Have always liked the Wedbush bldg..........because its architecturally different from the rest of DT's bldgs.......not necessarily because its iconic.

What is Towne.......a restaurant?

Towne is a new restaraunt at the ground floor of The Watermake (where that cool glass collection used to be). It's supposed to be South Park's answer to Bottega Louie.

Didn't the furniture store move to somewhere in the Historic Core?

Well then, i'm back from my vacation in Hollywood and boy can I say I had the best time. I stayed in the Loew's hotel right up the street from Hollywood Blvd. I stayed on the 20th floor and it had the best view I had ever seen! It showed all of what made up Los Angeles. Downtown, Chinatown, Hollywood, Century city, Wilshire, and Santa Monica. Here are my shots and where I stayed.

And here is the Loew's

It's a fantastic 21 story hotel, I HIGHLY suggest going there if you're coming to LA. It's just a block from Hollywood Blvd, and it's right behind the Chinese theatre.

My friend called a friend of his and got us into the Magic Castle, it's a very enjoyable place to eat. It has great entertainment as well!

And here's my last picture before leaving town. Taken from the magic castle, with the Lowe's tower to the left.

Nothing to do with development of downtown LA. Nice pictures though.

Yes and no. The cityscape pictures definitely show the product of development and I think everyone is enjoying them so I say let's bend the rules a little this time. They're more like guidelines anyway

Anybody know why there is scaffolding on the building that houses Bank of America, 7-11, Cigar Club and Wokcano on 7th between Figueroa and Flower?

In my ventures through the city, I noticed a bit of development all throughout the city. I did a few drive by's on the new marriot, nothing new aside from seeing the base of the crane. I saw a bit of construction near Hollywood blvd, was it the cheesecake factory site? What was most notable was the development along Hollywood blvd. They are added a ton of new advertisement signs that give it that time square feeling. A few buildings have tarps over them for apparently a new design. The most notable was the Disney show building right across the street from the mall, can anyone look into this? The Roosevelt building is fixing it's sign as well.

Wood Partners Announces Plans to Build an All-Glass Luxury High Rise Multifamily Project in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/06/12 -- Plans for a luxury, glass high-rise apartment project in downtown Los Angeles -- shelved during the 2008 economic downturn -- are on the front burner again as high demand and low construction costs make multifamily housing attractive to investors and developers.

Wood Partners, the nation's leading builder of multifamily housing, expects to break ground on the 22-story, 290-unit project in the South Park district at 801 S. Hope St. in September, with leasing to start in the summer of 2014.

"Downtown LA is seeing significant investment activity," said Brian Hansen, Wood Partners' director of development for Southern California. "That's why our timing on Hope Street is perfect. Because we started in 2007 and now have full construction drawings, we'll be among the first projects out of the gate, and one of the first post-recession high-rises located in downtown."

The .7 acre yet-to-be named complex was purchased by Wood Partners back in 2008. The project will be modeled after Glass House Dallas, the developer's popular 375-unit luxury apartment community in Texas, and its 393-unit high-rise condo project, Glass House Denver.

The one-and two-bedroom units will consist of floor-to-ceiling glass, and will incorporate the most popular floor plans of Wood Partners' many existing high rise multifamily residential communities across the country.

The Hope Street high-rise will offer an impressive amenity package, and each unit will include an expansive balcony and high-end interior finishes.

Also included is an approximate 10,000 square foot elevated pool deck with thoughtfully designed clubroom with retractable glass walls that lead out to the oversized pool, outdoor social/dining area, spa, fire pit and garden retreat. Additionally, a roof top deck overlooking the Staples Center and LA Live to the southwest and the high rise buildings of the Central Business District to the north will provide additional outdoor gathering/event option for residents.

Parking will be on six levels, two of them underground, with 5,000 square feet of retail space on the street level.

that is one of the many gaps in the hood that is easy to forget about, or not realize is there, til you're actually in dt. It's then that a person realizes just how many spots still need to be filled in & cleaned up. that's why I when some ppl worry that if one proj isn't tall enough or good enough, that there won't be any opportunity in the future to do something bigger & better. we should be so lucky.

Good news that something is going into 8th and Hope. I'm a bit concerned that all the renderings for it look like they were made in the late 80s...here's the one Curbed posted today:

5,000 sq ft of ground floor retail? Isn't that extraordinarily small for a building of that size?

Your argument justifies strip malls. When enough people feel that way, you will get them. I suspect that even you must have some standards?

Glass House in Denver is pretty nice. Nothing to write home about, but it's a clean, modern glass high-rise with massing much the same as this one. Though the curve on the 8th street side is a bit 80's, if you ask me. But materials-wise, this one should be fairly nice.

And ziggy, yes, 5,000 sq. ft. of retail does seem pretty small to me. This lot size can easily handle 10,000 - 12,000 sq. ft. of retail, along with the building lobby, ingress and egress for parking, as well as loading for trucks and what not. I'm guessing much of that ground floor space is taken up between separate ramps for below grade and above grade parking. Still, the lot is something like 62,000 sq. ft. I'm hoping that 5,000 sq. ft. figure is a typo.

In any case, it's good to see one of the projects from the boom get a new lease on life, even if it is only 22 stories. Here's hoping this is a shot in the arm for reviving Park Tower across the street.

Finally the area immediately around my apartment is getting the attention it deserves. the blocks bound by 7th - Olympic and Flower to Olive tie several different districts together and are just ripe for development. Ive always pictures 8th street as a great condo canyon with a mix of old and new and its coming together nicely.

Angelina breaks ground in August
8th and Hope in Septemner
Embassy hotel is under construction
9th and Olive (33 story) breaks ground in August.

Its gonna be fun times. Its only a matter of time before the other lots are gone. couldnt be happier (except that i wish that the 8th and hope tower had no ass hat, was a bit taller and had 15,000 square feet of retail, but i digress)

I'd just like to say, a couple months ago I predicted that iHope would break ground this year. Waddup! Anyways, for those who say the architecture is dated and looks like its from the 80s, that's just because the rendering was done in marker. If you look at the older rendering, you'll see that the building is actually exactly the same.

Sure, the design isn't brilliant, but it isn't bad. Just safe. And you know what I always say- safe is better then ugly!

And concerning the amount of retail, I'm sort of happy. If there is only 5,000 square feet, then it will be mostly smaller, local stores, and not big chain stores, which, IMO, is a good thing.

In other news....

Kitchen Table has opened up on the OBD. So, someone check that out, since I am out of town and can't.

Also, preliminary renderings have been released for the regional connector. Not bad, not great. It's metro, what do you expect?

EDIT: CAHSR passed! Yay!
