Officials had originally hoped to open the museum in 2012, but later set a goal of finishing construction in 2012 and opening in 2013.

"We're working towards 2014, we'll be able to confirm that. We're trying to provide people with a bit of a clearer timeline," museum spokesperson Angela Cassie told CBC News on Tuesday.

"Right now, all of our work plans are aligning for an opening in 2014, but that date is contingent on a few factors."
Breaking news... a massive project is experiencing delays.

Another "make the white elephant into a waterpark or some stuff" poster. Night and day, day and night from the Sun and others who represent both the traditional Winnipeg cheapness and a disturbing hint of a sniff of xenophobia.

(Not to insult anyone here, but commenting more on an attitude)

I'm sorry. It's just that every day it seems to be the same thing: complaining about delays or content or the Aspers. People brand the Museum a "White Elepant" that should be torn down or converted into a waterslide or something equally idiotic and then other people accuse those first people of antisemitism, cheapskatery and a bumpkin's lack of ambition.

(sigh) I want to see this thing done, I want it to bring to light the successes and failures of the struggle for Human Rights and... I'm just tired of seeing the signs that this city may have more than it's share of rural insularity in what should be a country (or even continental) class city.

A friend of a relative of mine is working on the museum; he said it’s going to cost an extra one hundred fifty million just to get the systems running. That puts the cost so far at six hundred million. If you are charging people sixty dollars each for entry even with a hundred thousand visitors a year it would still take a hundred years to pay off.

They were also talking about the new stadium (They’re also working on that) saying believing anything you read in the papers about it is foolish.

Who cares. One World Trade Center cost 3.8 Billion dollars, and people aren't complaining about that. Whether Private or Public, does it really matter? We won't see the impact individually except in that we will go to see the museum if we want to. Stop worrying about it and enjoy this world class facility. It is almost finished.

And just because your friend says something doesn't mean he knows anything about it. I work for a company that builds houses, does that mean I know how much it is going to cost for the house I am working on to be built? No.

That's a shame, but surely you must see the irony in your post?

My brother in laws friend knows someone who is involved as a chief engineer at NASA. He said that the reason there are cost over-runs at the museum are as follows (and this is top secret - please don't share with anyone else); we all know that they have been stating that the displays and content in the museum is highly technical and fairly computerized, apparently NASA has been working on new technology that allows the ability to view events in the past. Supposedly the CMHR has been selected as a trial location for this new technology. This is expected to cost between $100 and $300 million. The public is not supposed to know this because it is top secret. No one is sure who will be paying for all of this but i have heard the US Government is now involved so it might not cost us anything.

Cool hey.

That's awesome! I also heard some top secret news the other day. A friend of mine's cousin has a neighbour who cuts the hair of this one lady, who's on-again-off-again boyfriend pumps the effluent out of the on site porta-potties. From what he's heard (and he often here's construction gossip when the workers are taking smoke breaks), the $150 M mentioned by our new forumer is actually being used to enhance the technology unveiled for the first time at Coachella this year! Hologram Tupac, make way for Hologram Gandhi, Hologram MLK, and Hologram Mandela!

Funny guys!!

Anyways, I was walking back to St. Boniface after my Hex-weekly Haircut downtown and noticed that they are continuing on the glass installation finally! There are panes on the ground on the south end of the construction site, and they are Monstrously huge!!!!!! Literally looked like they were easily 12 feet long by 6 feet high! If not larger!

cost over runs hah its the engineers playing peny pinching games cutting things out then a month later adding it back

ex
there was a bunch of duct work that was being installed that was axed when it was re added all the scaftholding that was installed for the masons was removed resulting in a cost over run cause now u need several man lifts to do the job or so i have herd.

if they could get rid of the accounting games going on at this thing u would prolly start to see the over runs get under controll

Wonderful picture chris, the museum really fills in an awesome gap in the skyline from that angle... I cant wait for it to be complete!!

That picture will be even better if that mixed use residential development is built at any point in our lifetimes lol.

Xenophobia? I think most Winnipeggers are against the CMHR due to it's poor project management, and out of control budget. The only xenophobia exhibited here is in the minds of the CMHR supporters.

I seem to recall that being said about Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

Why so defensive? The guy is just passing some information about the project he heard from an inside source. I have no reason not to believe him.

A word I made up! It just means that I get my hair cut every six or so weeks. Derived from the term bi-weekly.

And I am not trying to be defensive. But that in no way means what he said was credible. I could easily say that my cousin is David Thompson. But is it true? You shouldn't deem it as so unless I can prove it.

I see no problem with the Olympic Stadium. It cost a lot, but I personally think it was worth it. All of your statements are just on basis of opinion, of which you have every right. However because you disagree with me, in no way makes my opinion less worthy of being heard.

Sounds fair. I'm no fan of the mismanagement either but that still does not mean I am against the whole project... I've even thought that an audit and board replacement were in order.

As to the xenophobia... yes that IS more a fear of the defenders (which include me) but there was some ugliness during the whole Holocaust-Holodomor back-and-forth that set people on edge. Personally, I would be in favor of a separate gallery for the latter (if only to convince the latter-day Stalinists that it was actually considered genocide and not just some kind of land-holders failed revolt).

Sorry I got into this whole thing, but I want this thing to go through.

Olympic Stadium in Montreal has to be one of the biggest white elephants ever constructed in Canadian history. Do you really think a stadium that took 30 years to payoff, and went 10 times over budget, with no major tenant (Expos, Alouettes, etc.) was worth it? Most people in Quebec certainly do not.

In fact, the stadium is still a nightmare for Health and Safety officers:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/story/2012/03/04/que-olympic-stadium-concrete.html

"Last fall, the Quebec government invited residents to come up with proposals for what to do with the seldom-used $1-billion stadium."
