Love Douglas Cardinal, but this thing is out of scale for the site and appears heavy. Would it hurt to lighten the look of this thing?

Of course, it is probably more interesting than half the stuff built these days..............oh well.

I'm not really a fan of Cardinal myself and this building especially. He seems to pull a Gehry style of repetitive work. Which isn't bad as long as it evolves, but his work very predictable.

As some have already mentioned it seems to be an island onto itself. Aside from the architecture, then theres the question as to why there needs to be a separate building for a student centre? Isn't Place Riel suppose to be the hub for ALL student activity away from each departmental building? And they just did some major upgrades and renovations to that building.

I understand that yes it will be connect to the underground pathways. But it still stands as a separate entity.

OK don't wanna sound like a stick in the mud here. But I simply have to pose the question: If the idea was to build two almost identical smaller buildings. Why not just build one 15 story building?

I don't know for certain however it sounds like the building was not pre-leased. So building a smaller building reduced the developers exposure if they were not able to rent out the building. Reality is the market absorbed the new building before it was completed. Hopefully the developer is willing to take a bigger risk with the next building.

A plan to turn the Fine Art Cafe into a yoga studio didn't have enough flexibility for its developers, who killed the project this week.

The plan would have renovated and expanded the Nutana building at Temperance Street and 14th Street, but the developers needed a zoning change from the city because the plan didn't have enough parking, an issue that led to neighbours organizing against the project.

Ryan Leier and a business partner planned to move the One Yoga studio into the building with Museo Coffee and build a second-floor residence for Leier's family. The property's sale was subject to financing and the financing subject to the zoning change, which was supposed to happen in March, but the resistance from neighbour's slowed the process, Leier said.

"It was taking too much time and the deal fell through," he said. " We put in nine months of work and we couldn't keep pushing back deadlines ... It's too bad it didn't work out. It would have been great for the community."

Leier said he's not bitter the project died, but he is disappointed he couldn't work with the neighbours to ease their concerns even though a second proposal he distributed to the community shrunk the development by half. There's also been plenty of positive response from the neighbourhood, he added.

Agreed. You have to be at the very top of the NIMBY ladder to be opposed a friggin' yoga studio. I mean, do you know what kind of riff raff a place like that would bring to the neighbourhood?!? Think of the children!!

Agreed - as far as land uses go, I don't think you can get more low impact than a Yoga studio. Guess they want no development. Regina/Saskatoon need to move towards abolishing minimum parking standards. All they do is impede good development.

Wow Montgomery gets a freeway, a dump, a grain elevator, a train station, bus barns and soon a small town built next to them and Nutana can't handle a few parking spots. There is really something wrong with this.

I live on Temperance and I have to say that this NIMBY opposition was absolutely asinine. They should be careful what they wish for, because something much worse will end up there (or nothing at all - which might be what they want in the first place).

There's a bit of an update on the Montgomery development. There will be 180 low income rental apartments built by the BC developer (whose name escapes me), but North Ridge is now working with the Montgomery Community Association as well as some business owners in Montgomery and there is a possibility there will be a commercial component to the North Ridge part of the development (restaurant, deli, dry cleaner, etc. -- this idea was proposed by business people in Montgomery, so I am hoping this idea develops into somethign nicer than a strip mall). Also, North Ridge is considering several more options beyond rental apartments: 4 story condos with underground parking, townhouses with no garage, townhouses w/ attached garage, and a seniors complex. They sent out a questionnaire and some concept art to see what residents want. I am feeling a lot better about it now than I was before when it was meant to be all single use rental apartments.

The opposition to the yoga studio baffles me. The fact that the owner planned to live above his studio should've calmed many of the residents... and yoga studios aren't particularly rowdy places either. I don't get it.

I'm glad there will be some changes in the Montgomery plan. We lived there for 23 years before moving downtown and would hate to see such a drastic change.

During construction of the new health sciences expansion across the street, they were required to build a tunnel 10m underground for the potential of this new building. It is currently just a concrete hallway leading to a dead end. It will be easy to tie into and will be able to tie into the arts tunnel if needed.

Innovative Residential's new Hartford Crossing development in Blairmore will add 84 units to Saskatoon's stock of entry-level housing.

"The project is virtually the same project as Bella Vista in Hampton Village," says Tyler Mathies, CEO of Innovative Residential. "There are 84 units of modular housing that are stacked town houses. The lower level, ground-floor units are 760 square feet and are two bedrooms.

Online city map relaunched

The city relaunched its online interactive map to revive interest in the application after years of declining use.

The iMap program on the city's website offers residents a place to find locations and details of city leisure centres, parks, schools and emergency services and other points of interest in Saskatoon. The new iMap offers improved navigation and search capability compared to the old version introduced several years, said Kevin Peacock, city manager of corporate information services. "The old product was clunky and slow and took many clicks to find information," Peacock told reporters at the launch on Thursday. "We've made it a lot easier for people to use.
