It became so popular that it quickly spread across North America. That is why Winnipeg and Chicago have a whole bunch of the "test communities" like Wildwood. For those of you who dont know, Wildwood is the one with no roads in the front and only back lanes.......I think. Chicago has a bunch of these test communities as well.
I'm not familiar with the area but what makes it a backlane? Wouldn't that be akin to modern suburbia with only one street in the front and nothing in the back? What I mean is if theres a lane there why is that considered the back rather than the front?

I always get Hardee's and Harvey's mixed up. You could probably add Arby's to that mix too

The lanes are quite narrow and basically every house has a garage right up against the lane. When you look at the houses they are clearly situated with the back doors facing the lane and the front or nicer side of the house faces the community sidewalk which creates quite a beautiful park-like setting. I have always loved these areas, Wildwood and Norwood Flats.

As Biff said, the "street" is just a little bay with garages on it. The fronts of the houses face into a forested park with a small walkway where the street would be. It looks completely different than any other type of suburban plan. While the houses were fairly simple postwar houses (nice ones but nothing very big), the area is now very sought after.

^There are small pockets of this type of housing in a few other areas of the city too, including St. B and south St. Vital...

wildwood is a 'radburn' layout....named after radburn, new jersey.....the owner of Bird construction flew over radburn on his way to new york and decided that he would do the same on the land he owned in winnipeg.

Guys, its the banned lboy/tupac_shakur. You can tell just by his related usernames, and constant questions about the same places 1001 times, ignoring the discussion. There is a reason I'm pointing this out. He got banned for a reason (calling Winnipegger@Heart a "fucking faggot") yet he's back.

Plus he did forget all article rules, so if let's say... The Winnipeg Sun read his post and saw that it was the same as their published work, he'd get in huge shit. Gotta point these things out.

Anyways, done talking about this, back to construction. Westport buildings having slow progress and the Headingley hotel has windows up now.

They park downtown and also near parks in the Beltline. Id like to see Vancouver or Winnipeg or Edmonton at lunch as well to see how things look.
Check out Broadway between Main and Vaughn at lunch it has been food truck and cart jammed forever. Now with shows like Eat St. I'm sure more creative entries are on the way as popular local restaurants go mobile.

Nothing really that good on Broadway.

Still stuck with the stupid bylaw in this province banning uncooked food on food trucks.

That has got to go. I heard an interview from the operator of the Taco Truck on CBC a while ago, and the amount of regulatory red tape he has to go through is ridiculous. I can understand the concern for public safety, but come on, I think an individual can make a self-determination whether they want to eat from a particular vendor, or not.

Another question: What is happening with the demolition beside the High Tea Bakery on Portage? Making a parking lot for the Bakery?

True and you're right about the bylaw, imagine what it could be with the amazing restaurants we have here.

Interesting, as I feel like vid and trueviking were only talking about this a few pages back...

The report suggested the city look at redeveloping some surface lots and require other owners to spruce up their act by setting standards for landscaping, lighting and signage.
Katz said he would like to see an incentive program move ahead as soon as possible, noting the ideal would be to eradicate surface parking lots downtown. He said it's difficult to get private owners to take a risk and redevelop surface lots, particularly if they live out of town and don't want to give up the steady revenue.
"If you've been a property owner in the downtown there's a good chance you've owned a surface parking lot," Katz said.
Coun. Jenny Gerbasi (Fort Rouge) said there is little motivation for owners to redevelop surface parking lots since they are cheap to own and make money. She said incentives might not be enough to spur development, and Winnipeg should consider reviewing its tax structure to see if there's a way to make it a disincentive to own a surface parking lot.
Gerbasi said it costs less for companies to build a big-box store that eats up space and creates acres of surface parking than to initiate a highrise infill development. She said city council needs to devise a plan that encourages the kind of development the city wants and needs.
"Everyone says we have too many (surface lots), so we have to do something that's effective," Gerbasi said.

Regarding the shopping malls, I remember hearing years ago that the Woolworth's store at Portage and Donald paid more reality tax than the entire ST. Vital mall did.

If that type of lopsided tax is still true why would anybody want to get rid of their parking lot and put up a building.

wow, that's messed up. Also how come Californian companies own parking lots in Winnipeg? Of course they would care little about redeveloping them... I agree with Gerbasi that parking lots should just be taxed more. Are they taxed on revenues or on size or what? I am not on expert on this... Shouldn't real estates be taxed on revenues rather than on what is built on them? But i guess that's hard since in some cases buildings are not rented out so it's hard to determine their revenue.

Developer refuses to give up on new residential complex

THE owner of Sandhu Developments says he hasn't given up on the idea of building a new residential complex at the northern end of the city's west Exchange District.

Karampaul Sandhu said in an interview he still hopes to build a six-storey, 60-unit condominium development on a vacant lot CentreVenture Development Corp. owns on the southeast corner of Princess Street and Logan Avenue.
