I don't get all the commotion. They're the Wal-Mart of Italian food. Literally. They open up in a market and drive all the true, local restaurants out of business. Then you're left with bland, uninspired quasi-Italian food.
Pasta Prima is already doing that.

Southland Mall really needs to get that Walmart lease filled. With the bank going free-standing (better move bc they have no space in their current mall location), that's one more hit to that mall. Retailers have to be frustrated that after being promised a new anchor was coming, the space has sat empty for how long.

Parking rates are increasing at the hospitals. They need to quit giving lip service to the idea of a parkade and build one already.

CITY PLAZA
Here's a link to a post on Dog Blog about some of the possible uses for the plaza that have been proposed by city officials: http://www.prairiedogmag.com/?p=38748

Depends on your definition of a block then.

City proposes to block off one street to traffic, everyone loses their mind. There are hundreds of city streets where you can drive your car - I don't see the loss of one street as a big deal.

We are trying to make the downtown more pedestrian friendly after all - these are the steps you take . Seems to be working for New York City - but why follow them when we can be like LA!

I think one of the objections I've heard to keeping it traffic-free is that the city spent a considerable sum to make the plaza strong enough to handle traffic on it. If it was never going to be driven on, was all that extra expenditure on the base necessary.

True and that I can agree with. I think it would look and feel entirely different had it be designed for pedestrians only, so I can absolutely agree that was a lost opportunity.

That being said, I don't agree with the the argument that it's a street and thus should be available to automobiles.

The tower crane at the RCMP's 2nd new dormitory is coming down. All that remains this morning is the tower. I am wondering if this crane will be relocated to the Centre Square project, seeing that all they have erected so far is just the base and part of the tower? Or will the 3rd dormitory begin construction soon, if at all?

I agree with your comments. The plan is to make your downtown more pedestrian friendly and I think this is why they are contemplating leaving it closed to traffic. It was built for vehicles as well and there will be vehicles driving on it when certain events require it.The folks complaining are ones that are probably being inconvenienced because they can't pick someone up from work right at the front door on those 2 blocks. There are no stores or shops there to stop and shop for so I don't see the fuss.

Seeing that it was built for vehicles as well though, why not try opening it to vehicles for one full year and see how it goes? Would it be too costly or too much of a logistical nightmare to revert back if need be? That might appease the almighty vehiclists but probably not.

There may not be shops and restaurants now but such a decision will make it far less likely. Plus there are numerous businesses with clients and deliveries in the buildings that may have their access expropriated. This is more than an inconvenience for these businesses. Some of them my just head to the suburbs. I am one of them. The plaza is extremely pedestrian friendly as it was originally designed.

RCMP is PCL. Graham is the other.

You're saying that by not allowing vehicles it will be less likely that shops and restaurants will set up shop there? Interesting.

I never thought of the business deliveries that would be affected, just figured that gets done through back alley access. I see your concern. That's why I thought a trial basis of vehicles when there are no events and no vehicles when there are events to see if everything jives like the original plan. It would be nice if this worked for everybody. I look forward to checking the plaza out on my next visit.

'Iconic' restaurant chain eyes Sask. expansion
Leader-Post March 10, 2012

The Vancouver-based White Spot restaurant chain is heading into Saskatchewan.

CEO Warren Erhart said this week that White Spot hopes to have meetings soon with potential franchisors about bringing to the province White Spot and possibly its premium hamburger spinoff, Triple O's.

He'd like to see restaurants in both Regina and Saskatoon so as not to have "one orphan" alone in the province.

White Spot started in Vancouver in 1928; the Vancouver Sun last month called the chain "iconic."

It has 63 restaurants in B.C. and four more in Alberta, with a fifth opening next week. "We see the prairies as sort of the area where we'll expand in the next 24 months," Erhart said.

He described White Spot as a family, casual, fullservice sit-down restaurant that, somewhat unusually for the Canadian restaurant industry, focuses on breakfast, lunch and supper as opposed to, say, only breakfast or dinner. Triple O's is a burger and fries chain with 59 locations in B.C. and seven more in Asia.

"My boss said, 'Go east!' and I went to the far east," he said, adding, "as we looked at Saskatchewan, we looked at what's happening in restaurant meals, and Saskatchewan was one of the strong parts of Canada - the prairies overall, but especially Saskatchewan. I think it (per-capita restaurant spending) is up 5.2 per cent there."

I'd expect a good chunk of the new rentals are in Harbour Landing. It's nice to see some rentals that are not under the Boardwalk monopoly.
