no, i think that it wasn't even planned or proposed. i think it was just some architecture firm doing some illustrations just for promotion, but i could be wrong.

So no tower crane at the Park Plaza Tower site? I went downtown yesterday to see if I could get a photo, but they only had a crawler crane there. They should have one soon, though. They've been digging like crazy.

And ha! A 4/20 meetup. I'm game.

My brother's wife's birthday is actually on 4/20. I don't think he knew it when they first started going out either. lol

F1 promoters consider Kyle for parking space

Austin Business Journal
Date: Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 6:50am CDT

Formula One organizers are considering building a parking lot along I-35 in Kyle and San Marcos to deal with the massive influx of visitors for the race at the Circuit of the Americas track in November, Hays Free Press reports.
Drivers would leave their cars in the lots and take a shuttle to the racetrack east of Austin. F1 officials said the parking spaces could serve fans coming in from as far as San Antonio.

I was over on east riverside yesterday and noticed for the first time that there has been way more demolition of the ghetto apartments and dirt is already turning. I believe that was the land bought by a company out of Houston. There is also a new spot that is turning ground closer to 35 by where the newest AMLI apartments. Now a rail line would be perfect for that area that is already one of the densest in the city. Maybe that will help get more of the land demo'd fronting Riverside, especially on the south side, it is an absolute disgrace that an area that close is so run down.

This is an old article that shows where the land is and says that heights were increased to include areas that could have up to 120 feet buildings.

I'm just a lurker from Portland. But, I am fascinated by the growth that Austin has been having. What's fueling all this??

The fact that people keep moving here is the main reason. The growth rate never let up during the recession.

Two projects in works on Lamar, near Whole Foods complex

Published: 9:26 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2012

Austin-based Schlosser Development Corp. will soon begin work on two new buildings in high-profile spots on downtown's western edge with a combined price tag of more than $7 million.

The newest project, announced this week, calls for the former KVET radio studios at 705 N. Lamar Blvd. — adjacent to BookPeople, Anthropologie and REI — to be demolished and replaced with 15,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space topped by four levels of parking.

None of the retail space has been leased yet, said Rick Duggan, Schlosser's director of design and construction. The parking spaces, he said, will serve customers and employees of businesses near the West Sixth Street and North Lamar Boulevard intersection.

A site plan was filed in March for the KVET site, and Duggan said construction is expected to begin within the next six months, pending city approval.

Next week, Schlosser will start construction on a previously announced three-story building with a mix of retail and office space just south of the downtown Whole Foods Market location.

The 25,000-square-foot building at 405 N. Lamar Blvd. will have two stories of offices over street-level retail space that will face north and west, Duggan said. It will occupy the southwest portion of the parking lot for Schlosser's existing project at West Fifth Street and North Lamar Boulevard, which has a Starbucks, OfficeMax and the Pure Austin gym.

Random Musings

The other day while going around downtown I noticed that those streets which have been afforded trees with the great streets program or otherwise look best when the trees are not soiled inside of planters. Those trees tend to be much less majestic, or even dying as compared to their cousins who have been planted directly into the ground. I'm not an arborist, but I would expect bound roots to be hindrance when it comes to growing into a mighty shade tree.

Also, I discovered what appears to be site prep/excavation work on the northeast corner of 8th and Nueces. This all appeared to be separate from the massive effort going on in the street to repair and replace sewer and water lines. My suspicion is that this is the beginnings of the Bremond apartment tower.

Further, bravo to the Lake Flato firm as well as the other architects who have brought us the new Cirrus Logic headquarters. I find this building to be an absolute inspired work of art. I love it at every angle and it is brilliant how well it integrates into and compliments Shoal Creek. Next to the Hobby Building, this is taking my vote for most impressive building in Austin.

Central Library Renderings

The Hensel Phelps website shows a few renderings of the central library which I had not previously seen. Apparently, it will be nine stories. Check it out.

Is it just me or do the renderings look like eight stories?
