W doesn't strike me as the type of flag that will only be found in the absolute top-shelf, tier-one global cities and luxury travel destinations of the world. (For that type of exclusivity, look at W's sister brand, St. Regis.) If you look at W's list of locations it's hard to imagine that Calgary wouldn't fit in, especially considering the generally high room rates in that city:

While I wouldn't expect a W to open up in Sudbury, I don't think it's out of the question for Calgary and a handful of other large Canadian cities. In other words, if there is no W in Calgary I don't think it's because Starwood doesn't want there to be one... it probably has more to do with the lack of a developer willing to take on such a project.

Calgary has high room rates, but it also has very high operating costs mostly due to labor rates. Higher end hotels require more employees per guest, which seriously compromises the business case. Most customer facing types of businesses in Calgary go to extreme lengths to engineer out labor.

Is there a chance that that's more of a statement about the developer than the market itself?

I admittedly don't know anything about the specific instance you're referring to, but it's hard to imagine that an established, legitimate, well-financed hotelier would be shot down by Starwood solely on the basis that they wanted to locate the hotel in Calgary as opposed to, say, London or Los Angeles.

Looking at that list, the only cities that I might include in the same class of global importance, size, or chicness are Scottsdale, Arizona; Austin, Texas; and New Orleans, LA. However, all three of those cities likely have a bigger tourism industry than Calgary.

King Charlotte notice about sales centre. The King Charlotte located on Charlotte Street just north of King Street West (32 floors 114.5m).


The Bond site location on Adelaide Street West between Widmer Street and John Street. Should be starting site prep shortly (41 floors 134m).


The Studio on Richmond located at Richmond Street West between Duncan Street and Simcoe Street, site prep has started (2 buildings: Tower 1 41 floors 131.2m, Tower 2 31 floors 96.9m).
