I feel as if Downtown Montgomery is in a drought in terms of major building announcements. What happened to the hotel plans for Commerce/Bibb?

However, the infill, renovation, and entertainment activity is off the charts.

Has there been an announcement on the re-opening of the Brew Pub? I feel like every month of baseball season that goes by--they are missing out on the chance to really nose dive back into the market!

This is from April's Montgomery Business Journal....

"Here comes their third collaboration – Rail Yard Brewing Co. at the site of the former Brew Pub and next door to Southern Trails. Rail Yard Brewing Co., which is tentatively scheduled to open in June and employ 30 to 40 people – about the same amount as Dreamland – is a “better burger” joint. It is part of a national trend of more upscale burger restaurants that use top-quality meat, ingredients and toppings. “Everything is made-to-order,” Younger said."

Exactly! I believe they are going to have to work through ADA complaints over the location of that staircase. One of the supports comes down into the handicap ramp at that corner... not to mention so much of the regular sidewalk is blocked.

I looked at the site first hand. I'm not an engineer or architect but it appeared to me that it would not be possible unless they removed the sidewalk tree. Even then the stairs would need the thinner which might be a problem. It looked as if it would create a jam of people near the ground floor entrance and people using the stairs during a busy period. Perry Street sidewalk is fairly small in comparison to Dexter. I might be totally wrong, my imagination might be playing tricks on me but that's how it seemed. Or they just needed the cut cost.

I met with a group of concerned citizens and two city employees at 78 Dexter yesterday morning. I am (very) cautiously optomistic that a solution could be in the works. Besides the inappropriate location of the staircase, there are ADA problems. The city representatives are concerned and appear to want this issue resolved. I will share more as this unfolds...

The Alley has been extended all the way to Coosa (although the new shops aren't yet occupied), and there's an 'upscale' restaurant that front's Coosa and backs into the Alley called Central.

Went to Central for our anniversary a few weeks ago. It was good. Nice food, decent service, awesome space.... but it didn't feel special or unique, not distinct enough to say, "Hey when you are in Montgomery you have to go to Central".

We desperately need a place like that.

That's all good and well, and great for those schools, but notice the common denominator there... Something needs to be done to step up the game at the bigger public schools.

The common thread that I see is that Huntsville and Birmingham suburban public HS's are the only ones that can compete with the magnet(pseudo-charter) schools. And where the hell are the Mobile metro Public HS's? Seems like they really love their Private Education down there instead.

Cenntinial Hill neighborhood is finally seeing some action. Groundbreaking has begun on the "Plaza" which I am not sure what that will look like. Didn't find it on the proposal I found will searching.

On a side note, that is was totally turned me off about the Commerce Street Soda Shop. It's interior is so bland and seems as if they didn't even try to make it unique. The food is some that you can get anywhere. It's a pretty boring and uninspired place. Sad really.

The property where Montgomery's downtown skatepark is located is up for sale. If the council votes yes, it will become new downtown living and shopping.

The Montgomery City Council is voting Tuesday to approve the sale of the property on the corner of Bibb and Lee Streets situated directly across from the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center -- prime downtown property.

That means the skaters will have to find someplace else to go, but this was always part of the plan.

"All along, the skatepark was a great amenity and is a great amenity. It was intended as something temporary," until a better investment came along, said City Developement Director Chad Emerson.

The City doesn't make money on the skatepark, and considering it's prime location, Emerson said there's a better use.

"We've run some numbers and in the long run, [the] City's going to make some really nice money on this investment when it comes to the revenue which the developer produces."

Developer Luis Rubio is eyeing the property. He's planning to transform it into loft apartments with retail space on the first floor.

That's what the City has been working toward by making improvements downtown to attract developers.

"It's a multi-million dollar project. He's bringing a good chunk of his own money into the project and so before you do that, you need predictability," Emerson said.

The property is for sale for $300,000. Rubio said it'll be a nearly $9 million investment and, if approved, he's hoping to start construction in January.

The Department of Parks and Recreation is looking into new locations for the skatepark, but nothing is concrete yet.

That's the story that I've heard. Will be going in the old Wood Gallery building, which sits between the drive-ins at Regions Bank and Norman Bridge Road.

I hope this will be a good restaurant. It will be awesome to have another eating establishment within walking distance!
