Considering our new parking garage apparently won't have the proper protective coating for the surface parking areas, I suspect the same for this copper.

I'd be surprised if it is actual copper, but then again nothing really surprises me anymore.

The roof of the courthouse in Charlottetown is made of copper. It actually took years for it to oxidize and turn green. I believe they replaced the roof after about 20 years or so.

Even if it turns green, I think that could look very cool. That's the beauty of copper, it has character and adds appeal to a building whether it is brand new or 50 years old.

I can see that possibly being the long-term plan; it'd then match all the other oxidized copper on buildings all over the uptown.

I'm wondering if the housing starts include social housing developments.

From CHSJ News,

The Golden Mile being a boost with a new Kent Building Supplies location set to go up at the site of an old garage on Catherville and Fairvale Boulevard. Mary Keith, a spokesperson for Kent, tells CHSJ News they don't have a definite time frame on the new build but it's going to happen soon.

She adds a local company has been awarded a contract to demolish the existing structure in preparation for the construction.

It's part of a broader more to revitalize shopping in the area with a new Walmart also being put in the former Zeller's location in Lancaster Mall.

PotashCorp Might Expand Terminal In Saint John

The potash expansion currently underway at Picadilly could lead to an expansion of the potash terminal here in the city -- that according to the president of PotashCorp.

Garth Moore says it would be a substantial upgrade because the company would need more rail lines and the ability to load larger ships.

Moore says there are no fixed plans yet but talks could begin later this year, which would include consultations with the community.

It's a shame that the different mapping services can't combine their data somehow. So much effort gets wasted duplicating maps. Even worse, you get a weird hodgepodge where one service has excellent coverage of one town, but you have to go to a different site for the same quality for the next town over.

Looking at the month to month figures for housing starts is foolish at this time of year. Usually there are not that many yet...so a single apartment building with 20 units could throw the numbers one way or the other.

Really you can't tell what the building season is going to look like until the June numbers come out and then look at Jan-June 2011 vs. Jan-June 2012. That will give a much better result.

The 2012-2016 Saint John Common Council will be the following:

Shelley Rinehart-Deputy Mayor

Shirley McClary-Councillor-At-Large

Susan Fullerton-Ward 2

John Mackenzie-Ward 2

Donnie Snook-Ward 3

Donna Reardon-Ward 3

David Merrithew-Ward 4

Ray Strowbridge-Ward 4

And it's a great thing for Saint John now that the manipulative Court family is out of City Hall, and better that Shirley McClary will be under the thumb of Norton and Rinehart, having her ideas vetted and filtered to something that will benefit Saint John, and not herself. =)

Two Things, Bell/Bell Aliant have erected a new Cell phone Tower beside their CO Building across from Mcallister Mall, quite the site I must say.

Pita Pit should be opening up around the first week of June or so.

Former Mayor Will Now Chair Airport Board

Former mayor Norm McFarlane being named the Chair of the Saint John Airport Board of Directors.

McFarlane tells CHSJ News it is an honour to helm the board as growing the airport was one of his major projects when he was mayor.

One of the first things he wants to improve is the first impression people get at the airport as well as renaming the facility to "The Saint John International Airport."

He believes the international moniker would attract more customers.

He adds the board is also seeing if the land around the airport is viable for future development.

Its all in the name I guess...but what exactly makes it an international airport in his eyes? At least Freddy had a flight to Boston when they re-named it there.

So we will have three international airports in NB and only one year-round international flight

Yeah that's sort of silly. First with the 6-lane highway joke and now this, it seems as if Saint John (and all of NB for that matter) wants to be in the big leagues, but that's never going to happen unless there is a really great reason for the population to suddenly explode and we get an influx of wealth. It's a regional airport of very very low passenger volumes, not an international airport, so why name it as such? No sense in trying to trick people. We should be proud of our little city the way it is. It might someday be once of the places where people can escape the hectic lifestyle and problems of big city life elsewhere in the world.

Saint John International Airport

Makes as about much sense as the 'Greater Moncton International Airport'

There is nothing 'greater' about Moncton!
Saint John...we're talking proud!

I though it was going to far when Moncton went "international". Then Freddy got on board, and that was nuts.

If there is a business case for year round international flights to and from YSJ then it doesn't matter what we call it...they will come.

Anyway, at least we have seasonal flights to Mexico...
