That's interesting cuz the restaurant you mention once had a sign whose faded outlines can still be seen on the 1st floor of that bldg. It seemed to take up a fairly large amt of space. interesting too cuz there's now another italian restaurant across the street, colori, which serves much better food. But it's in such a tiny space I imagine if it weren't for good word of mouth about it, most ppl wouldn't know it even existed.

your giving a name to the bldg at 8th & olive made me do some legwork about it....til now I didn't even give the location much thought.
I recall using the parking structure south of it several yrs ago. that was when the coulter mandel bldg still was a

mess & had rags hanging in its windows. colori is in the small 3 story pinkish colored bldg way over on the left, & a new apt tower that's supposed to be built by a company based in vancouver will go up next to the bldg way over on the right, with the "washington mutual" sign.....which now is "chase"....on its roof.

I googled info on it & found this article in downtownlanews.com from early 2010 about the '10 worst eyesores in dtla'.....

COMMERCIAL EXCHANGE BUILDING
Location: 416 W. Eighth St.
Eyesore Factor: This shuttered, 13-story property at the southwest corner of Eighth and Olive streets occupies a key location on the border of the Fashion District and South Park. It stands across the street from the Bristol Hotel, which is currently being renovated, and businesses including the Italian restaurant Colori Kitchen and the Golden Gopher bar. The building, designed by prominent architects Walker and Eisen, has been owned for more than eight years by the Kianmahd family and its partners, according to title documents. Previous renovation plans were thwarted by infighting among partners and later, the economy, said co-owner Bruce Kianmahd.
What’s Next?: There are no current development plans for the building, said Kianmahd. The ownership group may sell the property or explore redevelopment options once the economy improves.

It will be interesting how current businesses like the colori restaurant to the south, bottega louie to the north will be affected by the devlpt of the large parking lot-----for the angelena proj-----catercorner to the commercial exchange bldg, much less if the 32 story apt bldg really does break ground....
the clock is ticking.....

The so-far-unnamed 283-unit tower is currently in the plan check phase of the permitting process and is on pace to break ground by August, said Chris Evans, Onni’s executive vice president. He said financing is in place to start construction, but declined to specify how the firm will fund the project.
