I admit we have seen a lot of Mount Royal shots in this thread. I guess it won't be too long until we see for the millionth time that shot taken from a plane above le 1000. I'd like to see a different angle too but the problem with this city is the fact that downtown is stuck between a river and a mountain, which allows for few vantage points, at least from a certain distance.

I managed to get a skyline shot from A-19 (just across the bridge to Laval) last week but we can barely see it.

Yupp, you just don't notice because the negative sticks out more than the positive. Nobody is allowed to say anything bad about the sacred city of Montreal so when someone does it seems like an atrocity.

And they are awful. If either of them were in Toronto they'd be in the "ugly Canada" thread for sure.

I.M. Pei also designed Kips Bay Plaza, the Society Hill Towers, the MIT Green Building and the John Hancock Tower. Every good architect lays an egg every once in a while.

I don't think anyone here denies that Montreal has ugly buildings. It is really dominating the ugly Canada thread (thanks especially to Longueuil). The Tour CIBC or PVM aren't really what come to mind when someone mentions ugly buildings in Montreal though.

I think the Tour CIBC's problem is that photos of it rarely do it much justice (the two previous shots posted of it aren't great).

I'll give you the CIBC tower, it does look good from certain angles. I find the further away you are the worse it looks but up close it grows on you.
However, i always hated looking and working at PVM when i lived in Montreal. But i'll admit that it does have many fans. Too each their own.

I don't see how anyone can take issue with the CIBC Tower - pretty simple, unspectacular modernist design. Unless you happen to hate everything of that sort, of course. PVM does seem to have a love-it-or-hate-it thing going on though. But its something that really needs to be seen in full to be able to appreciate the form and immensity, no single angle can do that. The detailing is great by any measure though.

Fixed it for you. You're pretty much spot on about CIBC. From afar it's just another box. Up close, you can see the vertical fins shining with all the details put into the cladding. I'll search google for a better pic.

That just reflects the fact that Montreal has lots of stuff from the 60's and 70's.

Lots of ugly buildings went up during that period but I think the architecture from that period is nevertheless underappreciated. Lots of people will call any concrete building ugly but fawn over stucco and foam faux-Victorian schlock.

I think Tour CIBC looks great. It has nice detailing and proportions.

The bow would look fantastic in Montreal. The diagrid (diamond shapes) and glazing would fit right into your colour scheme.
