As you said, Magna Main Street fits the bill. There are a bunch of charming old buildings, but also the new Magna Library, the new Magna Senior Center, the restored Empress Theatre, the Kiwi Bakery, Post Office, Transwest Credit Union, Magna Water District, Magna Chamber of Commerce, Magna Times, Magna Mining Museum, Fire Dept., 2 churches (neither LDS—although one of the buildings was a former pioneer-era LDS church), Colosimo's deli (maker of famous Colosimo's sausages), Veterans of Foreign Wars lodge, gas stations, dentist's office, salon, art studio, funeral home, car wash, a newer apartment complex that has its entry on Main, auto repair shops, police dept, bars, fast food and sit down restaurants, etc.

One block off Main St. is a huge park and a private golf course.

There should be an active civic building like a post office or library(ie not just a building like a school district headquarters but a building the general public has reason to visit) and a place of worship. General look should be of a place valued and patronized by the populace.
Based on your criteria for a classic main street, i would say that Bountiful fits. I am only using the area from 400 N to about 900 S, as that is the classic portion.

- Drug Store - Rite Aid
- Cafe - Granny Annie's just opened up in the old Marie Calander's building
- Bank - Wells Fargo, Zions, Deserret First, Key Bank
- Hardware or Genereal Merchandise - it doesn't really have this, although Rite Aid could be considered general merch. There used to be Bountiful Lumber but that building was recently restored into office space with retail and residential added behind and to the north
- Post Office - corner of main and center
- Library - about 800 S
- Place of Worship - Historic Bountiful Tabernacle

There is also frozen yogurt store, phili cheesesteak shop, bagel shop, indian restaurant, italian restuaranat, salons and a barber shop, numerous boutiques, antique shop, fabric store, two reception halls, used book store, plus office and residential space. There is a lot of improvement that can be done, especially getting rid of the used car dealers, but overall not to shabby. However, I wont argue that it is the ONLY historical main street in Utah as the article suggests

I have it on good authority that Neuroworks, an outpatient rehab clinic is planning to build a campus in South Jordan directly west of the freeway on the south-west corner of 10000 S 300 W. It's three or four 2-story buildings. I may be able to get renderings at somepoint in the future, but they are currently working the land deal.

While I hate to see more suburban sprawl 3-4 story buildings, I am glad to see that it least it is being built near transit and somewhat near other similar sized buildings. I would rather have a node of these size buildings around a FrontRunner stop rather than a couple at every freeway interchange.

Agreed Mayor. Won't the subraban sprawl EVER stop ? I mean ebay could have done a 12-15 story building rather than a 4 building campus in Draper. Too bad developers won't do 10+ story buildings over office parks.

Too bad it isn't two buildings that are four stories. Oh well. Thanks for the info.

Does anyone know what the status is on new Living Planet Aquarium?
I heard that it is going to close in October this year and open just 6 months later in April in the new building. I would assume construction would begin before October though.

I drove by the new location today and the sheep are still hanging out so no construction started yet. I really hate the location they are building but there are some cool concept drawings displayed that get me excited to take the kids next year.

From everything I have read, this is where it is going:

So it is west of the freeway between a medical supply company & a subdivision and across the street from the Ebay office park with no transit option and no restaurant/potential development around.

I bet the land was a bit cheaper.

What a horrible location. They really should have gone in the area between the intermodal hub and Rio Grande Station.

I can't believe these words are about to come out of my mouth, but, if it wasn't going to end up downtown, I would rather have it be ..... ok give me a second to let myself type this..... near Sandy City Hall. That hurt a little.

It would give that area a bit more vibrancy, an "attraction" and would be easily assesible by FrontRunner and Trax.

Seriously that is an absolutely HORRIBLE location. Not to mention, it's a pretty cheaply built housing development too. Again if it wasn't going to be downtown, which makes the most sense, Sandy should have done everything in it's power to keep it in the city and to convince them to build it near City Hall. The Procrapium didn't materialize with a theater, I think this would have been a stellar replacement.

I did a bit more looking and I think it is across the street in the following field. Still same area and not good at all.

Agree 100%. The Draper site sucks. And its a waste. I really wish it would of gone in sandy cross the street from city hall just as you said or somewhere near Rio Tinto stadium.

An outsider comment related to the current topic in the transit thread and current conversation on this thread:

I am very impressed with the huge amount of money Utah has put together to build a rail network of commuter, light, and soon a streetcar. However and JMHO, Utah better figure out TOD's soon, or the weight behind the arguments against the millions of dollars will grow. The big box stores built on 1300 S. (I think). Rio Tinto built basically into a culde-a-sac. Aquarium BFE. A million square feet of office being constructed in the open fields. In my Trax travels I have seen a handful of wood frame three story apartment buildings a short distance from some stations. Okay, for a brand new system, but certain sections have been live for a number of years now.

PS. Before you mention CCC. I believe it would have been built with or without the Trax station. It would have been designed differently, but it would have been built.

Hmmmm... that's about 3 blocks from the Draper Frontrunner stop. Maybe they and eBay, other businesses, could start a shuttle bus from the train and/or UTA will run something up that street.

Isn't the Draper station around 13200 South? That's what the UTA's social media rep stated. Then again, the rep might have mixed up the 3 and 2.

I also found out that the Draper station will open in December. Interesting. Up until now Draper was slated to open at a later date, as with Vineyard.

132nd S was the controversial archealogical site so UTA choose between three other sites and finally picked 128th S.

I think you are right and it is on this property on the east side of the road. I agree, this is an awful location . When I heard this was going in Draper I was hoping that is was at least going to be off the 11400s. exit on the property just south of the Scheels that is under construction, which would be easier access and this nice building would have been visible from I-15. If not there then where the empty Lowes is off of 9000s.

Yah, they ought to just convert the empty Lowes into the aquarium. That's a great idea.
