That's likely the space for a concrete median to be constructed in.

The bridge deck has been built 6 lanes wide - it has space for 3 + 2 + extra barrier + extra shoulders, which is 6 lanes without barriers.

In 30 years I expect to see C/D barriers removed or minimized to make space for the 6th lane in each direction.

go_leafs is probably right - that extra line is where they will put the eastbound C/D barrier after the full bridge deck is finally completed in 2013.

Hmm, that looks awfully similar to what the bridge is going to look like it with it's final alignment. It looks like half of the 2-3-3-2 lane configuration.

It could be possible they're going to run the bridge in the final alignment with only part of it open to avoid having to grind out temporary lines on a brand new bridge deck.

It could be initially 2 Eastbound, Divider, 3 Westbound.

Then once they don't need as much room for construction on the east side of the bridge deck it could be opened as 2 East bound, Divider, 2 East bound, Temp. Divider, 1 West Bound, Divider, 3 East bound. That would give an 8 land cross section while only requiring jersey barriers for demarcation on the new road surface.

It would be nice if there was a webcam pointed at the centre of the new bridge so we could see how close they are to 'bridging' the gap. They must be pretty darn close as they have installed all of the cables to the main towers now. At least there is no more holes on the towers to install any more.

I drove by yesterday, the gap is small enough that you could jump across without issues. I would be thinking that the gov't would be having some sort of big photo-op shortly announcing the bridge being joined.

Along with dedication of the Gorden M. Campbell bridge? Or maybe they'll save that for opening day Nothing like bringing back the old tradition of naming stuff named after politicians.
(j/k)

Its exciting seeing them marking what appears to be final lane alignments so relatively early to completion of the project. I guess yes, the temporary 8-lane configuration will be within this. Am looking forward to visiting this christmas. (or maybe sooner).

Part of me actually wonders if the bridge is going to open up with 5 lanes eastbound and 2 lanes westbound.

The reason being, Highway 1 through Surrey is 90-95% complete, and can likely handle traffic coming from Coquitlam and Burnaby on those 5 new lanes.

Now, head westbound, over from Surrey/Langley, and there are parts of the Highway that are 30-40% complete. Keeping those 2 lanes into Burnaby would help reduce the traffic impact of suddenly funnelling 3 new lanes onto the existing infrastructure (which won't be finished until the bridge is opened).

And scrap that, those markings on the bridge deck look like they're meant for paving only. Take a look at a live shot:

There are probably Gateway project managers on this forum right having fun and messing with us.

It makes sense to keep the paving seams at the road lines.

And they can use those American style bumps for temporary road lines like they did for the two right lanes eastbound towards 152nd St. offramp so no grinding will be required.

Looks like they're ready to realign Hwy 1 between Exit 44 and Cape Horn overpass. Westbound lanes shift north tonight.

That's an awesome shot! The current Port Mann looks so small by comparison.

I assume this means the north approach is fully connected as well? I haven't heard a lot about it since they dropped the section.
