Did anyone shop there when the business "Eclectic" and a few others were there...? That was an interesting and fun little shop.

I believe that is where the new gas station for Smith's is going to be.

New population estimates were just released, and Salt Lake City grew by 3,459 residents from the 2010 census to July 1, 2011. That is a 1.9% growth rate, and puts Salt Lake at the biggest population it has ever been 189,899. According to Wikipedia the census numbers peaked in 1960 at 189,454. If we keep growing like this, we may even be able to hit 200,000 by the end of the decade.

That is good news, thanks for sharing. I did a quick calculation, at 1.9% yearly growth rate we would hit 200,930 by 2014 and 220,758 by 2019.

I had some time on my hands recently, and was thinking about all the recent development, current construction, and future development in Salt Lake City; and made a google map which shows where that development has, is, and will take place. I know there are a lot of developments missing on the map, but if you want to take a look, and PM me any additions, I wouldn't mind keeping it up to date.

It is easier to see the shaded areas if you change to map view rather than satellite view (in the upper right hand corner). I have color coded the developments into a few categories: residential condo, residential apartment, retail, office, government, cultural, and other.

Here is the link: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203...753629,-111.869144&spn=0.092457,0.173206

I posted about that on the last page. That is the former Bill and Nayda's Cafe location (I guess I should have posted an adress). Kroger owns the property and is building a new Smiths Express gas station.

Such a waste of a parcel with so much development potential. That would be a perfect location for a 3 -4 story mixed use, retail/office on the ground floor and residential on the upper floors, development. It could have been a great addition to the Trolley Square neighborhood, and would created more built in patrons to Trolley.

Oh well. Smith's had the money and the zonig allowed it.

So we've very likely crossed 190,000 already. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that growth rate exceeds 2% as the economy continues to rebound.

Finally!! It only took 50 YEARS to catch up to where we were in 1960! Dang suburban sprawl!! Really hurt us for awhile!

Thanks for the update! Is there a link to the population facts? Can we update the wikipedia page with the new 2012 pop figures?

It was in a Tribune Article this morning: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/54388259-78/growth-utah-county-lake.html.csp

I think Wikipedia usually updates the population numbers on cities when new census numbers come out every ten years.

I have seen some census data that's not based off the 10 year census numbers. There are times that you will see 2006, 2009 and anywhere in between. I am pretty sure that if you give them the information for the 2012 they will update salt lakes population to the current numbers.

That is right. I have seen that also.

We can count ourselves lucky in some respects. Many cities, especially rust belt cities lost over half there population, Cleveland for instance was nearly 1 million people in the 60's, that number as of a few years ago was around 450,000.

if it were up to me Bill and Nayda's would still be there. I seem to recall some controversy over the whole thing... Then they end up just leaving an abandoned lot there for so many years...

186,440 total in 2010
3,459 added in 2011

Total 189,899 end of 2011 so assuming if SLC has added at least 101 people during these last six months ( most likely ) then yes SLC should be pass 190,000 by now. Awesome.

Census is every 10 years, and they do 'estimates' every year in between. So it's not exact, but is usually relatively close. The latest numbers have Utah County growing like crazy.
