I've just always been an advocate of development that was sympathetic to its surroundings, especially in the historic core. This project fits the bill to a T. Also, it's rare that I don't know of a serious project for Downtown Los Angeles. JDR, slap this one on the front page!

Also, just a clarification, when I say that I am a fan of responsible development, I don't mean that said development has to be the same height and massing as all of its surroundings. Take the Best Proposal Ever (TM) Park Fifth, for example.

See how all the lines match up perfectly with the surrounding historic building? It's that kind of visual homage that I love. Note especially the part on the right next to the Subway Terminal Building, and how there is almost an individual cube that lines up directly with said Subway Terminal Building. I love that shit.

Godamn, I love Park Fifth....

In addition to the subway access and renovations to Pershing Square, I always loved the fact that Park Fifth represented an extension of high-rise development East into the Historic Core. Tall buildings shouldn't be confined to the corridor from Bunker Hill to South Park.

I don't know. I was a fan of Park Fifth and I really wanted to see it built but I'm a fan of the symmetry of DTLA's skyline. I'd love to see new ground up development in the Historic Core but only if it's in the same scale as the surrounding buildings. Something like Medallion. But..you know..much better.

^ Unfortunately, I don't think that's an active proposal. That lot is proposed to be a parking garage with some ground floor retail. Originally they had planned for a mid-sized supermarket (like a Fresh N Easy), but Jose Juizar fought it because it didn't provide access to the backs of the theaters on Broadway. So it's kind of in limbo.

Though what's pictured above would have been infinitely better.

In other Historic Core news, I spoke to a friend with inside knowledge of the restaurant trade (he's designing some exciting bar and restaurant concepts that I can't talk about now, but will add significantly to the area's continued resurgance).

Josef Centano - of Baco and Lazy Ox fame - is taking over the Urban Noodle space and the retail store next to it, and planning to open an upscale Mexican restaurant (think Mas Malo or Spanish Kitchen). In his hands, it should be pretty amazing; Baco and Lazy Ox are both going strong. Given typical restaurant timelines in the City of LA, it could take anywhere from 8-12 months to open.

Urban Noodle was essentially displaced by that development, and the owners are looking at other sites in downtown to relocate, one of which is the New Genesis Apartments, which may have two restaurant spaces in it. According to my friend, those talks are somewhat advanced, but by no means set in stone.

And speaking of New Genesis, the chef from the Great Balls On Tires truck (which hasn't been "on tires" for some time in favor of supplying great meatball dishes at Villains Tavern), is rumored to be opening up a brick and mortar restaurant on the ground floor of that development, which is really coming along. If he does open there, that would be the second popular food truck to open a restaurant downtown, Flying Pig Cafe in Little Tokyo being the first.

That in addition to the projects my friend's working on, the Simply Salad going in at the Medallion, and a planned Indian restaurant at the Higgins building, we're looking at even more dining options downtown.

I love DT as much as anybody else on here, but I think your perception my might be a little skewed. There is no way civic park is better than central park or millenium park. First they are about million times bigger and second they have amazing, ponds, fields, theaters, the frank gehry designed pritzker pavliion that should have been in LA rather than disney because it is outside, but that is another matter) and I really could go on forever, but all say one more thing, it's connected on all sides to the street and not blocked by buildings.

just realized you said it hopes to rival millenium park and not central park...my bad. Still though...no shot. Don't get me wrong, it will be a great addition. The piggyback yards, now if that gets built could rival millenium park

I don't think Civic Park is being made to rival Central or Millennium Park. If anything, the 101 cap would.

Remeber the hotel that will be built between the two South Group buildings? The botique one built in the old crack house? Well, renders have just been revealed, and from a very unlikely source. I noticed them on Arch Daily! They were featured today.

Area currently:

New proposed hotel:

http://www.archdaily.com/234370/downtown-la-hotel-xten-architecture/

Looks to be about ten stories. Not bad, not bad at all....

EDIT: according to this, it is seven stories, and ninety feet tall. So, high ceilings, I guess.

Oh, wow, that's unexpected. I thought it was simply going to be renovated and stay at three stories.

EDIT: Thanks for that extra info Illithid!

Yeah, took me aback as well, especially considering the off-beat way I found the renderings. Also, concerning the front page, shouldn't this project be listen under new proposals instead of renovations? After all, it looks like this is going to be a completely new building.

That actually looks pretty cool. Something like this will work in that area.
