Don't forget the addition of the ubiquitous stacked stone on the main level exterior.

Regina’s rental market has been one of the tightest in the country for a few years, now one local company is working on a different solution and from a distance it looks like a giant block set.

Prefabricated buildings are taking off in Regina, transforming holes into homes in record time.

Construction on one of these four story apartment buildings started in Harbour Landing on Monday and in eight days it will look nearly complete from the outside.

Denis Jones is with Deveraux Developments, a local company putting together their eighth pre-built apartment building in just over a year.

“Although it appears to be just like Lego being put together it’s obviously a lot more complex and requires a lot of experience to do it,” Jones explained.

The trailer-sized units are built in Idaho and shipped to Regina by truck before they are stacked together using a crane.

By adding nearly 400 new rental units to the market, Jones thinks the company has probably increased the vacancy rate in the city by nearly two per cent.

“I’m not sure we want to be known as the people who are changing the vacancy rate, but we’re doing our part for the city,” Jones said.

It takes eight months in total from the start of construction to have the units ready for renters to move in, which is almost a year faster than traditiona building methods.

In other words, this building has an anything-but-exciting exterior. Great to see it come together, none the less, not to mention refurbishing an existing building.

I've always wondered what the view from City Hall is like. Cool, thanks.

That's what anyone in Toronto will say to any city ranked above them...

Estevan's high ranking is in part because it's number one for jobs. Toronto gets pulled down by the affordability factor. Likewise, Vancouver.

Of course - and I partly agree with that sentiment as Toronto is a great city.

I don't pay much attention to these lists because it looks at things in a very isolated manner - so Estevan has jobs, relatively affordable housing, and likely a high average income. In what way do those factors come together is most opinion in my mind. How liveable is the city? Obviously Toronto is one the premier urban environments we have in this country with a lot to offer.

Regina needs some publicity like this. It has a shortage of workers -- much more so than Saskatoon, which currently has a higher unemployment rate. Regina has to shout a little louder above the din to reach potential newcomers who think of Saskatoon first when they think of a move because Regina hasn't even occurred to them. Whether you think it's valid or not, it's hard data that can be pointed to -- especially when Regina has a disadvantage most cities don't have, a snide northern neighbour.

I think that's the best description of Saskatoon I've ever heard.

I must say that when driving south on Broad St. in the downtown area and seeing that construction crane for the Centre Square condos, it is a beautiful sight indeed!! I guess it looks like there will not be a crane at the Albert St. & 11th Ave. construction site. But there should be one going up at Gardens on Rose in the not too distant future. Let the good times roll!! Number 5 in Canada, it's our time to shine opps sorry Saskatoon!!

Enough of the Saskatoon digs. It's nice to be the one with the exciting projects, but let's enjoy our success with a bit of class.

100% AGREED! I wasn't expecting to have an awesome view of that crane until I came up after going under the tracks and bam! that crane slaps you in the face in a super exciting way. Really exciting times in downtown Regina!
