If that were the case you wouldn't even need the Moncton in there.

Stade Molson Stadium.

Here's a thought...

Officially call it "Stade UdeM Stadium."

However, French speaking people can refer to it as "Stade UdeM" and English-speakers can call it "UdeM Stadium"

I don't understand why both need to be said. If you're giving someone directions, you don't tell them to go to "Rue Main Street", you just say "Main Street."

Don't get me started on the Saint John and St-Jean thing either...

Well from my understanding from rumours and rumblings at various water coolers.. the UniversitÉ is trying to change their name so they are no longer named after the guy who Expulsed(sp?) the Acadians.. so i think the "Moncton" name might be temporary on a Université stadium. Just sayin..

although this could be completely un-founded and more than likely just some ramblings based on personal opinion.

The poll regarding the future of Moncton on SSP is currently as follows:

1 - full SSP Local (like Halifax)
13 - subforum (like Edmonton)
0 - new Moncton #2 thread
3 - uncertain or on the fence

So, we have 17 members so far who have expressed an opinion. I think it's important to have as many votes cast as possible as this helps to show the interest in this endeavour within our community.

I plan to continue tabulation until next Tuesday and then submit the results to the site administrators with a recommendation. Please continue your input everyone.

Thanks

That talk has been going on forever. Especially at the Shippagan and Edmundston campuses, to no avail.

But we're all equal man! We all have to be represented!

Don't get me started on something like Aréna Gorman Arena.

That's because in french it's grammatically correct to place "Stade" in front of the name, just as it sounds better to place "Stadium" at the end in english.

Exactly, the hybrid name may sound strange and awkward, however, nobody actually says it like that while talking. I would just use one or the other depending on the language I happen to be speaking at the time. Same goes for Saint-John vs. St-Jean.

St. Louis Wings

I heard through the grapevine that executives from St. Louis Wings were in town to look at sites for a possible future location in Moncton. http://www.stlouiswings.com/

From what I understand the former Golden Eagle location at 1590 Mountain Road is being considered. I had no idea Golden Eagle had even closed. I checked out the restaurant's site and from what I can see it would be a great addition to Moncton North. I would welcome a new pub/bar & grill/wing location in this end of the city. Look at how successful Moosers is in Dieppe. We need something like that up here. If you're looking for a night out for drinks and wings, or to catch a game, the closest place really is Boston Pizza or the Casino, and the service at the Casino does not sit well with me. The former Golden Eagle location has plenty of parking and is in a high traffic area.

Has anyone else heard anything about this? I look forward to finding out if this is true, and if so, how quickly it will happen.

Nope, I haven't heard anything porchmouse, but that doesn't mean anything, and in my experience you have a fairly sharply tuned ear when it comes to rumours in the retail or restaurant sector. I hope your right.

If true, this would be their first franchise outside Ontario. Their menu is pretty basic pub fare but sounds intriguing (and tasty).

---------------------------------------------------------

And on another note, Statistics Canada has released their 2011 CMA population estimates http://www40.statcan.ca/l01/cst01/demo05a-eng.htm. This differs from the actual CMA population counts and may be more accurate due to population undercounts because of people not submitting their census forms. The population estimate for Moncton is 140,500.

So, as far as StatsCan is concerned, Moncton has already broken the 140k barrier, and given the fact that this estimate is for July 1st 2011, our current actual population may be as high as 142,000!

Also, if true, we have now passed Brantford and are now the country's 28th largest CMA and are nipping at Guelph's heels!

Current (2011) StatsCan Population Estimates for Atlantic Canadian CMA's

Halifax - 408,200
St. John's - 196,200
Moncton - 140,500
Saint John - 128,600

Halifax breaks through the 400,000 barrier and finally surpasses St-Catharines-Niagara. Moncton through 140,000 and surpasses, once again, Brantford. St-John's could hit 200,000 within the next couple of years and maybe even surpass Sherbrooke by the next census. All in all, great showing for Atlantic CMAs.

Ahead of Moncton now are Saguenay and Trois-Rivieres which have slow growing or stagnant populations. If current trends continue, all 3 CMAs will be very close population-wise by the next census. Guelph is closest to Moncton but is also growing pretty quickly. The next census might turn out to be an exciting 4-way race for spot #25 hovering around the 150 mark!

I'm not in the Moncton forum all the time but if I can I vote the subforum like Edmonton.

Not trying to be offensive or anything, but is there enough activity going on in Moncton right now to justify a hole sub section for it? All that's really happening right now is retail updates, the occasional rumour about a new arena and some suburban/very small apartment developments. That's why I spend so little time here, there just isn't a hole lot going on besides a growing population and retail sector. From what I can see the same can be said about St.John's.

Regardless of whether there's 'enough going on', we're well beyond 10 thousand posts and the forum is getting a bit unwieldy. Something has to change. Beyond that, it really doesn't make a difference technically speaking. A big thread, an SSP Local or whatever else is just 0s and 1s to the server running the site. The overwhelming consensus from the frequent posters to the thread want it changed to something more manageable.

You're right that the stuff that gets posted here tends to lean toward the retail side of things, but that gives a skewed view of what's actually happening on the ground. No, the city doesn't have any skyscrapers going up, but the city is currently in an unprecedented residential boom that's finally starting to build up rather than out. There has been some significant industrial development that is going to increase considerably in the next year or two. Non-retail commercial and residential infill is pouring into downtown. There is a pretty long list of imminent, good chance of, and could happen projects downtown and all over the city.

I'd actually argue the reason why we need something different is right there in your post. The only concern I have is whether it would create an extra barrier to newcomers. The local threads on SSP can be pretty unwelcoming to outsiders. My fear is that if we split things off somehow whether that will just build that wall a little higher. But time will tell, for sure.

I believe you're thinking of "Happy Wok", not "Golden Eagle"...

I could be wrong, but I believe the place you're thinking of is "Happy Wok", which is directly next door to Golden Eagle (as far as I'm aware, Golden Eagle is still very much in business). Happy Wok went out of business several months ago which is a total pain since they were Moncton's ONLY traditional Dim-Sum resto. I'm guessing their reason for folding-up was due to lack of advertising.

Allow me to rant about that for a little bit... I've been living in Moncton for over a decade and had absolutely no clue the place even served Dim-Sum until I noticed a small cardboard sign saying "Dim-Sum" in the front window. It was so small that unless you'd be staring at the window as you drive by, you'd miss it. I also think Golden Eagle stole a lot of their business since their building looked more "modern" than Happy Wok. Once I tried it, I was blown away, best tasting Chinese food in Moncton at the time in my opinion. I had just started liking the place when pruuuut... out of nowhere, they go out of business.

Now the closest Dim-Sum resto to us is over 3 hours away in Halifax (forget the name... Great Wall Restaurant??). Sure, we've got Zen Garden out by Moncton High which has their own tiny 5 or 6 menu item "version" of Dim-Sum, but it just doesn't compare. If anyone here knows of any other Dim-Sum restos in Moncton, Dieppe or Riverview, PLEASE POST INFO as I've been craving this Chinese delicacy ever since Happy Wok kicked the proverbial bucket.

Trust me, if Monctonians would have known this place served Dim-Sum, it would NOT have gone belly-up! (If you're still wondering wtf Dim-Sum is, then consult Wikipedia). The quality was on-par with anything you'd get in Boston's Chinatown District, but they only served it from traditional week-end hours of 1:00pm to 3:00pm on Saturdays & Sundays & as I said, rarely advertised about it except for the tiny window sign. The only people that would should up would be the regulars who had found out about it. It's a shame really.[END RANT]

As for your question about "St. Louis Wings", I've never heard of them, but I'm wondering how long it would last before going out of business. We used to have a Montreal-based company here in town a few years ago that had a similar concept, except it was a place that served Subs and Wings where you could get both a sub and a 6-pack of wings as a combo item or get them individually. They also had other stuff like burgers, hot dogs, etc. If memory serves me correctly, they were called "Buffalo Bills Wings" or "Wild Bill's Wings" or something of the sort and had a location on Champlain St. where Little Ceasar's Pizza is currently located (Near BMO Bank) and later opened up a 2nd location out on corner of Morton/Elmwood (near Tim Horton's/Pizza Delight). They didn't last more than a year before both locations shut down, so again, not sure how well St. Louis Wings would do or if they'd suffer the same fate.

Regardless, this would be a completely NEW resto brand/chain and I'm 1000% all for that! I say bring it on & lets see how well they do while they're in town.

Now if only we could get a Baton Rouge in Moncton, I wouldn't seethe in anger everytime I drive past the Main St. Imvescor HQ and see the logo on the side of the building (I suppose the same could be said about Scores, for that matter). Ridiculous to have the HQ in Moncton, but not the resto itself!

I just think it would make more sense for another thread to be created, because a sub section would probably be left empty for quite a while with only a few key threads getting any real attention. I would say however once all those projects get started and the thread can not sustain all the activity it would make sense to open up a sub forum.

This is all my personal opinion, take is as such

@jstaleness - I think anyone can vote on this issue.
@cormiermax - I don't take offense at your comments and I appreciate where you are coming from, but I think a subforum would help to keep discussions regarding Moncton development issues better organized and there is enough traffic on the Moncton thread that I think something new needs to be tried. I like the subforum idea better than an SSP Local because it is less cumbersome and Moncton doesn't need the elaborate structure of a full fledged Local.

The updated totals are:
1 - full SSP Local (like Halifax)
14 - subforum (like Edmonton)
1 - new Moncton #2 thread
4 - on the fence

So the poll has been open for about a week now. Is this the final tally? Or is there an official deadline before a formal request is made?
