Lets see.... Urbia 50 storey..... bait and flip (although they didn't quite follow through)
Edmontonian.... 65 stories

10 years ago, that land was worth about as much as a bag of pucks. 20 years ago, it was literally on the wrong side of the tracks. Now it is in a interesting spot - across the street from downtown, kitty corner from where the new arena will be. Having a DC2 zoning that allows up to 65 floors (BTW - 200m will accommodate a 65 storey apartment - incedently the discretionary height requirement in the CCA) will significantly boost the value of that land.
65 storey hotel would be cool

Cost. I believe there are no pumps used in the current configuration. The water pressure through the nozzles is just the pressure coming from the main. There was no need to install the infrastructure from the river to the bridge (pumps, piping, electrical, and structural (to house the pumps)). At the time, potable water was the way to go.

65 stories for apartment is about 600' to around 670' give or take + - a few feet. I'd love to see it, then a Calgary developer might want to build a residential building 70 floors!! Let the battle begin!

anything over 35 stories in this city would be a miracle.....refreshing, but a miracle. i am aware of height restrictions due to the airport still running, also of supply and demand, but this city has a severe case of height phobia.

Not really. Tell me what recent highrise development was rejected from Council because of height.

You want height phobia, you'd be surprised what many residents in Toronto object to.

what recent highrise was approved that wasn't as high as we already basically have? let me ask you then....when do you think we'll actually get something taller than what we already have? what would it take to get it?

What's with this preoccupation with height? Is it a penis envy thing or something?

Personally I would rather have two 30-story towers or three 20-story towers filling up empty downtown lots than one 60-story tower.

My friend...not to sound pessimistic but before you jump on a rumour do some simple analysis.

Based on the types of hotel you are talking about it is only reasonable to assume that downtown Edmonton is the destination (i.e. Le Germain and W don't just pop up in Leduc or Ellerslie for all the rig workers to stay at). Based on that I ask the following questions:

1. Is the high end hotel market in downtown currently saturated?

2. If not, what kind of growth are you expecting in order to justify a business case? If you are referring to the Arena development then that's fine, but is that alone enough to justify both said hotels? Also would this development (in the short term so please assume just the Arena gets built in this staged build out) create substantial new market for high end hoteliers? Or would it simply displace the existing hotel stays by sports teams, media, music teams, etc. from one location to the next?

3. Outside of the Arena project, do you see any real movement in other potential consumer markets which would justify the presence of said hotels? When I say this I a mostly referring to the corporate base since that is the most prominent market for mid-high ranking hotel brands.

Based on my wishes alone I'd love to see this go ahead! But that means nothing in the long run. Projects that we know are not going to go ahead like Manu2 and the Edmontonian are a reminder to us that at the end of the day the cold, hard facts are all that matter. There's a reason why the only rumor for Jasper and 96th street was a Hilton Garden Inn...Because that's actually plausible.

So I believe I found where Cold is getting this source from. A guy on C2E of all places has posted a thread about the W and Le German (I think his spelling is off). He says that the W will be in the Arena district...

Now I pulled his post history and this also came up:

"I heard today the food court in City Centre East (the big one) is going to be removed and this is to facilitate a connection with the lrt to the new arena development. There will be a new food court built in the new arena development. It makes perfect sense as several vacancies in the bottom floor area have not been filled." -CitySlicker on C2E

Yehhh...so I don't know how much I buy this guy's story

We know John day is working on a hotel plan for the KR and we know the Katz group is planning a hotel on the arena district lands. Both a W and a le Germain would be appropriate in each case. Yes take it with a grain of salt, but both are very appropriate brands.

I wondered around the Alberta Hotel on Saturday morning and must say I'm very impressed with it. The plain brick addition fronting Jasper looks a little weak, but the brick addition on the rear and the curtain glass looks very hot.

W is typically a small boutique hotel, downtown, trendy and caters to the younger demographic. I could maybe see W being a good fit on RHW, but you find W's in NY, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta.... The only Canadian city is Montreal. There are not too many and the Cities that have them are places that are significant urban tourist destinations (or spa's). But if it is in the works, great.
