this is a Toronto/Chicago comparison I did a few months ago so it's slightly outdated (although I did add the new prominent Toronto proposals)
These figures include the CN tower as even though it's not a 'building' I'd adds greatly to the Toronto skyline, also these numbers include high rises in the suburbs of both cities. (Hamilton/Oshawa/Barrie/Milwaukee not included)

These numbers were taken from the SSP database

Edit: includes built, UC, on hold, and proposals

Exactly. In 3-4 years, Toronto will have closed the gap with Chicago for 200-299m buildings. Chicago will have 21, Toronto will have 25. It's the 300-500 m range where we'll still fall short. They'll have 8, while Toronto likely zero. Chicago is proposing an office tower 600 m tall. If that gets built, the gap will widen substantially again. We're talking twice the height of FCP.

chicago currently has no supertalls under construction. the waterview tower or whatever was cancelled, and is now a concrete shell sitting in the city, with plans for it to be completed around 200m.

the 600m office proposal is a bunch of shlock that some "developer" "proposed". this "developer" has an even worse reputation than harry stinson, if that s possible. (in other words, the 600m proposal won't be happening)

As accurate as these may be, has anyone stopped to think that maybe not all of the towers under construction or proposed in Chicago are not shown? Same with towers currently existing in the city. It is up to the users to create them, so there can be huge discrepancies in these numbers.

There may be a discrepancy in the number of shorter buildings, thats true, but there cant be very many 500 ft+ towers unaccounted for...

Oh no, I don't mean those ones, I am just referring to the average apartment tower or condo tower. Of course of the super tall's, you're not really going to miss any of those.

But in regards to the average tower, on SSP you're counting on forum members to submit the towers. And considering the fact that Toronto probably has the largest amount of members it wouldn't be a stretch to say that more of its towers are probably recorded on the site.

Even in regards to some key towers. In Winnipeg for instance I know there are proposals and even two are under construction for numerous high rises right now, but only two are shown as being proposed.

In other words I would take those statistics with a grain of salt.

I think that's a huge issue for places like Shanghai, Beijing, and Sao Paulo, but for Chicago I think it's pretty apparent that it's one of the most accurately tracked cities in the database. The fact is, outside of central Chicago (mainly the Loop and Near North Side) and the Gold Coast, Chicago is very flat. Despite its reputation, Chicago really isn't a "city of highrises", it's a mainly lowrise city with a few high-profile highrise areas along its coast.

I love the layered look, the different building forms, and the detail and texture on the church. To me, that kind of shot is more interesting than a shot that is all boxy glass office towers of any height.

WOW, nice shots! I'm kind of glad that Montreal is only getting slightly grazed by the high-rise condo boom, just because views like this are preserved. It would be a shame for this to be clogged up with "clone" towers.

I've always loved this view of the Calgary skyline - Towers, Park, River, Mountains. The Peace Bridge adds to it a lot. What a magnificent structure.
