I was just thinking the exact same thing. Other than the balconies (which aren't that great looking), it's just a blah brick building.

Article from Tribune about the City Council once again tackling mayor Becker's proposal to redefine some of the liquor laws in the city. Progress? Well, I won't hold my breath, but I'm glad it's being addressed.

Im not sure if there are any plans for this building at the moment, however, this building used to be a theater. Originally it was the Pantages, until the Pantages moved to their new location on Main Street. This theater then became the Colonial Theater, then the Victory Theater. The theater house burned down long ago, but the foyer still exists. If you look on google maps, you can see a void on the block where the theater house once stood. Here are some photos:

I had my realtor contact the owners about 4 years ago and they had absolutely no interest in selling the building at that time, and it's pretty obvious that they haven't done anything to redevelop the property. Hopefully they will either decide to do something or be willing to sell.

Thanks for all of the historical photographs, it's always a fun to take a look into the past.

I like the new project on State Street. I agree that its design is not the most interesting but it will add some much needed life to that block of State Street. The transformation from the old rundown hotels to the this proposal is huge. I can't wait to see the project begin to rise out of the ground.

Wow. I had no idea that there was a big theater there back in the day. It sure would be nice if we could restore the original facade and find good use for that building...maybe office.

I'ld like to see this one, plus the ugly Zim's building on State, and the building located mid-block on the south side of 1st south between Main and West Temple, all restored to their former glory. The preservation of the city's architectural history brings so much more character and charm to the city.

Here is the most recent picture that I believe is the total of what is, at least partially, under that mess.

I think a great idea would be to restore the facades, and add on taller in the rear, similar to what they are doing on two of the buildings on the State St. Project. This would bring back some another piece of historic architecture on 300 S, along with the Brooks Arcade and the Judge building, would proivde some additional retail on the street. I would like to see this is mixed income residential, bringing even more residents downtown.

The great thing about this location is there is a parking garage located on each side east and west, along with one directly across the street. It is very likely that a shared parking agreement could be arrange and no parking on site would need to be accomodated. I do however imagine that at least some spots could be accomodated in the basement of the building.

As for you mentioning the Zims (Pebble and Twigs) building. When I viewed the property about 4 years ago, I was told that the facade was somewhere around 80-90% in tact, underneath that lovely 60's vomit.

I think ideally, it could be used as a theater again. I would love for Hale Theater to open a downtown venue for theater-in-the-round, to compliment the performing arts downtown. I've compared the space where the auditorium used to stand, to the West Valley venue. It seems there is enough space to build a new in-the-round auditorium with additional support space, all behind the existing building.

I'd love to be able to view the interior, see if the lobby still resembles the lobby. Again, maybe something similar to The Rex, restore the theater, have some additional 300 S retail on each side of the entrance and create some housing above it on the back portion.

As we talk about more downtown housing, and we see all those under construction in downtown and around the city, it is obvious that it is needed. There is definitely a need for restricted income housing, but there is also a need for market rate apartments, this is obviously by how quickly City Creek Landing leased out, and even Seasons at City Creek, which is just outside the CBD. That is why I am glad to read that the State Street RDA project will be mixed income, unlike Providence Place which was 100% income restricted.

Didn't that building become The Paris department store back in the 50's & 60's, or am I mistaken? Seems like the former theater and lobby interior would have been completely gutted.

If you look closer at my past and present image you will see that the Paris was to the west of the theater. The newer building that now houses Jimmy Johns, Junior's Tavern, Toasters and Rich's Burger.

Oh okay, thanks Future Mayor for calling that to my attention. I guess those were smaller retail shops between Auerbachs and The Paris then. Hmm, I bet you feel like a kid waiting to discover a hidden treasure. Weren't you the one that took the tour of the inside of the Dinwoody a while ago? I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that that one will be restored.

While this is not news to us forumers it is nice that the Tribune published this article. I think it will help bring more people downtown, and encourage those reading it to explore Main St, next time the visit City Creek Center.

Four new businesses spring up on Salt Lake City’s Main

Downtown » ‘Renaissance’ spreads farther south.

We start a new thread whenever any one thread hits 10,000 replies. A link to the previous thread is in the first post of this thread, or you could scroll down half way down the mountain west forum page and find the old thread.

Doesn't seem to be a lot going on lately. Except, Sugar House thread seems to be getting more attention the past week or two.
