I know more "real authority" lies with the Georgia State Assembly than other state legislatures. In what ways can Assembly members influence development in their district using the powers granted to them by their office? District 57 contains the Gulch, Midtown Mile, current project 77 12th, current Capitol project, proposed Viewpoint II etc...

Today Viewpoint reinforced the entrance from each stair well, on each floor. If other buildings are doing that too, the zombies are on the way

My wife and I will be voting for SPLOST with enthusiasm, and so will most people in my area. My view is that the proposed tax is (1) reasonable, (2) targeted to important local needs, and (3) neither permanent nor easily repurposed to a politically-oriented slushfund operated by people I don't agree with.

So that's a data point for you. Also, I've been to RA with my wife and we do support in-town restaurants etc. Empire State South is a particular favorite.
that's great RDS - thanks for sharing that.

3 conceptual drawings for Gulch redevelopment

The ideas will be discussed at a 6 p.m. meeting Wednesday at the Atlanta Department of Watershed at 72 Marietta St.

No. There's no funding for any of this stuff. The DOT is trying to use the Public/Private Partnership (3P) contract arrangement to develop this. I believe they want to leverage the development potential of the area to build the multi-modal terminal. It remains to be seen if the dollars will work out to make it viable. If it goes forward it could be a game changer for downtown. First and formost it will do something about the giant hole that is the gulch and remove a huge obstacle to unifying downtown.

Secondly, it will bring together MARTA rail, streetcars, GRTA bus, Suburban Bus, Greyhound, Taxi, and (if it ever moves forward) regional commuter rail. The connectivity that would enable could also be pretty revolutionary for Atlanta.

Alas, after years of studies, I'm not sure I can hold my breath long enough to see this happen. But, the DOT is behind this, so who knows.

Yeah, the fact that it is on their punch list is pretty good and I love that all three would involve replacing the scary north side of the Spring St viaduct! I like the 2nd one best

131 Ponce de Leon

The first renderings of 131 Ponce de Leon have surfaced.

The article also discusses the Georgia Proton Therapy Center (corner of Peachtree and North). In both cases the DRC recommended a return in August with plans that included “more interaction with the street.” So that's promising. Even though both are structures are only 3 - 5 stories tall. Harumph.

Like the Roswell guy who had promising comments, here you are from down in Newnan (neighbor to a city run by the most anti-Atlanta, anti-transit mayor in the region), and you are on top of the Gulch redevelopment. Thanks for the info and the hope for those of us in the middle of Atlanta that there are people on the fringes who are interested in the progress of the central city.

Mims Park project moves forward.

An Atlanta City Council committee today OK'ed consolidating parcels owned by the city and Invest Atlanta, the city's economic development arm, and executing a 50-year lease with the nonprofit organization that wants to build, operate, and maintain the park that would span three city blocks on the edge of Vine City. The proposal now awaits the approval of the full City Council and Mayor Kasim Reed.

The 16 acre park is the brainchild of architect Rodney Mims Cook and his nonprofit National Monuments Foundation, perhaps best known in Atlanta as the folks responsible for the Millenium Gate in Atlantic Station. The scope and scale of the park evokes some of the grand city parks of Europe, and would honor important Atlanta historical figures, including many civil rights leaders.

If I have my bearings correct, that would be Ponce heading to the left and Juniper heading right. If that's the case, they've lopped off about 2/3 of the Pei building! Is a small piece of Pei better than no Pei?

Those eye brow things are so offensive. It would look better if they just scrapped them and went with clean lines. Maybe they are trying to be contextual in using them, as the apartments behind Publix have them, but I would consider that a contextualism NOT worth respecting.

In any case, this will be a great addition to that area. It needs more housing.
