I see they have the Plaza drainage cased pretty good too.
Perhaps that is why it won't be open to traffic...winter it is a skating rink and summer it is intended as a reflecting pond/pool??

I see they have moved a construction trailer on to the Gardens on Rose site, plus they have placed some large concrete barriers on the site. Looks like things are finally going to start moving ahead!! Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

I realize I'm a bit late to the plaza discussion, but I do agree that the city should have built the plaza on the east side of Victoria Park, where there was already a natural place for people to congregate due to the proximity of O'Hanlon's, Michi Sushi and Copper Kettle. I doubt anyone would have really cared if that portion of Scarth Street had been permanently closed, so long as 11th Avenue was left untouched (especially for buses).

Since the plaza is already constructed and there's no changing it without throwing yet more money at it, I think it ought to be reopened to traffic as it was originally designed to be.

Would re-opening the street to vehicle and/or bus traffic help decrease the incidence of vandalism, due to more (drivers/passengers') eyes potentially able to spot and thus possibly deter such things? How much vehicular traffic did 12th Ave. see during the evening to the start of the next business day before the plaza was constructed, and if a similar or even a decreased level of traffic could be sustained during that period now (unfortunately buses don't run all night), would that be enough to deter/decrease vandalism in the plaza and area?

Hard to say, the park at night was bad before the Plaza, too. Through connections at Transit, I can confirm that the bus routes will stay as they are now. (at least as far as staying off the Plaza is concerned) They are 10 tons empty, and the number of them on there every day would ruin the Plaza in no time. That was decided back when they originally planned to open it to traffic.

I absolutely agree with this. There shouldn't be any heavy traffic that could degenerate the Plaza space. The plaza cost far to much in the first place, and as such should have no through traffic anytime. The only vehicles able to drive in this space should be limited to special events traffic. We can evolve as a city regarding downtown traffic. I have concluded that opening more downtown streets to two-way traffic could improve the overall situation. We also need to see some of the parking lanes opened to traffic more frequently, as well as dedicated turn signals, especially on 11th avenue...

The Plaza surface is way stronger than most streets. It is has a reinforced concrete base.

Today they are hauling away the rotten ice from the skating rink. I think that rink was a failure despite the awesome weather. Little used and very univiting. The need benches, outdoor heaters and a loop rather than small rectangle of ice.

Cantebury Gardens

I noticed that they have dug a new pit behind the building that is going up on Broad Street. That building was originally designed in an L shape but they've just been building the bottom part of the 'L'. Looks like their going to start building the top part of it now.

I also noticed a large peice of equipement on a big trailer sitting on Broad right by the Center Square site, thought it might be the top part of the crane, maybe they are getting ready to install that this weekend.

I think that even though the plaza is reinforced with concrete underneath, the paving stones will still deteriorate really fast if traffic is allowed, what's the point of building a plaza if you're going to have vehicles on it. The point of this plaza is to make the downtown more attractive and I like how it's peaceful and quiet, just a nice place to relax without the noise of traffic.

The paving stones were speced to be driven on.

I have been reading these posts for some time now, and I have to agree that the plaza was built in the wrong spot. The east side of the park would have been ideal. I question why city council agreed with this location and let this project happen. Soo much money has been spent on this, and studies and traffic changes....... where is the benefit?

We now have a fantastic plaza.

Agreed, but in the wrong spot. The foresight from city council was not there. The plaza has not made downtown more vibrant.....so far.

Does anyone have any renderings on what the end result should look like?

Think of Broad Street Crossing and imagine that it's across the street. That.

It's essentially the same finishings. Likely the only improvement is that the glass at grade won't be tinted - which I will agree does make this version substantially better. Don't even get me started on reflective glass.
