The only pictures I have ever seen of the DRIC bridge on many sites is this one.

Went for a little walk downtown today.

A few pics from the cell phone.

Booster Juice is open. Instead of an awning (like the other 2 on the building), they have their Booster Juice sign.

The Palace/Windsor Star renovation. Ouellette Ave. is gridlock between Park and University with the large crane in the road.

I've seen that design in the renderings too, but a few years ago they showed two designs, that one and one that looked like the Ambassador Bridge. They said that it was between those two designs, but I haven't heard for sure which design they were going to go with. I don't want to jump to conclusions just because they show that design in some renderings. Hopefully they come out soon and show the final choice.

I don't think a second bridge that looks identical would be my first choice. I'd rather see a bridge with a difference architectural design than the Ambassador Bridge so as to add some variety in the landscape to this region.

The future of The Barn is unclear. It seems there are issues regarding parking. Courtesy of CTV.

I saw that yesterday on the news, I was just happy to hear that this proposal was still alive. I thought for sure that it was doomed due to the lack of info the last couple months. Let's hope they work everything out and get construction started soon!

Plans are in the works for a full repair of Ottawa Street. As we told you last week, the City of Windsor was looking to spend only $500,000 to repave and repair a small stretch of Ottawa Street from Windermere to Gladstone.

Administrators at the Ottawa Street Business Improvement Area however were hoping the City would recommend spending an amount of more than $1 million to completely redo a larger section of the street in one shot.

At the City of Windsor’s Capital Budget Meeting held Monday night at City Hall, Ottawa Street BIA director Arnie Blaine spoke to Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis and city councillors and described the conditions on Ottawa Street.

“The street has not been repaved since 1983,” said Blaine, “that’s 29 years ago.”

“The crosswalks have become a trip hazard as they have deteriorated over the decades.” Blaine pointed out that Erie Street has been repaved twice over the last 15 years, that millions were spent on Downtown, Wyandotte Street East, a pool, an arena and other projects and asked, “when did we become the unwanted neighbour?”

Recognizing the importance of repairing the roadway in the vibrant Ottawa Street community, Mayor Francis remarked to Blaine “you should go and buy a lottery ticket, this may be your lucky day” and announced that he had found a funding possibility for nearly $2 million to repair the street fully.

City Administrators will prepare a new report outlining a plan to access additional budgetary funds to allow for Ottawa Street to be repaved and streetscaped between Windermere and Pierre.

Pay attention to the note about Erie street and how many times it's been paved in recent times. Erie gets pampered compared to other streets in the city.

I would hope that mayor and council can make a total repave of Ottawa street possible instead of doing it in segments. It's long overdue.

My dentist is on Ottawa and even the half hour or so that I'm sitting in the chair that I can hear the rumble strip cross walks it drives me nuts and I wonder how they can stand hearing it 8hrs a day every day.

Those rumble strip pavers are horrible, great news that they're getting rid of them! Especially for anyone that happens to live near them.

I hope so too, it's a great old street with a lot of charm and history and it deserves a new streetscape.

TD Bank donates downtown building to St. Clair College

St. Clair College will get a new student centre in downtown Windsor.

The TD Bank will donate its branch building at Victoria and University avenues to the college.

John Strasser, the president of the college, said renovations will be done during the summer to get it ready for the start of classes in September.

"We're working with the student council who are very happy we've got a building where they can concentrate more on helping students," Strasser said.

About $1 million is expected to be spent to get the former bank building converted into what Strasser described as a "one stop shop" student centre for the college.

"The building will be more focused on computer facilities, the ability to tutor and counsel," Strasser said. "We'll provide a student centre on the second floor."
This is good news, but it has me thinking where would downtown be if all these buildings hadn't been donated for free in the last couple years. I shutter at the thought.

I keep thinking all these investments by government and the post-secondary institutions in the downtown core will spur private investment, but then I read stories like this:

Source: http://blogs.windsorstar.com/2012/06/12/windsors-rental-vacancy-rate-still-among-highest-in-canada/

Quote:
Windsor’s rental vacancy rate is the highest in Ontario and the second highest in Canada, according to a national housing report.

The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation has released its semi-annual analysis of the country’s rental market.

Windsor’s apartment vacancy rate of 7.7 per cent is second in Canada only to Saint John, New Brunswick (8.4 per cent).

The average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Windsor is $768, compared to a national average of $887.

In comparison, the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Vancouver is $1,210.

The report indicates the overall rental vacancy rate across the country is 2.3 per cent — a slight decrease from 2.5 per cent at this time last year.
Windsor needs jobs! I know it's not going to happen overnight ...

Our rates have actually dropped in half over the years, so we're making some ground and moving in the right direction.

But the point of that Artical is about rentals. With all the investments downtown do we really expect to see more people moving in,not really, we expect more business to develop around our investments in the core. If that doesn't happen then we should be worried.

Yes, I know, that's what I was talking about, a few years ago our vacancy rate was around 17% now it's dropped to 7.7%, so I think that's a pretty good step in the right direction. I'm sure there will at least be some students that will want to rent an apartment in the core to be closer to school, mainly the out of town students, and there are quite a few of them.

Palace/Windsor Star conversion update courtesy of the Windsor Star

source: http://www.windsorstar.com/life/Windsor+Pictures/6860013/story.html

It's no skyscraper, it's not a new building, but this renovation will have a big impact on downtown Windsor's streetscape. Gone is the old movie theater Gone with it is the tired and dated pink stucco facade (pink stucco? Really? Someone should be dragged outside and shot). Let's hope the new facade will freshen up the landscape down there.

It will be interesting to have the paper front and centre downtown, and I'm especially looking forward to what kind of changes in pedestrian activity we will see once the university takes over the old Windsor Star building, Armouries and old bus station.
