As far as I know these are small towns. I can think of many cities in Latin America with Spanish place names, but most commonly they seem to be obscure towns. Guadalajara is one example -- big city in Mexico, small town in Spain.

I'm not sure if this is by design (e.g. "Madrid" or "Barcelona" considered confusing names for important settlements), or if it's just that settlers were more likely to come from the small towns, or maybe just that the small town names are more common.

Interesting. They are obscure to North Americans, but no more so than London, Ontario might be to somebody in Venezuela. I still think it's kind of weird though, and in the list of Latin American cities those look more like exceptions than examples of a trend. I wonder how many travellers accidentally end up in Barcelona, Venezuela.

Every few years, tourists accidentally arrive in Sydney, Nova Scotia instead of the sun-kissed metropolis they intended to go.

The newspapers, unlike the televised media, are able to edit out the disgust of the travellers as they tolerate their temporary, dirty, and cold setting.

You're question begs the assumption that people intend to go to Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Outside of Cape Breton Island, they most certainly do not.

Lots of people visit Cape Breton island as it is a major tourist destination in Canada and the Cabot Trail is one of the most naturally beautiful attractions in the country. Sydney being the largest city in Cape Breton (containing the most hotels) means that yes, people do intend to go there. Your comment is actually extremely asinine.

ha ha ha! Quite possibly the funniest thing I've read on this site in a long time. As someone who has lived in both Windsors, I can categorically state that Windsor (the one in England) is far more well known worldwide and is definitely more than just a suburb.
Besides being home to the Queen's primary residence, a number of top musicians and sports stars live there. Additionally, departure routes from Heathrow airport are vectored to avoid overflying Windsor Castle and the surrounding centre of Windsor. I very much doubt that aircraft departing Detroit are vectored to avoid Windsor Ontario.
