of 2016.

You are aware these towers were going to be built regardless if the viaducts are torn down or not.

footprint will look interesting when the viaduct is gone, would be an excellent sloping greenway or even some sort of walkable green roof to a low- to mid-rise, a redo of the convention center jutting-style project. or even just a huge angled concrete canopy (with walkable green rood) under which sit a golden gai-style tangle of shops and stalls. it could be pretty amazing down there.

Just received an email in regards to the Viaducts study.

Quote:
In total, over 600 comment forms were returned indicating strong support for the overall concept as presented, with nearly 70% of all respondents either supporting or strongly supporting the idea.
Looks like the anti-removal majority here is not in-line with the feeling of the city. Not that four hundred some-odd people is a consensus...

Comment forms, eh? Those are always an accurate representation of citywide opinion.

OTOH, Vision handily won the last election and it was pretty clear by that point that Meggs was going to do away with the viaducts in pretty short order.

No kidding. The comments on that Vancouver Sun article are laughable. So much ranting and complaining... over what? Some empty odd-shaped pieces of land becoming rental condos? Oh the humanity!!

Fair enough... it's a trend though, and I've seen the same sentiment on other discussion forums. Of course, how the leaders of this project perceive the public response is a factor in how they proceed as well... so it does mean something. Also, when the public is being given the opportunity to express feelings towards plans through specific means, I imagine those means will be given weight... like it or not.

The long awaited staff presentation to council. No idea why it was only released after the meeting and not the week prior as is the standard. The item was closed to speakers as well. We'll have all summer to study it as council is off until the fall.
