Today's WSJ has a writeup on downtown apartment construction coming back to life-

http://blogs.wsj.com/developments/2012/06/19/apartment-construction-stars-again-in-downtown-l-a/

Included is this new render of the Related Cos Grand Ave project phase 2 apartment building-

Also, need some help in the L.A. Metro forum with some interesting renders of 10000 Santa Monica Blvd that are off a flash player website.

I know people are going to dripe about it's (boring) design but I quite like it. It fits in well with Bunker Hill's understated buildings.

I remember talks about the towers before that render. One was to be 19 floors, does anyone remember the number of floors for the other?

It's very cliche to want a project to be taller, but this is one tower that I definitely wish was much taller. The northern end of Bunker Hill already has plenty of 10-20 story buildings. A taller structure (30-40 floors?) would have extended the skyline beyond Cal 2 and Wells Fargo.

I think the tallest new tower in DTLA should be reserved for Wilshire Grand. The intersection of 7th and Fig deserves a big tower 'cause its actually an important node for downtown, unlike this stretch of Grand..which just seems to lack in foot traffic and activity in contrast to 7th/Fig.

Nice, It's clean and simple. It's a companion for the Broad without competing with it. All too often these multi-model Starchitect developments start to lose there gravitas by replicatiting the same type of design element in what was originally designed to be a unique structure. A couple examples of this would be the Frank Gehry designed mixed use proposed across from Disney and the Daniel Liebeskind designed condos adjacent to the Denver Art Musem.

In the future the Grand Avenue Site will be within a few blocks of numerous portals to the red/purple lines and the future downtown connector. The civic centers south portal will be almost directly under it. If you ask me, it won't be long before the only logical choice for the grand ave site is development similar to Fig@7th (still can't get used to that), the grand ave project, or LA Live.

still better than before tho at least.

All the staircases i have no problem with.. i actually love how LA has so many of these.... its like a city of urban staircases... i know a lot of the historic stairs on hills have been destroyed to make room for the Bunker Hill development =/

I agree... when i look at downtown.. it looks as if there is a invisible "no skyscraper barrier" north of bunker hill... it looks like development just stops right there where cal and wellsfargo plaza are at.... adding 20-40 story towers north of bunker hill will indeed make the area feel more a part of the city rather than "oh look i think i left downtown" when you leave bunker hill

soooo i didn't even know Downtown Los Angeles had a world trade center -__-''

Its so small though compared to NYC's WTC.... what do you guys think? Do you think DTLA should build a taller one? perhaps a twin tower to NYC's?? lol they could be called the "Twin Towers" in honor of the former twin towers.. One with a spire and one without.. just like the original twin towers ... idk..just a silly thought

Is this a plan for a new tallest building along the 101 or is it just part of the 101 park render and not a serious project?

This is why I really wish Cal Plaza 3 was built. It would've brought the skyline right down the hill to the Historic Core.

The one and only rendering I have found that shows Cal Plaza 3.

Grand Ave Project and 101 cap would be the two situations where the DTLA skyline could conceivably be extended north. Other than that though, that's it. With that said though, extension of the skyline all the way to El Pueblo would represent a massive amount of growth.

Totally disagree. That one small patch of park is seemingly 50% concrete. It needs to be more like 90% grass with maybe 10% concrete.

Which three Los Angeles Street buildings? I bike down that street several times a week, but I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary. However, yesterday, from the rooftop of my friend's PE loft, we both did comment how the space on the SE corner of the Los Angeles St./7th St. intersection would lend itself nicely as a restaurant. And the UFO building (I call it that because of its extensive telecommunications suite) across the street would make for a great condo conversion.

The King Edward, Baltimore and Leland Hotels on 5th and Los Angeles. The owner also brought back the Bristol Hotel next to the Golden Gopher. The King Eddy bar is also being restored by the owners of the Spring St. Bar. Here is the Downtown News article:

I think this was one of several student projects for what a 101 cap park would look like. The sillier versions included the "tallest building west of Chicago" as a gateway along the 101 and other dubious ideas for energy generation, deployable blinds, ecological plantings and hydration, museums, etc.

It will be interesting to see how these concepts juxtapose with the new Civic Center Park, which was hurriedly built so as to "create jobs" and with little focus on actual use, and with the Union Station plan, which could very well succumb to the same pressures.
