Staples on Wildrose infrastructure plan.
Quote:
Staples: Wildrose plan to axe transit funding a disaster for cities

By David Staples, edmontonjournal.com
...the Wildrose position on mass transit is strangely out of touch with city voters, as well as unfair to them. If it were implemented, it would be a major blow to Calgary and Edmonton.
...
GreenTrip is now building transit lines in Calgary and Edmonton, with $497 million going into the new NAIT LRT line.
...
Premier Alison Redford has gone on the record repeatedly to voice her support for GreenTrip funding. Indeed, in her commitment to mass transit, Redford comes across as strong and as fierce as Smith does on any of her own staunch policy stances.

But Smith on transit? Way too old school.
...
“It would be a monstrous inequity between urban and rural,” says Edmonton Coun. Don Iveson, head of the Capital Region Board’s transportation committee. “The province would no doubt continue to build highways in rural areas, but the LRT is the equivalent of a highway to Edmontonians and Calgarians as far as how many are able to get to work and get to school and get to markets on it.”
...
Perhaps the Wildrose has calculated that it can win Alberta by isolating the Edmonton region and taking Calgary and rural Alberta, the old Klein coalition. But I can’t see how taking an axe to C-Train funding is going be a winner in Calgary. Voters there recently elected an avid pro-transit mayor in Naheed Nenshi.

Love the route number, can't mistake that one.... although, and as mentioned on C2E, perhaps 737 would have been more apropos.

Wish it was more like every half an hour the whole time from 5 am to midnight, but I'm not really complaining - at least it's all day both ways, unlike the C-Line.

In 2009, City Council endorsed an updated Bicycle Transportation Plan. This plan called for the addition of on-street cycling routes to better serve and encourage cycling as part of how people in the city get around. For 2012, we are adding seven new routes, totaling 15 km, to encourage more cycling. This installation may impact road configuration and, in some locations, on-street parking.

Residents are invited to participate in upcoming information sessions, where they can review the routes in detail and provide feedback to City staff. An additional information session will be held in May 2012, prior to installation, to update on any modifications to the plans and provide another opportunity for residents to learn more about the changes.

Detailed information on the bike routes is available online at www.edmonton.ca/cycling.

The City of Edmonton is undertaking an initiative to develop Complete Streets Guidelines as a key piece to implementing the Transportation Master Plan, The Way We Move.

You are invited to participate in the project. We are currently working with city staff and stakeholders to develop principles that will be used to create the Complete Streets Guidelines and we want your input as well. Please go to [ www.edmonton.ca/completestreets ]www.edmonton.ca/completestreets and click on "Tell us what Complete Streets means to you" at the right hand side of the page. Your input and commentary will help us to identify key considerations and factors that should be considered when planning and designing roads.

Creating the Complete Streets Guidelines will provide the necessary design guidance for new and rehabilitation roadway projects that allows for the accommodation of the needs of all users within the road right-of-way – pedestrians, bicycles, transit and transit riders, goods and services vehicles, and automobiles. The Complete Streets project has a significant reach into the work and operations of the City, the development industry, residents, and businesses by:
Changing the way streets are planned and designed, and their ultimate construction
Possibly impacting City operations such as maintenance, snow removal, emergency response, and waste collection

The role of Complete Streets is to acknowledge that the design of streets should reflect the context of the area, land uses, and types of users for which the street provides access while also considering the most convenient forms of travel for different types of trips: walking and cycling for local trips, public transit for travel on congested corridors and to higher density/activity generating uses, and automobile travel to access dispersed land uses or for transporting goods. The creation of Complete Streets Guidelines aims to emphasize the accessibility of destinations via walking, cycling, transit and driving, which differs from the traditional mobility-based approach to the planning and design of the transportation system. Not limited to denser urban neighbourhoods, Complete Street principles are appropriate for new and existing rural, suburban, mature, and industrial areas, including the adequate provision of features to accommodate trucks and buses.

We hope you will participate in this project and spread the information and website link to your friends, family and colleagues.

In Winnipeg, we have an express route from a suburb to downtown, and when its mid-day, nights and weekends, its from the suburb to a transit centre (MalcolmTucker, knowing my city, would see 24 and 79 like this!). Why cant the 747 operate mid-day, nights and weekends, and let the 590 take over during rush hour? Saves a few buses and $$$, plus all ETS would have to do is make the route EIA-Leduc-Nisku-EIA-Century Park to make it viable. What - another like, 5-10 minutes added?

I probably would not take it if it meant going into nisku or leduc prior to or post EIA. Milk runs can be saved for the airlines.

I took it after literally sprinting from WEM to Downtown to Century Park. It wasn't a bad ride
