Problem with Salt Lake is its large city blocks, which encourages wider buildings than taller ones.

While I would love a 47-story Hotel, I don't think ours would be that tall. I'm thinking more around 30-stories. But I guess it would all depend on where it gets build at.

I agree. I truly doubt we will get a tall tower like Austin (581' roof, 700' spire). It will be more squat, maybe 30 stories and 380'. That would be my guess.

Here is Austin's hotel (very skinny):

Why, of all places, would a Texas city be concerned with taking up too much space?

I think it will be no less than 30 floors but if it hit 35 floors or more I would be thrilled.

Yeah... If anything, I expect it to be similar to PHX CC hotel. Big, boxy and not super tall

Boring, but it would definitely add to the SLC skyline.

A 119 foot Spire? Now that's just cheating.

Look at the picture, it also has at least 5 floors of empty space similar to 222 Main as a light box. I call cheating on that as well.

What an AWESOME site! Thanks for sharing!! I've honestly been on for hours now looking all over SLC. Downtown sadly lost many great structures just so ugly parking lots could be built over the years I had no idea how many houses were demolished just for I-15 to be built. I guess I always thought that that land west of Downtown/train tracks, was undeveloped in 1958 but after looking at this site I can see that's not the case. Same for the east segment of I-80.

There were so many neighborhoods torn up for 1-15 and It makes you wonder why they chose the route they did in western SLC? I would've tried to put I-15 as close as I could to the Union Pacific building as possible.

I also wonder why I-15 and I-80 are elevated freeways or " Eastside Westside barricades" in the valley. Anyone know why UDOT decided to use a bunch of fill and build the freeway up on high land? It seems like much of I-15 and I-80 through the Salt Lake Valley is raised above ground like a wall spliting the valley in half. Any idea why this was done? You'd think it would be easier to build a freeway on the flat land that was already there... Then looking at the I-215 eastern base, it looks like the land was flat there in the beginning but eventually carved out for a sunken freeway.

This site does a great job showcasing what the valley looked like for us folks who weren't alive for much of the development of SLC. After looking at the multiple years on the site its easy to see how the SLC proper's population declined. Sprawl took over the Valley like wildfire. Suburban subdivisions popped up all over the county! No wonder SLC proper has never reached more than its 1960 pop. of 189,454. There are so many dang suburbs in Salt Lake county that they steal much of the population away from the City. I mean SLC's population was doubling, sometimes quadrupling every 10 years! Then came the 60's and all the Sprawl, and we've had a rollercoaster population ever since. Its like SLC had a mini Detroit situation on its hands with all the urban decay.

It bothers me that there is a judgement made by retailers and others who don't know our unique population ordeal, and look at the city propers population and say " this place is too small for us" when in fact 2.5 million live in the Urban area and over 1 million live in the county alone. Salt Lake City's numbers are very deceiving to the unfamiliar.

Luckily, the mid 90's-early 2000's put a dent in the sprawl (in addition to the valley running low on development space), and SLC'S population has risen from its grave. 50 or so years later, here we are in 2012 and we are yet to reach the highest population SLC's ever had (circa 1960) but we are real close! Thank goodness for Downtown housing development, CCC, Trax, renewed intrest in Downtown living, and the economy, people are being lured back to the city. I think SLC's finally fixed their flat tire and we can begin going freeway speeds again!

Another thing I noticed was that today the viaducts into SLC have been shortened down to where they were in 1958. I had no idea they stretched into town as much as they did in the 70's. Just look at 4th south, that viaduct went all the way to 3rd west, right next to pioneer park. Its a good thing thats changed today. I think that would've only added to the shady business and drug deals happening in the park. I would love to see ground level pictures of the 4th, 5th, and 6th South neighborhoods in the 1970's if anyone has any?

Let's hope our hotel is more like Austins and less like the one in Phoenix.

Did any of you happen to catch the new CW series Breaking Pointe? I know, it's not something that any of us would perhaps normally watch, but I happened to catch the promo's, and thought it would be interesting. So, I DVR'd it, not even realizing it was going to be shot on location in Salt Lake City, and would be built around the trials and tribulations of Ballet West's talent. It was great to see Ballet West get so much acclaim, and of course all the great shots around town, alla CW style. DVR it if you get a chance, if only to see a lot of great footage of downtown and the Wasatch Mtns. Salt Lake, Ballet West, etc. comes off looking excellent.

Review: “In a cutthroat world with fierce competition,” a disembodied voice says.

“There is rivalry and relationships,” another continues.

A young woman later haughtily intones: “Do I think everyone belongs? Probably not. To be the best, it takes passion, sacrifice” — dramatic pause — “and obsession.” ...

... These young men and women are wearing ballet tights and costumes. They are the dramatis personae of “Breaking Pointe,” a six-episode reality series making its debut on Thursday night on CW that offers an in-depth look at the inner workings of Ballet West, the esteemed ballet company based in Salt Lake City...

I did watch Breaking Pointe and loved it because if people watch, it will dispel a lot of stereotypes about SLC, like you can't get a drink or have any fun. It shows them drinking and dancing at "The Hotel" downtown, among other things. It also showed views of the mountains, various locales downtown and the Capitol.

This wasn't exactly "CW style," even though it airs on the CW, it was produced by the BBC.

Agree Stenar, it really did dispel a lot of stereotypes. Salt Lake looked cool. I liked how they brought in the passing TRAX throughout the production.

I really like the design of this, and I too hope we get a combination of something between this and Phoenix, but much closer than this. That would be one HUGE benefit of placing it on the Dead Goat site, not a ton of space to work with, they would have no choice but to go up, but wouldn't have a ton of room for more convention space.

While I am in no way a fan of Wingers, I do like to see that they are moving into the questar building. It's yet another sign that there is increasing demand for retail and restaurants in the CBD. It appears from the image that it will have outside, sidewalk adjacent dinning, and on such a busy street. I love this, it's things like this that give a city a pedestrian feel to them.

The positive growth cycle is continuing, more housing leads to more workforce leading to more office demand, leading to more demand for retail/restaurants leading to the need for more housing. Take your pic exactly where that cycle begins, but there could be an argument made for any of those to be the starting point and could be argued in any order.

I agree, I'm excited to see Winger's coming downtown. It's just another restaurant to add to the downtown mix. And although it's a chain, it's a local chain so that is nice too. It reminds me a little bit of Harmon's where a local company that has grown a lot and become a staple in the community now has a downtown presence.

So, are they closing their 6th East location, or will they have 2 locations half a mile apart?

While I hate to see any business close one location just to open another one. I do like the fact that it is moving into the CBD, rather than out of, that is a good sign for the CBD.

Another comment on the convention hotel. I would be happy with something that either becomes the new tallest for SLC even if just by a few feet, or something that reaches a similar height somewhere between Wells Fargo and Promontory. Those two along with COB aren't amazingly tall buildings but adding a fourth one to the skyline would do wonders.
