I was talking to an engineer who is working on the project for CCW and an inside update would suggest the Vancouver firm who drew up the plans for the construction timeline forgot that the project is taking place in Winnipeg and not Vancouver.
Apparently the timeline was for 7 _________ to be poured in a certain period of time, and the crew is only capable of pouring 2 or less in that allotted time.
The source tells me that that the project is looking like it will be a year behind schedule if not more. The good thing is that apparently the construction company is footing the bill for it.

SNC-Lavalin......I find it hard to believe that there would be an error like that but, I do agree the bridge over the rail line (the bridge in the middle of no-where) looks to be significantly behind. The main pouring of the roadway won't likely occur till next spring. The interchange on the west Perimeter seems to be progressing well.

Marbles on Portage, Opening July 31
Save the Date!

A new public artwork, Marbles on Portage by Erica Swendrowski, will soon animate Portage Avenue.

Join us on July 31 at 12 noon at the Air Canada Window Park (Portage Avenue between Carlton Street and Hargrave Street) to celebrate these unique and beautiful works of art that will be brightening this major thoroughfare.

About Marbles on Portage
The artist sought to create a unique, playful atmosphere within Winnipeg’s historic downtown by installing 20 larger-than-life marble sculptures in planters and in the median on Portage Avenue. The 3’ and 4’6” marbles captivate the imagination of young and old alike and reveal how familiar everyday items can make life extraordinary. While staying true to the unique design of glass marbles, the sculptures incorporate soft glowing light as well as living plants. The diverse elements will create an atmosphere of imaginative possibilities day and night throughout all four seasons.

I left what they were pouring blank because I don't remember exactly what it was that he said that was taking much longer than the original plans were. My guess is the pouring of the concrete piles (whatever the correct term may be). It was over a week ago that he told me, and it isn't fresh in my mind. What is still very fresh is that he was very frustrated at how much longer the process is taking than anticipated. It has something to do with pouring concrete and rebar as his role has something to do with overseeing anything rebar. So whatever engineer role that may be, I'm sure someone on here can come up with the appropriate title.

I think there is some delay in the earthworks as well. Hugh Munro was the subcontractor to SNC and they sent alot of resources over the past 15 months to assist with the flood. (Digging the channel from lake manitoba - dauphin river? to lake winnipeg)

The suburbia part, you mean? Definitely agree there. The urban sprawl in Calgary is ridiculous. Same with Edmonton. At least Edmontons bus system is better built, along with being a littlee more dense than Calgary. However, both cities do have alot of greenspace. Look at Fish Creek Provincial Park, or the Edmonton valley...

Unless we get RT funding and a less-retarded mayor/PC premier, we won't surpass them at all within even 10-15 years. However, we are still making progress compared to 1999...

I think downtown Winnipeg needs more art. Every time I am in Chicago I am always impressed on how the art around downtown improves the experience. I like the same thing in Victoria an Vancouver, along with more plant landscaping. I know we are challenged with our weather here but I feel we could use a lot more.

My thoughts exactly. This goes right back to what I was saying about wasting money on things that aren't needed when we could simply give ourselves basic beauty.

Other than Elms, are there any plant species that could survive the cold weather year round? The tropical plants look pretty decent. Half Empty is a great addition in my mind. Actually the entire plaza looks great. Hopefully the reconstruction on Fort turns out well.

Evergreens are the only thing that I can think of that would be able to survive our winters and look good year round. But how would they survive in an urban environment? And how would they look in an urban environment?

There are literally hundreds of tree species that thrive in Winnipeg.

Where do you get the impression that only elms and conifers can grow here?

The problem with busy urban centers like Portage and Main is that the taller buildings shade the street and the lack of good soil in the area really limits/hinders the growth of any trees planted.

Trees need lots of sun, deep soil and water. Downtown areas lack in all three.

Well as long as they don't put those fake plants like they have on portage by Polo Park.

But art is what it is...its not exactly dollar store type of stuff if you want it done by professionals

plus what exactly would qualify as basic beauty? something like this could end up qualifying as such. Art adds to city feel, city vibe, and reduces the bland and boring factor. Winnipeg could use more art, you can't go wrong with it unless it sucks (and for the record I have not seen what this artwork will be like, so I don't know how good or bad it will be...but I am open to the idea)

Further, art will always have a higher up-front cost...but once that cost is paid, its paid. It doesn't (always) need regular maintenance like trees or other types of plants such as flowers where city worker fees are also involved in maintenance. I like greenery a lot, but it has its place. Its not going to be suited for every single area of the city, and Portage is a busy road with many intersections and turning junctions and whatnot. Putting certain types of greenery there would just not work the same way art would.

If done correctly, art can have a huge impact, and is another way to beautify something that lacks it.

You can't plant conifers along busy sidewalks. They crowd people out, unless you trim the bottom 10 feet of them, but even then they're annoying and look stupid. They're also slow growing, and their conical shape means they'll never form a canopy or cast meaningful shade.

You can't stick a cones of plant with 12 foot bases along downtown streets. It just doesn't work.

Maple is a pretty good tree. Thunder Bay uses Hackberry on a few streets but they have big leaves so young trees look really stupid.

I did landscaping for 14 years, and there are few tree's that can be planted downtown on the main routes, this is due to SALT. Elms and Maples and Ashes do good, the rest do very poorly.

We had also tried about 100 15 foot Spruce down Portage allready, when Mayor Suzy T was in office, and remember after one winter they were all brown on the street side due to salt spray.

Now planting other trees say in the parts of the exchange that are not planted, you can go with just about anything as the Salt spray is not that large. Spruce though need to be at least 10 feet back from the street curb to be succesful.

Elms will always win though, they are extremly long lived, fast growing, form a wonderful canopy and take salt and poor soil conditions with stride. The Siberian ones you see on the center of portage do not do so well though. But they do not get Dutch Elm. But on the Dutch Elm issue, they do have a cure for it now, but the city is too poor to immunize all the tree's. All they care about is what is around the Leg.

And the second biggest killer of trees is people at night breaking new ones or idiot drivers taking them out. Here is where we need to put some thought into how to protect them till they are mature enough to withstand cars and people.
