Housing-start growth won't slow any time soon
By Alan Thomarat, The StarPhoenix
May 12, 2012 3:04 AM

The busy construction season continues with strong housing starts from our two largest cities and surrounding regions. Construction starts for the Regina region show substantial growth in multi-unit construction while the Saskatoon region continues to gain in single family starts. The overall increase of 44 per cent across all starts for the year to date in 2012 indicates that this summer will be another active season for builders. Opportunity for entrepreneurs has never been more abundant than it is right now in Saskatchewan. [...]

For small projects I couldn't agree more! Additionally, this place is right in the heart of NUTANA!!! I think there are plenty of clientele that would just walk.

Maybe they're just afraid that while the original intention is a yoga studio, it may evolve into a place for Zumba... that loud latino music would be completely destroy the neighbourhood.

/sarcasm

Completely odd decision.

The city relaunched its online interactive map to revive interest in the application after years of declining use.

The iMap program on the city's website offers residents a place to find locations and details of city leisure centres, parks, schools and emergency services and other points of interest in Saskatoon. The new iMap offers improved navigation and search capability compared to the old version introduced several years, said Kevin Peacock, city manager of corporate information services. "The old product was clunky and slow and took many clicks to find information," Peacock told reporters at the launch on Thursday. "We've made it a lot easier for people to use. The mapping is fast and detailed." [...]

The new iMap is much better than the old one. A little slow though.

Warman named as site of big box retail development
By TERRY PUGH

A major 250,000 square foot shopping centre is in the works for Warman.

The new centre, to be known as Stonegate at Warman, will feature big box retail stores, a large grocery store, free standing restaurants and financial institutions. A hotel is also a possibility. The development will be situated on 30 acres of land north of Warman at the intersection of the new Highway 305 and Range Road 3050 (also known as Centennial Boulevard or Neuhorst Road).

Construction, including land servicing and road improvements, is expected to begin in 2013, with completion of the retail spaces slated for 2014.

Church, Rogers agree on cross-bearing cell tower

Does anyone on here know anything about these or this plan specifically? The current tower is apparently atop the Scott Forget towers on Louise and Rogers Communications said they are being forced to move the tower to a new location. I have a relative in the proposed area and the "community meeting" the other night was nothing short of a "Gong Show" and Rogers reps were pretty busy lying through their teeth... anyone got anything on this??

Rogers Communications and a Saskatoon church are planning to erect a cell tower adorned with a cross in the church’s parking lot, pending a community consultation.
Preston Avenue Community Church (http://pacc.sasktelwebsite.net/) Pastor Roy Hewko said Sunday the church is enthusiastic about an artist rendering of the 30-metre tower that has a cross at the top.
“A cross is a very important symbol for us,” he said.
Matching cell towers with crosses isn’t a new idea—cell towers shaped crosses or incorporated into church steeples are becoming more common across North America.

A 30-metre cell phone tower is proposed for the Preston Avenue Jessica Smith/Metro Saskatoon Community Church in Saskatoon.

Church, Rogers agree on cross-bearing cell tower church steeples are becoming more common across North America.
Church board member Mervin Hartman said he likes that the cross will be visible from a distance.
“The cross is important to us because our savoir died on the cross and rose from there. That’s something we believe and it’s important to us,” he said.
The Church has agreed to lease the small area of the parking lot to Rogers for an undisclosed amount of money, contingent on Rogers getting approval for the tower through a community consultation process
A Rogers spokesperson was unavailable to speak about the issue on Sunday.
A public meeting will be held at the church on May 10 as part of Industry Canada’s required consultation process for cell towers near residential neighbourhoods.
Hewko said he is prepared for some questions from the church’s neighbours, but the congregation is supportive of the idea.
Doreen Wilson, who lives a couple doors down from the church, is opposed.
“It’s something we feel shouldn’t be placed in a residential area,” she said. “I don’t know why they can’t put it in the middle of the bush or a park some place.”
She’s concerned about the tower decreasing property values and said she worries about possible long- term impacts on health. She also doesn’t like the proposed look of the tower.
(http://metronewsca.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/celltowerinset_wandagoodwin.jpg?w=160) “The cross has nothing to do with it. We just don’t want the ugly thing there,” she said.
Ward Coun. Charlie Clark said he also has concerns about the impact of the tower on the neighbourhood and he will learn more about the issue and residents’ views prior to the community meeting.
“It doesn’t seem like an ideal location to me,” he said, adding that the federal government has jurisdictio over telecommunications towers.

Hmmm, even more reason to start charging a commuter toll on Warman Road. Now they won't even be spending their money in Saskatoon, to help pay for the roads.

Not a fan of the concept of toll roads. Usually they are used to raise money to pay for a new road or bridge.

I am guessing this development is probably a big box store and strip mall development. Main street type development would have been nicer. Not all that exciting, however the concept of having more employment (even if just retail) in that area is not bad. That provides the opportunity for a number of people who live in Warman and Martinville to actually work in the community instead of commuting into Saskatoon.

The customers these stores will attract are people who may have been driving into Saskatoon for shopping, again a good move all around. The shops in Saskatoon will do fine, the population of the city is also expanding.

I am more surprised by the fact that Rogers is building a new tower, period, than anything else. Rogers has not touched their Saskatchewan network in years, and are notorious for the reputation of having the worst cellular network in the province.

EDIT: My surprise was premature. I just now read the "...current tower is apparently atop the Scott Forget towers on Louise and Rogers Communications said they are being forced to move the tower to a new location" part. So no new tower per se, just a relocation.

They really drove the point home with their slogan, too: If you can't beat 'em, NUKEM.
