There is. The Advertiser had an article about it a few months ago about businesses leaving. Not sure how to save it.

I'm really unsure about the effect it would have on downtown. I've wondered about this kind of problem for years. I mean, you've seen past examples of this in Birmingham with 459, Decatur with Beltline Rd, Tuscaloosa with McFarland Blvd, and even cities like Enterprise and Dothan.

However, I get the feeling that the results of a new bypass these days wouldn't be as problematic. It's odd, the same cities that built business-sucking bypasses (Birmingham, Decatur, Tuscaloosa, etc...) are going to eventually be building newer, bigger ones. Birmingham and Tuscaloosa's are eminent and will likely start construction w/in the next 5 years.

Back to where I was starting with "However,..." I think that auto travel becoming more and more cost prohibitive, I think that new bypasses will have MUCH less of an impact on a downtown area than they used to. That's not to say that it won't have an effect, but it would seem that it wouldn't exactly kill downtown.

What I'd like to see is creative tolling on new bypasses. Maybe removing the tolls on entrance and exit of the bypass at the beginning and terminus of the road and only tolling entrance to and exit of the road on the "inside" of the bypass.

Of course, you also have to consider that the change in culture that we've seen as of late, as it relates to perceptions of downtown areas, would lead people to feel less inclined to 1) live far out in suburbs and 2) feel more inclined to commute into downtown despite being near a huge lifestyle center.

We took the dog to the river walk on Sunday afternoon and enjoyed the great weather. Laid out for a while very near to the Sand Bar location and it is indeed coming along. Lots of framing was up, but could not tell much about any particular interior work.

Should be cool...

Best Buy closing 50 stores

Wonder if MGM's will be one? It would definitely contribute to the "hollowing" the blvd.

Anyone know what the sitework activity at the old ASU softball field is going to yield?

I'm hopeful it will be a proper softball facility. I believe the girls have always used an old softball field; never a real college-type complex.

They just built a new softball facility. It's just north of the baseball field.

Coming Saturday April 14th
to RiverWalk at High Red Bluff

Also called Hostile Bluff or Thirteen Mile Bluff, this spot located in a deep bend of the Alabama River was once the key to the Southeast and a strategic point in Colonial days. The first steamboat, the Harriot, arrived at this point in 1821, and the first railroad came in 1880, making Montgomery a transportation hub for people and commerce. When cotton was king, millions of bales were shipped from the wharf here by steam boat to Mobile and thence to the mills of England. The tunnel under the railroad tracks was built in 1879 so that horse-drawn wagons of cotton could be brought to wharf without crossing the tracks.

A new day is dawning this Saturday with the opening of SandBAR, Montgomery's premiere open air entertainment venue. Please join us beginning at noon at the silos overlooking the beautiful Alabama river. Enter through the tunnel at the foot of Commerce Street and begin your celebration of the City of Montgomery's inaugural Second Saturday Riverfront Festival which begins at 5pm! Admission to this event is absolutely FREE of charge!

Historians Upset Over Staircase Renovation on Dexter Ave.
By Heather VacLav
Apr 20, 2012

In effort to renovate one of downtown Montgomery's main thoroughfares, the city purchased then sold buildings on Dexter Avenue. But as the first building renovation nears its completion, many people are unhappy about its new design.

"Dexter Avenue is one of the most important streets in Montgomery, if not Alabama and in the Southeast," said Montgomery deputy mayor Jeff Downes. “There is a tenant lined up to move into the building to bring life to a building that has not seen life in years, and can really serve as a catalyst for the rest of Dexter Avenue.”

The building in question, 78 Dexter Ave., added stairs and a second floor balcony to the existing building, but local historians and architects say the design takes away from the history of the building and is steering the renovations in the wrong direction.

"The straw that breaks the camel's back is on the front [of the building],” said Jeff Benton, the author of A Sense of Place: Montgomery's Architectural Heritage. “They added an enormous balcony to make more square footage… but the staircase they decided to put on the outside, and you can see by looking at it, its an abomination, it is really very ugly."

The city of Montgomery says the building may potentially bring in a big name restaurant from Atlanta to rent the space. While the Capitol City agrees the stairs are not appealing to look at, building them into the sidewalk was the only option to keep the building operable and within safety codes.

“Sometimes the question is, do you kill a project for a slightly undesirable set of stairs, or do you keep it alive and keep it to where soon, very soon, we'll be able to be proud that there is life in lower Dexter Avenue?” Downes said.

But historians and people like Benton says the city’s long-term goal could be short lived if the work on the buildings, like 78 Dexter Ave., is not done to the correct standards.

“We're worried about what's going to be happening to the rest of it,” Benton said. “Are people going to be saying if it makes money then its ok? Because I can think of a lot of businesses that will make money but I certainly wouldn't want them here.”

Deputy Mayor Jeff Downes said he understands preservationists’ concerns, like Benton’s, but he says, despite caring “about what they think” sometimes it’s about the practical outcomes.

As for the business to fill the building in question, the city could not confirm the name of the interested tenant, but they did say it was an Atlanta based restaurant. According to Downes, the business could sign onto the lease for the space as early as Friday.

I saw it last weekend and not all that annoyed by it. It helps that it's a rust red color that blends with the brick.

I could have sworn that in the initial phase of this building that it was slated to be a texmex restaurant.

I think it is horrendous... not to mention the way it blocks the sidewalk. Apparently, it is more important for this project to succeed than it is to do the project correctly. This probably does open Dexter Avenue up to other stupid development problems as there is no oversight committee to review items of this nature. This is definitely unfortunate!

The initial phase did mention a texmex or latin-themed (whatever that is?) restaurant. In fact, the initial renderings showed the words CANTINA spread across the upper most floor.
